How to play legato? How to voice? How to make the notes sing? This Impromptu is the perfect piece to learn about these fundamentals in piano playing. The first half of this tutorial is dedicated to answer these questions. In the second half, I discussed the modulations and their emotional implications in the piece. I also pointed out some musical elements that are worth our special attentions.

Dr. Tingting, thank you so much for this video. I studied piano as a child for 15 years before giving it up as an adult. Now in my 40's, I'm getting back to playing and working on this Schubert Impromptu and your tutorial has been so helpful in making me think about how I want to phrase and interpret this piece. It's a wonderful video and your playing is also incredible.

Great tutorial! Thank you so much! Love and struggle with this piece. 😊 I think it is quite important to hold the melody line with pinky (as long as it doesn't disturb the eveness and softness of the accompaniment of course) in order to provide good melody legato. Agree? This is probably one of the hardest things to master in this piece. It will never be good enough. Can always be improved. A life long project! 😅

I always think the perfect legato is a combination of two things: one is to physically hold the finger, the other is to sing in your heart. Singing (even if silently) helps you carry the sound through.

This is great stuff! Thank you! I had a doubt , where all you can use the volume pedal here? Is it up to the performer to decide ? I feel pianists like Kempff and Horowitz always use the volume pedal in this piece, do u think so?

Thanks for your tutorial! I have a question about the trills. 4 example in measure 19, do u trill from the written trill note to the note above it or bellow it?
@tingtingzhang
@tingtingzhang Жыл бұрын
The trill goes between the main note D flat and the note above it E flat.

thank you for a great tutorial....i have a question please.....how do you decide the notes in the trills are these written out or freehand....this is the bit that i struggle with the most especially managing the turn at the end of the trills....the shorter ones seems harder to me for some reason ....any tips??
@tingtingzhang
@tingtingzhang 4 ай бұрын
If it's a regular trill, we usually start on the main note and go up one step (sometimes half step depending on composer's writing) and alternate between the two.

How have I use the right pedal in this piece? Could you help me? Amazing work!
@tingtingzhang
@tingtingzhang 2 жыл бұрын
Very good question! For this piece, the pedal pretty much goes with the harmonies. Whenever the harmony changes, you want to change the pedal. For example, at the very beginning you can generously use one pedal per measure. Then measures 3&4, you would have to change by the chords in left hand. This is a general rule. In the middle section where the harmony changes more often, your pedal will need to follow that. For instance, in measure 27, you will need to change the pedal on every half note. Another tip is to listen attentively, let your ears guide your foot.😊 You will notice if you had too much or too little pedal. Hope this gives you some idea.
