I was looking for a straight-forward solution of backing up my complete Synology NAS to a TrueNAS instance. This tutorial is awsome and just what I was looking for. Thank you!

Thank you a lot for the video. Till now I was taking Synology backup to a Deltasync(Rsync) application to a desktop drive and the problem was whenever I had to restore the backup it will be very very slow. After watching the video I did some tests. I configured a Truenas VM on desktop and configured S3 and took some backups and tried to restore the same file from S3 backup and Rsync backup which I had taken earlier and the files transfer rate using Rsync was 50 Mbps over the LAN and while in S3 was 500 Mbps. The file restore initiation on Rsync itself took around 2 min. Hope this information helps many people to build True NAS S3 backup rather than going with DeltaSync.

Thank you. I watched this video and since I have a QNAP system, I gave the setup a try and found that you can do this with a QNAP server. I successfully set up a one-way sync (copy) to a bucket on my ProxMox virtual Truenas Scale setup. It does not appear to be nearly as fast (only running about 9 - 38MB/s) as some other methods on the same VM setup, but it does work.

Any one who is looking at this in Feb 22... appears the recent TrueNAS update breaks creating an S3 bucket. I followed this video when it was released and it worked perfectly... I updated to latest release and it does not work anymore (my Synology doesnt seem to be able to find the endpoint... also if you enable the freenas_default cert for https a new field pops up... but there is no help link on how to fill it out (its mandatory). To be clear this is not an issue with Tom's guide... it just appears to be a recently introduced bug. It looks like someone might have opened a JIRA issue on this already. Wanted to post here incase anyone else is running into the trouble... You have NOT lost your mind :-)

Only difference was the TLS Server URI field was added and that the browser didnt work (due to fake certificate). I added my IP-address to the URI field (it should be called TLS hostname instead) and then i could save.

@@newvideos54321 which ip did you added? the Truenas Scale/Core IP address? or the Synology one?

I can't really speak to the BSD version, but I know Minio has the ability to create users that you can then scope into having access to only one bucket
@zenmaster243 жыл бұрын
4:26 if you want multiple s3 compatible buckets with their own access keys, does that mean you need to have have multiple instances of minio running?
@timezonewall3 жыл бұрын
If running through the FreeNAS interface I believe that is the case. Accessing it through linux/bsd/windows cli, I believe it is possible to setup multiple users with different keys according to the documentation through the local client, mc, which has to be installed separately. I use MinIO on Windows as a synology target, but only need a single access key so I have not tested this.

Hi @Tom, since everything in truenas is becoming deprecated, could you do an update video of how to backup synology to truenas?
@looper6120 Жыл бұрын
you can still manually install minio if prefer S3 than rsync, There is even webDav option if you like.

Helpful to know something like this is possible if I ever move my syno backup box offsite. Currently I rsync them on site as if one goes down I need immediate access to the backup. The sheer volume of data I have stored takes forever to move on my old ds1813+.

This video is no longer functional as if you enable the certificate it asks for a TLS Server Hostname which I have no idea what to enter there. Can't achieve connection to Minio and I followed everything exept not doing a certificate. Love your content. Please update this video or just comment about the certificate. Thanks

I just put localhost in that field. Seems to be the only thing that works. I can now access it from local network (in minio) and from a remote location using google ddns on the s3browser. BUT I cannot get my Synology NAS to connect. It keeps saying "The time on your Diskstation and remote server do not match" I've configured the synology and Truenas to sync to the same NTP servers, to no avail. I think the issue is that the Truenas is using UTC and Synology is using GMT time zones. Edit: I FINALLY GOT IT WORKING. In my HP ProLiant I had to set the time to the current UTC time. And in Synology I had to use "Path-Style" in the s3 config page.

When I try to set up the S3, my TrueNAS IP doesn't show on top. Any ideas why?

Hi, thanks for the amazing tutorial. But I am haing issues, whenever I click on Bucket Name on Synology, it says "The time on your Synology NAS and remote server do not match". I have tried everything, the time matches. Any advise would be highly appreciated.

I was under the impression Synology uses BTFS and TrueNAS does not..... Would that not be an issue?

How about the other way around, truenas as source and synology nas as backup target ? Currently i am using a batch script on my desktop pc to sync folders from truenas shares to my synology nas with robocopy via my pc, because i haven't found a good and easy to setup solution yet. I am not happy with this.

As I said in the video, there is not really any great way to do that.
