The valley is the area of a roof structure where two roof surfaces meet, e.g. where there is an inside corner of an angled building, or where a gable roof dormer divides the roof surface. Both roof surfaces, that of the dormer and the main roof, meet in one or two diagonal lines.
Valley gutters are particularly used on metal roofs with low roof pitches of less than 10 degrees. The function of the valley gutter is to drain the rainwater safely into the eaves gutter without moisture penetrating the substructure. The valley gutter is not a substitute for a breather membrane or an underlay.
