Undugu ...sikuzaliwa pekee bali ..Nikufaana " Its about 9 minutes to midnyt kigali time , and i have been for a minute watching some FBI series 'thingy' on Netflix and then decided to make myself some tea. Its very quite in this being house that am in, a 7 bedroom villa , and am just currently hosting only 3 guest with me . And i just dont know where this thought came from . probably some disappointment or maybe discouragement after some daily battles we all have to endure and face every day , especially now that Covid completely came to cause havoc and its impact is still evident from how our businesses are still picking slow. And i remembered these lyric from a very Wise & talented Musician . and how true the word actually are. And i think i should tell you a story about this great musician and how those beautiful words he penned down means or meant a lot to me . We come from a musical family in Mombasa and most of my kins at the coast were either in a band or artist of sort. And even before i ever met some of them , we always found ourselves, My Siblings & I, very keen and in love with creative space, My father , Alfred Mugenda , a former Railway Captain had a stint with music as he narrated to us, how in the late 70s or so , him with his guitar along some famous streets of Nairobi, he "rocked" as a one man guitarist them days !!. He was fortunate to meet my mum , a young cute mijikenda girl from Rabai , who back then even before finishing her high school was busy doing business shipping and ferrying products from Mombasa and supplying to Nairobi all the way to Malaba , near the Ugandan border. She was a business lady long before we were even born , and a good composer & musician as well Many Many Many years later we were born, First came my big bro , Alex Mugenda or bigsoul as known by many in the entertainment & music industry. Then one year later i was downloaded to earth and i must say it feels nice to have been on born the same day with Madiba. My younger bro came a year and a half later , They call him Marc (the half member of LMK music group). Several years later , my Siz Christine Fayu (Bayu) was born , Anyone working with any live music band in Nairobi would know this beautiful soul, she can sing. After her , Stephen (Jaybeat formerly of LMK music group) was born and this constitutes our immediate family and as fate would have it, we all are either music producers, Musicians and artist or both for some of us. ( Short commercial break , call to action, check our music online & support) Back to my thoughts, so as i was making my tea (let me take the first sip) , back to the song... " Undugu" (the word has a lot of meaning , but it comes from the word ndugu , which means brother. so Undugu i suppose would mean what or how we shoud live together as brothers and sister. to care and support each other etc) " Sikuzaliwa pekee bali, Ni kufaana" (simply translate , a brother is not only that one person you share parents with or blood , but also those who come through for you when in need) this word have brought memoris and I want to honor and show my gratitude to this great man . I knew him way before he composed this song , i would attest and confirm that , he was indeed more than "Ndugu" (bro) to me and my family. He took us in , my brother (bigsoul) & I Immediately we finished high school and gave us a place to sleep for several years and in the process we were able to grow musically as well. we would accompany him to Stanley hotel, Village Market ..you name it. Through him ,at his house where the entire space was designed as a setup for music practice sessions , i was able to meet and be in the presence of great musicians like Abby Mudunia, Makadem , Eric Wainaina, Kidum (that was before kitambi) and many other artist who came to practice at the house or interacted in shows , concerts etc . and so this is how my music journey was molded back then. This great man , took my younger brother to school and paid the first school fees. He did all this things not only to me , but to many. This is even way back before we even knew we might be related. A Total stranger who would go beyond himself and support and take care of others. And to put the icing on the cake , he graced my wedding some years ago in lavington and entertained my guest the whole day and did not ask me to pay anything for the service . it has taken me this long (13 years) to appreciate what this man did in our lives. Yet , we have those we belong to, the same "blood" and many would not want a burden to themselves . They will not help when in need , not support a cause , a conviction , a dream. They only wait to call you brother when you become "an OBAMA" . Kweli Undugu sikuzaliwa pekee , Bali nikufaana. Thank so much for what you did for me and my family. you have contributed immensely to my family and now even as we shine musically or in another way, your contribution and impact of what you did to our lives still remain a legacy. We will not forget I honor you , i appreciate you and i love you . Asante sana
