Having become used to Apple trackpads that are high quality and allow clicking anywhere on them, I have not found another laptop that has a trackpad I don't hate. This is the #1 sticking point for me.

What about the Framework Laptop 16? It is a better competitor to this imo. It has a better keyboard, the keyboard isn't restricted to ISO layouts, the screen is 16 : 10 rather than 16 : 9, the fingerprint sensor actually works in Linux, it supports Ubuntu and Fedora officially, and it is the most upgradable laptop in a LONG time.
@mitya2 ай бұрын
The keyboard on the laptop is actually ANSI, not ISO. You can see it from the shape of the Enter key and the position of the backslash key. And with Tuxedo you can select from a variety of keyboard layouts, including custom ones.
@cameronbosch12132 ай бұрын
@mitya This must have been new, because just a year ago, they didn't have any recent ANSI options. This one must have been an exception. And that doesn't excuse the massive chin bezel; they could have EASILY fit a 16 : 10 screen like every other OEM...
@philipphollmann60222 ай бұрын
@@cameronbosch1213 How do you know the Framework's keyboard is better? Jay seems to like it alot on the Tuxedo. I agree on the chin bezel but ironically it is aesthetics where the Framework really sucks in my opinion. The Framework Laptop 16 is maybe the ugliest laptop I have seen in a very long time. It is not only the edgy old-school design that reminds me of clevo from the early 2000s, but even more the many seams caused by the palm rest parts, keyboard parts and port dongles, which let it look more like a Patchwork Laptop 16 LOL. In addition to that, these seams are prone to collect dust and dirt and I don't know if they may become loose over time. "it is the most upgradable laptop in a LONG time" - Well, let's wait a few years. Framework is not the first vendor who aimed to bring upgradeable graphics to laptops. The last try was from Dell (Alienware Area 51m) and they quickly canceled it, because it was not profitable. Before that, we had laptops with MXM graphics cards for many years, but on the one hand it was never meant to be user-upgradable because you could not buy MXM graphics cards on the market unless you found a used one on ebay for many hundred dollars and on the other hand, they were less efficient than today's soldered graphics due to power leakage at mechanical slots. Framework makes the same mistake like Dell: They use are proprietary part which only is compatible with their laptop alone. I doubt it will be profitable for them to buy expensive laptop gpus from nvidia or AMD to put it on stock in hope that enough customers who bought that specific laptop a few years ago will pay 500 or 600 USD to upgrade instead of reselling the whole laptop to buy a new one (with not only new graphics, but also new CPU, RAM, battery and a new chassis without signs of weardown). And if so, Framework can barely live from a small margin by selling gpu laptop parts. Manufacturers live from selling laptops and not spare parts. It does not look much better from a customer's perspective: Who do you want to sell your old Framework graphics card once you upgrade to a new one in a few years? You have to find people on ebay, who 1. are owners of one specific laptop model + 2. are searching for an old mid-range graphics card (Radeon RX 7700S = ~ RTX 4050 mobile) + 3. are comfortable to buy a used graphics card without guarantee. If you find no buyer, you will throw it into the trash. It is the same with the port dongles. If you don't need some of them anymore, do you make the effort to sell them on ebay for a few bugs? Who will buy them? Again, look out for customers of two Framework laptop models who search for used dongles to save a few bugs compared to buying new ones. In theory, the idea and vision is great. But in reality, a typical laptop might give you better value. You cannot upgrade ports, but most people are fine with the ports they get. Once, you wish for a faster graphics card, well the CPU might also need an upgrade (better performance, better efficiency). The battery might also need an upgrade? Or newer faster and more efficient RAM? Would also be great to get a chassis upgrade without small dents and scratches and signs of wear down. Simply buy a new laptop and sell your old one as a whole. There are always people who are happy with an old and used but functional laptop.

Framework doesn't have MUX Switch so it's worst for gaming, and 16:10 too...
@cameronbosch12132 ай бұрын
@StellarHarbor It does have the hardware necessary for one, I'm not sure why Framework doesn't have a manual option. Granted, on Windows 11 at least, MUX switches haven't mattered since the CA:SO update; and AMD's Radeon on Linux is still better than Nvidia in terms of driver support out of the box. The other thing is that Tuxedo is just repurposing other chassis to use for their laptops, which is why the specs are worse than on Framework's options and the fingerprint sensor afaik isn't working on Linux, unlike Framework, which works on both Windows and Linux. 16 : 10 is an advantage for me; I'd take the black bars in games but the additional screen real-estate when doing other things instead of having massive permanent bezels that could have easily fit a 16 : 10 screen anyway.

As a US resident, I hesitate to purchase computers from companies based in Europe. How is the shipping and support experience for non EU residents?
@cameronbosch12132 ай бұрын
@@QuantumKurator If you're fine with having a possibly wonky keyboard layout (not all Tuxedo laptops have the keyboard layouts used outside of Europe) and high shipping costs, then it's okay I guess.

Very interesting. How is the gaming performance? I have the InfinityBook 7th and 9th gen. The 7th Gen trackpad is much better, but I'm using an external keyboard and trackball. The 7th Gen Intel is often very noisy. The 9th gen AMD is completely silent!

any battery charging protection built-in? e.g. lock charging limit to 80% then stop?

It is interesting that the trackpad sucks. I had exactly the same problem with my System76 Galago pro. What's up?
@cameronbosch12132 ай бұрын
@NoHair-pk3xg That's because they're both using repurposed chassis. They're not build exclusively for the OEMs, so they unfortunately get the trimmings from better brands, like worse build quality, worse screens, worse touchpads, etc.

How do you get the keyboard LED's going. I have a new ThinkBook AMD Ryzen 7 but the keyboard LED's just won't work on Fedora 40. They do work on windows, but I am turning away from windows since getting into Fedora. An answer or help is much appreciated.

For those of you who may not be able to get a Tuxedo A good runner up would be the Lenovo brand E-series/T-series/and finally the P-series. Lenovo supports Linux 100% and you don't have to worry about being locked down to Windows11. Apple cant do that...😆

Already for 5 years I use Tuxedo laptop (Intel based) with Fedora. There is an issue with Tuxedo drivers and Control Center, because you need to install them from Copr repositories and sometimes after distro upgrade you have to find a new updated and working repository. But since 20 years ago I had my worst Linux experience only with Debian based distros, I avoid them for any cost and same applies to Tuxedo OS. 😀 About keyboard backlight, then it's too bright for everyday use, but you can turn brightness down in Tuxedo Control Center, where you can also change backlight color. One more great feature I recommend if you use your laptop mostly as stationary, then in Tuxedo Control Center under Settings -> Battery charging options, set "Stationary use". It will help to not overcharge your battery.

I like seeing more dedicated Linux machines , this one just doesn't wow me enough to move away from my ThinkPads. I also do minimal gaming on a laptop as that's what my desktops are for , so I might not the the right audience for this laptop.

Should have tested it with a Thunderbolt docking station. In my experience, that's where AMD laptops fail or are flaky at best. I own a Lenovo AMD-based Thinkpad and it doesn't really support a docking station with two monitors attached, while my 6-year old LG gram has no problems.
