Interesting how they just get straight into their news segment there. You have the tuning signal with the stock footage, then the logo with funky music, then the guy comes on, greets the viewer, then gets right into the information without any delay.

If done correctly (proper fading of the music and video/stock images from the control room), the transition to the news program won't look rushed or abrupt.

Say what you want, that opening title screen for the news was pretty funky in an entertaining way.

Hallo an alle!

The West German TV was receivable without problems in most of the DDR. Was the DFF also receivable in West Germany?

The GDR built high-power transmitters in the border regions but they were still unable to broadcast to a large part of West Germany. Those who could receive it in the West enjoyed its children's programmes and entertainment programs like Ein Kessel Buntes, whereas neither anyone from the West nor the East cared for news programs like Aktuelle Kamera and perhaps Der Schwarze Kanal. And just a bit of trivia, Blixa Bargeld, the vocalist of Einstürzende Neubauten, stated in an interview about the fall of the Berlin Wall that East German television was more interesting than West German television 🙂

In the late 1980s the east-german channels were on cable in the west... I don't think anyone asked for that, but back then there just weren't that many stations around and the cable company just picked up everything they could get to fill up the slots. We also had the dutch national tv, which was interesting, as it broadcasted US shows undubbed.

Meanwhile, in the east, the acronym ARD (the west-german national tv) was jokingly expanded into "Ausser Raum Dresden" ("[everywhere] besides the Dresden area"), as it was notoriosly difficult to pick up in that area (leading to people building colossal antennas on rooftops). Meanwhile, the west-germans called Dresden "valley of the clueless" for the same reason. A common thing you'd say to your coworkers at friday afternoons was "Have a good weekend, and good west-reception!".

Did they not have teleprompters in the east?
@EricNorton62710 жыл бұрын
Teleprompters appeared only after the switch to capitalism. TV news in the socialist countries was read from printed texts.

Eric Norton Amazing. How did we ever think it could last?
@SMGJohn9 жыл бұрын
+3506Dodge They did have teleprompters but being very bulky and expensive at the times, they rarely were used in the west only big studios could afford to use them. Also there is nothing wrong with reading from papers in fact a lot of people apparently preferred paper over the autocue.
@alexvonanders27272 жыл бұрын
In west Germany they didn't use teleprompers either, and read everything from paper until 2013

Just commentary on his positions on the reasons of the 1980s crisis, namely the power of corporations and the deficit due to public spending in the arms race
