The best version so far. I really tried to like the other Chinese version TV series later on but nothing beats this classic so far. Dicky Cheung's body language, attitude and tones as Sun Wukong is irreplaceable.

这部不比国内86版的差，小时候看了N次，超中意。现在西游记那么火，应该打上英文字幕，标题也要英文容易找到，让外国人也看看。

I have absolutely no idea what they are talking about but I’ve never been more impressed. Wukong actually fits his description plus how he moves and has fun quirks like putting one of his peacock feathers in his mouth is just so fresh to see. He actually looks to have fun in his performance. The edit as free comedy. But I guess that was considered impressive in the 90’s china. All in all. This is just a really good adaptation. From what I’ve seen so far.

I watched this version in Cantonese many times growing up. But the 1986 TV show Mandarin version was the best one, classic and more accurate to the original story, from the casts, the music, the scenes, characters designs...And this one is just for alternate comedy, funny adaption lol @4g63attack

Most charismatic and cheeky Sun Wukong is 1996. More accurate to the book is 2011. I'd recommend these two over the 1986 version, which while praised as the original is actually quite incoherent with poor directing and extremely limited by technology causing many scenes to be cut weirdly and difficult to comprehend (it is only praised by those who read the book because their brains can fill in the broken info easily through memory). Also the actor for 1986 did his opera interpretation of how Wukong walked, but the book never said that's how he walked, and his acting isn't amazing, so I'd suggest 1996 or 2011 versions for any newcomer because I know they will likely quit the 1986 version.
