I don't understand why parents in Hong Kong put so much pressure on their children in academic studies. For those parents who are not academically strong, why do they have the expectation that their children can outperform others in academic studies ? Some people are book-smart, while others may be street-smart.

Generally, there are three types of parent who tend to put much pressure on their children: 1. Elite, e.g. of high social status, maybe doctor or lawyer 2. Streetwise, not attending college or quit school early for bread and butter 3. Not thinking, follow suit For 1. They expect that their children should follow their pathway, They have sufficient resources and believe only excellence in academics can guarantee success in the future For 2. They do not understand how difficult and stressful can be when dealing with those academic stuff there is a girl who says her parents cant believe how she can get low score even with many tutorial classes For 3. They just passively think their children should do what others do, otherwise their children will be outperformed The three types share a similarity, they don’t listen or try to understand what their children are facing
