The Nigerian national anthem titled "Nigeria, We Hail Thee" was the first national anthem of Nigeria after it gained independence in 1960. The lyrics were written by Lillian Jean Williams, a British expatriate, while the music was composed by Frances Berda, a British music teacher. In 1978, this anthem was replaced by the current national anthem, "Arise, O Compatriots," whose lyrics were written by John A. Ilechukwu, Eme Etim Akpan, B.A. Ogunnaike, Sota Omoigui, and P.O. Aderibigbe. The music for the current anthem was composed by the Nigerian Police Band under the directorship of Benedict E. Odiase. Sick law makers and sick President!

Honestly, the house did not get it right by reversing to the old national anthem which negates human philosophy of backwards never and forward ever. If it becomes so pressing and necessary to change the National anthem by reintroducing the old one, really I would have advocated that the old and the 1978 one should have been blended together by experts to come up with a very new one. It is a wrong decision. I do not understand how 'Nigeria we hail thy' will bring unity, when in actual fact it was in existence when civil war took place between 1967 and 1970. To me, coming together in unity as a nation can't be the function of national anthem, but proper orientation of the citizens cum good representation by political class and superb governance. 16:05

A country lyrics for their national anthem is very vital as to inculcate in their citizens a strong spirit of bond of love for their country and patriotism acts by all the citizens; right from early childhood. This will give them sense of respect for their nation. I 100,% support the revert of it. My only concern is the timing and priority of the bill done , when they have enormous cancerous damaging issues ravaging the country as at now. This shows lack of emphaty and misplaced priority on the NASS Assembly.

I think BKO should do more research as an ace journalist. Some of the view expressed here were not factual. To start with, the Nigeria We Hail Thee anthem was composed at the request of the then government with advertorial for writers to submit entries irrespective of their countries. The music too was advertised, and selections were made by committee setup for that purpose. This information is there on the internet, a Google search will do. It is false that the colonia master imposed it on Nigeria in 1959. As for the why haste in passing the bill. If you pay attention to Mr. President, he's gradually restructuring the country. Part of the recommendation from the 2014 CONFAB was to return to the old, now the current National Anthem. More recommendations of that report have been slated to be implemented by this administration. More surprises are coming in the days ahead, and so we better brace up for changes. Nigeria We Hail Thee

Africans must stop using the word "tribe" to refer to themselves. The Europeans used the word "tribe" for Africans. The word Tribe has a primitive connotation, being small, undeveloped, not connected to the central government, etc. With modern development in African nations and cities, Africa has come of age. Studies in Anthropology and Sociology use "ethnic group" instead of tribe. It is a shame that Nigeria, the giant of Africa has gone back to the word "tribe" in their national anthem. Nigeria is going backwards to Colonialism and Neo-Colonialism. Africans should stop using the word "tribe". Africans should instead use "ethnic group" to describe or refer to themselves.
