For the final clue, when Greg mentioned that the country's named after an Italian city, I knew in an instant that the country could only be "VENEZUELA", b/c its name means "Little Venice" in Spanish, & the reason why it got its name is b/c when the conquistadors explored that area of S. America back in the early-15th c., they saw something that reminded them of the Italian city -- namely buildings built over water.
