I am a physical mediua collector and for awhile I felt like I was becoming one of just a few but lately its changed. People are starting to buy physical media again and there are a lot of people going back and thrifting them. DVD is still the most popular format and in fact is the highest selling above blu ray and 4K. I have been in that powers gone for days experience. We had a massive snowstorm in Newfoundland and it took out all the generators. I spent quite a bit of time cuddled under blankets with my wife watching Dario Argento movies on dvd. Good luck on your collecting ! Its worth it !

I had that notion years ago about dvd. If I have them physically I can back them all up and I'll always have them. Have around 1300 dvds including movies and tv shows. Its fantastic. The girlfriend went to rent A Nightmare On Elm Street this week, said it cost €10. I bought the entire collection for €15 and can watch any of them, anytime and forever. If you like specific movies/tv shows its a no brainer to me. Similar idea with physical games

I've been building up a good collection of DVDs in recent years, yes, Blu Ray is better quality, but they lack any substantial extras, where DVDs can be packed with BTS docs and the likes. I can see DVD going the way of vinyl and coming back in popularity, get them whilst they're cheap.

My husband and I lost power for almost a week during Hurricane helene, and I kept busy by listening to music, reading, coloring and listening to the radio. It sucked at times and luckily we got power back relatively quick compared to others, but it was really nice to have no other choice but to log off and focus on the here and now. We also didn't have internet or reliable cell service so all I had were select albums and singles I had downloaded but it gave me a chance to fully appreciate what I did have and think more critically about what the artist was trying to communicate. Very interesting experience 👌

I do have some games that are digital but primarily my collection is physical to me. It just feels safer to have it physically instead digitally because at any time they can take something digital away from you and you can never get it back Physical at least you have the option of always being able to rewatch or reuse it

I'm a long term film fan. - I worked in cinemas for near a decade, and before that ran a video shop for about a year. I always preferred physical media as it allows me to watch what I want, when I want, without paying a fee each time. Charity shops are great for DVD's, Blu-ray's at great prices. I have often picked up entire box sets of series for less than the price of a new DVD single film. Currently I have around a thousand titles on DVD, and about an equal number of books. - The most I have paid was around £50, for a box set of (?) Supernatural series 1 to 8, most single DVD's are around 50p or £1, sets are £1 to £10.

I have a physical collection of dvd, blu ray and 4k because as like you say if internet went off then you still have things to watch. Also the fact that films appear and disappear regularly across the streaming services plus no one can really afford to subscribe to every service and it's also cheaper to have a collection, although it's a case of having room to store them.

The image quality on the DVD doesn't bother me that much because with certain older films I don't have to see it super sharp and i have only 55 inches 4K TV.

If you are collecting tv/film media for actually watching (not wanting a nice shelf or wall of stuff), just torrent it and keep everything on a hard drive that plugs into your tv. If you want a bit of effort you can even set up a NAS and access your media anywhere. But plug and play usb hard drives work fine too. I have about 10TB of film and tv shows at the moment, ready to watch. Basically everything you complained about VHS, applies to disc media too in a smaller way. Better Quality, more stable medium, easier to backup, easier to play anywhere, less space taken up, and best of all... it's free.

Maybe Blu-ray is a norm for movies but even mega-popular TV like CSI has only ever been released on DVD, and they started in 2002; I think they tested a couple of later seasons but people just bought the DVDs. And sadly, in the UK, again probably due to infrastructure helped by the small size of the country, the general population seem quite happy with either streaming because, (despite you quite correctly saying, things like *Brittas Empire* are hard to find and actually end up being more expensive to subscribe) many prefer the convenience *OR* (and I heard this myself more than once, back when Supermarkets sold physical media because streaming hadn't reached the point of making 'physical' a 'collector only' item) people would see a movie they liked in the Blu-ray new releases and, despite what TV they may have, turn to whoever they were with and suggest they checked if they had it on DVD to save a little money. Sad to say waaaaay too many people I know, even to this day, say they "can't see any difference between Blu-ray and DVD"... personally I think a lot is down to people not actually *watching* with full attention but just casually whilst they also do their emails, check social media or play games on their phone. Just my opinion of course from limited observations... As you may have gathered by my comment (and my KZbin/Channel name 🤣) I certainly do collect physical media... even to the extent I won't pay for a 'pure' streaming service (ie one that's just streaming; I have *Prime* because I have that for physical purchases anyway) because I believe their business practises of not releasing their created content on physical media ever (like _Netflix_ seem to and _Disney_ used to and often still does) is killing my hobby of collecting, which I enjoy for its own sake *as well as* (not instead of, I would like to emphasise) having the movies and TV available to watch.

Back up your DVDs! In the future, if the power goes out and you want to watch some random episode of friends from your collection, you may find the disc has become unreadable. They don't have an infinite lifespan. It's already happened to older discs and some manufacturers produce discs which last longer than others.

Yeah in an apocalypse a portable DVD player, a handheld or a phone with digital rips of files as backups. But yeah new ones whether DVD, Blu ray, 4K BRs or the Chinese format I saw of Tech Moan covered of San Andreas the action film with the rock Dwyane Johnson that's format quality worse than DVD I think. It's worth a watch. I buy anime DVDs/Blu rays. Not many from thrift/second hand stores but more new releases rarely with series I am actually interested in. Pricey but betythrn online searching unless overseas anime films that don't go to the services or disk and waiting compared to the tv series all because of sales it's annoying we would support it but nope they won't do so. Only the biggest IPs get a cinema and even then those that could sometimes get 1 cinema....... Just get the physical or look online instead or give up supporting or seeing it at all unless searching for it. PSP Minis for sure are great of Indies offline then PSN and dead once Vita/PS3 stores go offline. But yeah 480p yeah on 32 inch I this fine but yeah bit rate or resolution and more are great on physical not streaming. Some are hard to find, for cheap old ones. New releases it varies. For me for anime I have to buy them new as I see them cycling in the really small shelf while live action/western shows are more reasonable ones. Heard of a few you mentioned some well known, some.niche. Yeah the prices, the sub prices, demand to watch them, in the shelf, cheap and whenever ready. Getting portable DVDs or the file digitally offline why not.
