What makes it hard is holding all the notes for their full value, especially those at the end of the phrases. She doesn't. She is cheating off a full beat at the end of several phrases.

It seems she can do just about what she wants with that voice of hers, she is truly outstanding and at the top of her game and maybe at the top as far as sopranos go. I have said this before I will again sopranos are born not made.

Souzay is not forgotten!!!! nor was he a lousy singer. His recording of this song is the best yet....... Todays singers benefit from the exposure afforded first by television and now by KZbin, that is why you don't hear him. If he were around today he would knock other average singers off their perches.

Schubert didn't write the words!!
@laetitiacavalli3204
@laetitiacavalli3204 Жыл бұрын
@@brookeggleston9314 in deed! But he chose to put these words to music after learning that he would soon die. It gives another dimension to the words that he in deed did not write, but chose to accompagny. This leaves a multitude of possible interpretations to posterity. From the simple sweetness of night and dreams, from, like @elisa Gauthereaux said, the momentary escape of day (he calls the night when day returns), from sadness, from mourning life, from accepting one's fate.

@Scott6373 Well shoot Reger for orchestrating it, I agree with. It's a conflict, hearing Ms. Fleming with her amazing ability to float a long line a pleasure, wishing all the time, like you, it was with the piano accompaniment. Check out Barbara Hendricks with Andras Schiff accompanying - it cannot fail to move, just remarkable.

RF's exquisite performance aside (pure gold!), this Reger orchestration is SO much more pleasing than the original piano accompaniment, which to my ear is always thunderous and poorly voiced, overwhelming the beauty of the vocal line and harmonies.

Kehret wieder heil'ge nacht Holder traume kehret wieder is it right, you german speakers, the first kehret instead of kehre? Hehe'' just a curiosity..cause critics failed finding an single error.
@AlexFromTheWoods
@AlexFromTheWoods 7 жыл бұрын
jeidi kim You're right, it has to be "kehre wieder heil'ge Nacht" without a "t". Actually she did the same mistake in the line "rufen, wenn der Tag erwacht", in which she sung "rufet".
@brookeggleston9314
@brookeggleston9314 5 жыл бұрын
@@AlexFromTheWoods She did neither thing! Her legato pushed the final *e* of kehre into the *v* sound of wieder. If her *t* on kehret had been more cleanly sung you would have noticed the difference. Nor did she put a *t* on rufen. Same sort of problem to hlame - she simply didn't pronounce it cleanly, but she didn't put different consonants on the end of those words. I did have to listen several times to clear it up in my ears!!

Well, the question is 6 years old: just to get it right: I checked in my grandfathers book from 1913 (Scheidemantel, Meisterweisen, Ernst Eulenburg Leipzig, Wien), page 120 Nacht und Träume, it says: ..Kehre wieder, heilge Nacht! Holde Träume, kehret wieder. (Why: one night singular and many dreams plural).

Well, she is not holding some of the notes for their full value, which is part of the challenge of singing this piece right. There are some dotted half notes which she is singing just as half notes. And, she is doing what many modern singers do, which I consider questionable. She isn't really singing the SONG. She is using the song as an occasion for making extremely beautiful sounds with her voice. She could just as well just intone the vowels, or a random set of vowels, and accomplish the same purpose. I do not see that she is investing herself in the words and expressing their meaning. She is wholly focused on making beautiful sounds. This is what the extreme sport of modern singing has often become. It's a shame. I believe that people one hundred years ago or more SANG much more expressively, because they had not developed the fanatic and extreme engagement in the sound they are making which modern classical song has become characterized by.

She should learn real German diction. Her second vowels in the thifthongs should be shorter and more open. And I wish the key was lower than the arrangement so there is more mystical tone.
