Description: This is how I accessed and adjusted that capped off idle circuit air-fuel mixture screw on my TW200. These bikes run lean from factory so they can pass some BS emissions laws. That causes hard starting and long warm-ups, and needing to use choke a lot until completely warmed up. Basically it turns these bikes cold-blooded, and this adjustment solves that problem.

So just for clarification..if you were sitting on your bike and you had turned your carb to get at the bottom..would the bottom of the carb be facing towards your right leg..most i see turn it the other way but they also disconnect the throttle cables..tilting it the way you did made it necessary to take off gas line, but you didnt have to disconnect throttle cables.. i already did this 2 years ago, but forget how,but now it is a pig to start in cold weather,so i want to turn my screw out maybe another half turn. Factory setting was 3/4 of a turn and i turned it out 1 1/2... but i want to try it at two turns . I think i can do this with a small screwdriver bit without even turning the carb..but dont know till i try.

Yeah I turned it so bottom of carb is facing the right side of bike as you’re sitting in it. For me it seemed easier to disconnect gas line than messing with throttle cables. Also I had to disconnect that flasher box module. But that was 5 seconds. Forgot to mention it in vid. 👍

Thanks for the video. I’m about to go do this to my 2020. My bike won’t start or even idle unless I choke it for a long time. My bike has just over a thousand miles on it. And it’s slowly getting harder to start. So 2 turns out from fully closed... maybe I’ll try 1 1/2 turns first. Maybe it won’t “surge”? Thanks for the very informative video.

I would try 1.75 turns out from being bottomed out. But who knows that might not work on your bike in your bike might like 1.5 or two turns out.

But I would definitely put it as far out as you can without any surging when you get First twist the throttle

Ok yeah I just got your comments. I tried 1.5 turns out and it’s still hard to start. I’m in Florida it’s like 80° out. Shouldnt need a choke. Lol so next I’m going 1.75 turns then 2 turns.

You're welcome! Hope it helped. This really only helps with startup and idle when cold but mine seems to run better all over the rev range a little bit after this. Might be placebo though! LOL

Hello, thanks for uploading this. Excellent help. I was wondering what your opinion was on ,when to try this. I have a new tw200, and wondering if doing this prior to engine break in, would be beneficial or detrimental. I have 380kms on it so far. Many thanks in advance for your consideration.

Hi, glad it helped! I don’t think it will affect break-in at all. It’ll just make your T-dub easier to start and warm up quicker. 👍

Thanks for the video. My TW200 just failed the new emissions test in France where I live. The bike does start and run easily with no choke in the spring/summer months. So I'm wondering if removing the metal plug and turning that screw all the way in might weaken the mixture enough to solve my emissions problem?

It might. I have no idea about those emissions tests. To me it’s insanity doing emissions testing on a 30 year old designed 196cc motorcycle engine. Governments are out of control over there.

@@bwxmoto Thanks. Do you think there's any reason why I shouldn't drill out the aluminium plug to allow screwdriver access? (Sounds like it was pretty tricky to get it out with the self-tapping wood screw)

@@Snoosemoose When you use a drill on anything it seems like the drill bit usually goes through and violently collides with whatever is under the thing you are drilling no matter how hard you try for it not to do that. So I suppose you could damage the the brass screw under it (unlikely) but as long as you're careful it should be fine. You could just completely remove the carburetor but that might take more time than using a self taping screw or whatever. Like I said in vid, there's a million ways to do it. It's pretty simple stuff. What I did in vid is just what I happened to try first. It probably took more time than it should have with the self tapping screw but it worked out. I don't think I had a drill or bit that would have allowed me to use a drill without removing the carb. I don't know what the laws are over there though. Maybe they'll throw you in jail for tampering with an emission device, who knows. LOL Europe is crazy. Emission testing a TW200 seems 🦇💩 crazy in the first place. 😆 But you might be onto something, adjusting the carb for it to pass their crazy test.

@@Snoosemoose Yeah no prob. You could remove the throttle cable and twist it for access on left side of bike without completely removing carb actually. Just get it more horizontal, should be fine. Maybe you could unhook more lines and twist it for access on the right side of bike too, I didn't have to though so not sure.

Yeah, it's like when you first open the throttle and you expect a certain amount of throttle like normal, but you get what feels like a burst of much more throttle for a split second, then it goes back to normal. It's only when you first crack open the throttle from idle, at least it was for me. And it happens when you're trying to modulate the throttle so you can let out clutch too, so it's super annoying and can make the bike jump forward more than you want. I just turned the screw back in until it stopped doing that and it was about 1.75 turns out from being bottomed out IIRC. Might be totally different for you though. Just have to try it.

Whats your rpms at idle? Mine seems to be idling high from previous owner i can start with no choke but after riding for a bit it sounds like its really high wondering if its normal. I assume they turned the idle up because the pilot jet is stuck. It seems to die if i try to start with choke.

I think about 1,500 rpm. But you set idle when bike is warmed up. Might help, might not.

Yamaha should update the TW with fuel injection. This is the one thing i don't like about carbureted engines: fidgeting with the air/fuel mixture.

That would be cool but then they'd probably have to redesign a lot of other stuff and I am sure a lot of the bike is grandfathered into the old regulations. It wouldn't be a TW200 anymore.

@@Tabbyf Yeah I think if they make any changes, it has to be re-certified or whatever. I bet TW200 will be discontinued soon unfortunately because those laws don't last forever. Eventually the laws will make it illegal to sell and that'll be it!

@@bwxmoto Negative , there will always be a market for a bare bones no frills vehicle. Look at the classic gen 1 of anything, unless there was a major issue they just keep turning them out. DR650, Z50, CT125, Beetle, Fiats, Lada the TW is right there. may not be imported into North America but everywhere where else no problems.

@@PlayingWithFireOutdoors I was referring to being legal to sell in the USA as it is with a carb. What happens in the rest of the world doesn't matter to people here. The environmental laws against older carbureted engines are just going to keep getting more and more strict. Look at California, pretty soon won't even be able to buy a damn lawn mower or weed wacker with gas engine.

I think I’d get one of those Chinese clone a TW200 carburetors on eBay. I think there’s a link in the description to the one on Amazon. I try that way first, people say they have good luck in the something like $40.

William Dupree Well I just checked the description on that carburetor on Amazon and it says 2001 to 2017 or whatever. I’m not sure if that will work on pre-2001 bikes or not. I bet you somebody on the TW 200 Facebook group would know!

Hmm. I've never heard anyone say that. I knew there were a few changes in 2001 but I wonder if you have a stock carb or if none of the pre-2001 bikes had the mixture screw.

Not really, this adjusts the pilot jet or idle jet for starting and idling. It might have a small effect at partial throttle but not a ton. These bikes run super lean from factory so at higher altitude it should be fine as the air thins out. People run stock jets up to 10,000 feet. It depends though, they probably all run a little different.

No it’s the idle circuit a/f mixture screw. Bike runs lean from factory.
