*UPDATE 04/04/2024* Cogent recommends starting with an oil level of 160mm and a spacer length of 72mm. Again, these are starting points some riders will need to adjust these parameters based off of ride preference.
In this video Mike walks you through the installation of Cogent fork springs and DDCs (Drop in Damper Cartridge) into our TW200 project bike.
Most riders know that they need to upgrade their fork springs to accommodate their weight and riding style, but few understand the benefit a pair of DDCs can provide to the front forks. You will gain increased control and response when braking, accelerating, cornering, and over unstable or uneven surfaces.
If you wish to purchase these items for your bike, follow this link to our TW200 suspension page.

Thanks for showing the hiccup with the spacer. Makes me feel normal.

Haha, you're welcome! We're all human and need to laugh sometimes at our own mistakes. This one happened to be too much preload.

Funny guys! Thanks for not editing out your mistake, we all make mistakes and we have to be able to laugh at ourselves. DDc's are a great improvement for any old style forks.

Thank you and we're glad you enjoyed our "oops" haha. DDCs really work wonders on older style forks.

What about the washer that is on top of thr spring?

Yes, please re-install that washer on top of the fork spring. Good catch! After reading your comment I had to watch the video again and checked our "old oil" container with a magnet and nothing was sticking. At some point before we got this bike, the forks had been opened up for some reason. In one leg the fluid was completely different from the other, and there were different fluid capacities. I'm going with they forgot to re-install them just as we did. 😅🤣

What spring rate did you install? Are you happy with it or would you do a different spring rate if you were to do it again?

I personally (Tom) would have gone with the .70kg springs as I ride more aggressively than others here at the shop. With it being a shop bike that others will ride, we settled for the .60kg springs. It is a big improvement over stock and when combined with the DDC's, it really changes the ride. The front end is plush, but not soft / spongy while cruising and then as you ride harder the DDC's really begin to shine.

Have you or anyone else compared to the Racetech gold valve kit? I know this is much easier to do... Just wondering if it's worth it to do the gold valves...

We have tested them in the past and they both perform amazingly. Especially, when compared to the stock suspension components. What we've found and maybe we can do a little video on this but, the DDC's are for everyone but, more so for the rider that doesn't want to possibly have to open their front forks up a few times to get the suspension dialed in. Cogent did an exceptional job finding a happy medium for most riders. Racetech Gold Valves, however, offer more tunability by the end user. In theory they both do the same thing as each other, convert damper rod system into a cartridge style fork through the use of predetermined shims within the cartridges. The other difference with the Race Tech Gold Valves, is that you more than likely are going to have to modify your damper rods, meaning there is no going back to stock. With that all being said, if you're looking for something simple that is going to be a big improvement over stock but, also don't plan on doing a bunch of racing, the Cogent DDC's are what you want. If you want total tunability out of the system, then Race Tech Gold Valves are what you want. I hope this helped and didn't create any confusion.

@@TeamProCycle thanks for the awesome reply! Maybe if I was in my 20’s and rode hard and more frequently would be the gold valves. Sounds like DDC’s for me! Thanks again! Got some winter projects coming up I see!

What do the DDC’s do?

They pretty much turn your damper rod forks into cartridge style forks.

How about telling us what it's going to do in the video? How does it work?

The DDCs will offer a more controlled riding experience. By using a lighter weight oil the damper rod system is completely bypassed and utilizes the shim style valving in the DDC cartridge. The shim is made to a specific thickness and is combined with a specific spring to allow oil to pass through at a custom rate based on the pressure of the oil being forced through the system while riding. With this method the dampening and rebound can be controlled through the flow of fork oil.
