A better day in the workshop today as TWC the Invacar lends a hand, ferrying me to ‪@CambrianClassicsLtd‬ as I attempt to fix my Citroen GSA. More on that next time!
TWC is an Invacar Model 70, a blue three-wheeler built for wheelchair users in the 1970s. The design is by AC and they were classed as invalid carriages (hence the name Invacar).
TWC merchandise, and other lovely items, are available at HubNut.org - thanks.

When you bought TWC I thought you'd seriously lost your mind, and I hated it. Now its my favorite member of the fleet. It just looks like oodles of fun to drive and it comes across just how much you enjoy driving it and how she cheers you up, and cheers other people up. Even that idle sounds makes her sound like a contented guinea pig chewing dandelion lol.

Wonderful to see TWC out on an adventure. It was TWC that hooked me on HubNut in the first place, and I just loved how driving TWC completely changed your mood; that's what cars like TWC are all about, and why we own and drive them! We have nothing fun like these here in Canada, sadly, as I'd love to own one. TWC has the most fabulous engine sound (love air-cooled engines), thank you. This made my day.

This reminds me of my Mk1 R5. Realistically, the low city gearing gets frustrating in an everyday 21st century setting. But for the experience out and about, listening to the engine sing away, feeling the comical body roll on corners, it just lights up your face ❤

So nice to see TWC get an Italian tune up. 1:31 takes me back: the intent expression of someone starting a car with carburettor and manual choke, on a warm day, knowing it won't need much choke, and listening to see whether a smidgeon* is enough or whether it still needs a smidgeon and a half. Kids these days with their EFI. I shudder to think of what it will be like when they apply AI to engine control. * This is the way I spell it but the spell checker objects; I see Shorter Oxford lists it under "smidgen", whilst recording spellings "smidgin" (never heard of it) and "smidgeon". BTW, my optometrist, Chinese originally from Vietnam, when making fine alterations talks of adjusting something "smidgeonly." I enjoy having my eyes checked.

This has absolutely made my day! Back in the 60s/70s my paternal Grandfather had one of these following a WW2 injury. My Dad has fond memories of crouching down in the front while being taken to school on rainy days! I'll have to send him this! I'm a wheelchair user and I have a highly adapted 2022 Ford Tourneo Custom that I drive using hand controls and a tiller not dissimilar to TWC's though the brakes are operated similar to a set up on a push bike. So it's great to see a very distant ancestor of my van's up close. Big fan of yours and if you're ever in Lincolnshire/Humberside, I'll happily show you all the adapted bits on the van.

You didn't need a meter to check the oil pressure switch function; just ground the wire to the switch and the light should come on. If it does, the switch is the culprit, if not it's bulb or live supply.

I am both a full time wheelchair user and a car enthusiast. I have nearly 30 years behind he wheel now. Sadly I was to young to ever get to drive one as the had for the most part been taken off the road by the time I passed my test in the mid 90’s. Even though I know that these thing were dangerous and antisocial (as in you couldnt take anyone with you) there is something in me that wants to drive one. I think its because I respect and admire what these things were intended to achieve, and to be honest you do have to wonder if the ability to be as independent as we can now be as disabled people would even exists if it wasnt for this plucky little thing? Deeply floored but very important as you say in the video. I hope I get to try one some day.

I used to service these Ian back in the day. Yours is the only model 70 I’ve seen with the choke and heater controls on the roof, all others were on the floor? I have changed a few belt and pulley sets, but certainly not at every service. Your dynastart belts are easily tensioned by moving the 6 available shims around as required. Love when you drive Twc as the noises are a real memory tug. Thanks
@HubNut

Hi Chris. Cheers. The controls are odd. She's a very early example so I guess they quickly learned that this wasn't the best location... Belts seem to have stretched so I can't adjust them any further. I do have replacements. Somewhere...

TWC is a Model 70 Mark A, hence the roof mounted heater/choke controls this was moved to the floor starting with the introduction of the Model 70 Mark B in Mid 1974 :) and a very few Model 70 had the heater/choke controls mounted to the underside of the dashboard, I only know of one surviving example so equipped its also worth noting that originally TWC would of had the gear change coming out of the dashboard (thats what the slot under the map light is for) but as with the heater controls this was moved to the floor with the Mark B, AND in the late 1970's a retrofit program was applied to move the gear change to the floor on all Mark A's as well (but the heater/choke controls remained roof mounted) despite what HubNut says in the video about these being "death traps", which I really dont think is fair in the context of also owning a 2CV for example! the Model 70 was actually crash tested (fairing no worse then other 1970's cars of the time) and the designed was then refined to improve safety using the data from the crash tests, hence the moving of the gear change to the floor for example :)

Oh, thanks for the info, that's interesting. I also remember driving the odd one that had a steering wheel rather than a tiller. Were those very common? Also wondered if you had any info on the model 67? If I remember it was strange hybrid of a model 66 Villiers running gear with a front similar to a model 70. Any info gratefully received. Thanks
@LightBulbFun
@LightBulbFun Жыл бұрын
@@chriswilson263 the Model 70 had 3 main steering options handlebar control like in TWC :) this was the most common, designed for someone with use of both of their arms, then you had single handed Tiller control either left or right sided, for someone who only had the use of 1 arm/hand, these often but not always also had a foot pedal or 2 taking up some of the controls, but they could be had in fully single handed configuration, so you could be the Hand from Adams family and still drive one! and then you had steering wheel control, with or without foot pedal controls, primarily designed for people with weak arms, the steering wheel and box acting as a means of gearing to lighten the load, they where not very common at all The AC Model 67 produced from 1967-1971, was the direct predecessor to the Model 70, it is also Known as the Fibreglass AC Acedes, or the AC Acedes Mk14 Mk14A and Mk15 (the previous revisions of AC Acedes was the ally bodied Model 57) as you say the Model 67 was a Ministry standard specification Villiers machine, hence the similarities to the Model 66 which was the Villers powered Invacar Mk12 :) although the Model 67 looks a lot like a Model 70 from the outside, they shared nothing in common, under the skin the Model 67 was more or less just a re-bodied Mode 57, it was a bit of a stop gap machine for AC while they got the Model 70 fully developed Invacar on the other hand just kept producing the Invacar Mk12 upgrading bits and bobs to keep it current with the Ministry's specfications, until finally replacing it with the Model 70 under ministry orders hope this helps clear things up :)

LightBulbFun, thanks so much for replying, your knowledge is really impressive. I came across various strange models during my relatively short employment ( 78 to 81) and struggle to remember the different variations I’ve driven. I did various and frequent short and long journeys in both model 70’s ( mainly) and model 66’s , including at least 1 possibly 2 model 70’s that had the updated 600cc engine and were really fairly quick! Coincidentally my wife was brought up in Thundersley Essex, the home of Invacar/ Greeves , and I’ve driven past the original site. Once again, thanks for the info, it’s really appreciated. Cheers
