Thanks for the video. I had spent a year building my studio and getting wiring etc. where it needed to be and then in January of 2019 my audio quality when recording started developing minor but strange problems. In forums etc. the suggestions were always about the cables, mics, preamps etc. Problem was these had performed very well until January. After researching and looking at the dates of recordings and when the problems started it got down to being related to Windows updates. I was used to shutting down background process, network, antivirus etc when I did analog video and so since things were going so well didn't think about having to get back to that. Your video summarized exactly what I was seeing and I am working on implementing changes now. The info here was very useful. Thanks.

Not a lot more to say. Page files take up a load of space and Windows takes processing power to manage and move it about. Set it to a set figure and it won't do that. 4GBs is loads - we have lots of RAM, don't really need page files anymore. If it's helpful - use it - it might make no difference whatsoever. Why not, not do it and see if your system is working well - if not then try it, if it is then ignore it! We don't need to understand it in order to benefit :)

tip for those on newer windows update. if you do the regedit , restart, and still don't see the high performance setting, go to create power plan. then itll appear there. select it as the base, then just name your power plan the same. then save. now when you see and select high performance, in its advanced settings you will see all the options to tweak just like in this vid. p.s. creating plan without doing regedit, on latest windows build, will not make high performance appear. so the regedit is needed and works on my 2017 pro with i5 and 8gb of ram.

Thanks for your tips. I'm new to windows audio coming from OSX and I've been running some audio tests with my internal realtek sound card and trying the WASAPI driver and ASIO driver. I'm getting CPU instability performing some tests with spiking and audio breakup though. Like with U-he DIVA vst I can get 6 instances of 2 note chords and it will play fine around the 45% CPU usage mark (Divine quality setting) - Then if I add one more instance I get serious audio glitching at CPU spikes to 100%. The same thing happens with a 3 note chord test but it starts glitching on 6 instances instead. With sylenth1 i can get 200 instances though. With repro-5 I get about 8 instances on an 8 voice preset with 95% cpu usage without much audio breakup and 18 instances on a 2 voice preset. This is at 480 samples. with the WASAPI driver. I'm still waiting to buy a new audio interface - will this massively reduce cpu spikes and provide much better, more stable performance or should I still be able to get it with the internal card?
@MoltenMusicTech6 жыл бұрын
Could do - with laptops it's impossible to predict exactly what you can and cant do. Using my guide here you should be able to minimise the issues and give you some room to make music - and that's what you have. Stability may be down to how well a particular plugin is able to use multi-threads in a multi-core processor. An audio interface should make things smoother - yes. But also download and run the LatencyMon test - www.resplendence.com/latencymon - it should be able to tell you if something inside your computer is causing a problem. If so then see if you can disable that part and see if that makes a difference.

Thank you for this helpful video. I feel a little guilty that you make it so easy to implement these optimizations and are not asking for money. (uh, please don't) I would like to know if you have a video (or would consider making one) on "over clocking" a desktop PC? I would pay for that one! Cubase 9.5 has a "use Steinberg Power Scheme". Is "Windows 10 best performance " better to use than Steinberg's power scheme? And why? Thanks again and know I'm a subscriber now.
@MoltenMusicTech6 жыл бұрын
Overclocking is a bit tricky because it's unique to the motherboard you're working on. Most of the tweaks I do actually prevent overclocking and keep the CPU at a stable rate - I feel that in audio systems you need solid stable predictability. And if you want noise under control then you don't want to be running lots of fans to keep a hot system quiet. So... sure, overclock if you like, I have done so successfully in the past and if you can pull off a mild one then go for it - but i'm not the person to tell you how.

@sonichedgehog366 жыл бұрын
Man, you were absolutely right! I just purchased a Sennheiser HD 800 along with an Objective2 with Booster Board (meaning THD is well under .001%, or insanity levels for detail retrieval) and can corroborate this is not audiophoolery in the slightest. Performing a blind test of myself and a family member between Balanced and High Performance modes after disabling Connected Standby, it was plainly (and painfully) obvious which was which. One possible explanation is Windows 10 is putting the Realtek Audio devices (common in many PCs; this may also be the case for other sound cards and codecs) into some sleep-like or low power mode whenever it is running in with the Balanced power setting (required, unfortunately, for Connected Standby), thereby severely harming the audio quality. Someone else found the same as myself here ( superuser.com/a/1120662 ), and it is saddening Microsoft has not stepped up to the plate with their "Creators" update to actually improve sound quality which is far from "Creators" quality in its current state. Fortunately, I actually know someone who is directly connected to the Surface team, and I have had tweets liked by Panos Panay himself on Twitter, and I will bring this to their attention--maybe they could implement a workaround that disables whatever in the OS kernel is stifling the sound quality.

Hi Robin, just to say I found what was causing the audio and video playback error. Just to add I am a newbie to this music production malarkey so have just purchased a Novation audio hub 2x4 and downloaded Abelton 9Live Lite which came with it ,downloaded the Audiohub drivers then selected Asio as recommended, audio in Abelton works fine but this setting caused my problem with video playback, so I deleted the audio hub drivers and changed back to MME/DIRECT X in Ableton and that restores the video and audio for KZbin etc and audio in Ableton seems ok as well, is this setting ok for music production? Loved your review on Bigwig 2 and cannot make up my mind between Albeton 10 and Bigwig but it seems that Bigwig is better value and the sound modulation capabilities' in Bigwig look exciting, your advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
@MoltenMusicTech6 жыл бұрын
Odd! Probably a sample rate clash. If you are trying to run ASIO at the same time as regular apps then make sure your project is set to the same sample rate and the driver doing the windows sounds. Otherwise MME/Direct X is fine, it just has more latency than ASIO - but if that's not a factor for you then go with it.

I might be switching from apple to pc, havent used windows in about a decade. I hear there can be latency issues and random audio drop outs and crashes. But are these issues typically with older pcs that arent powerful enough? Or are these common issues with older windows OS? If I get windows ten and an i9, plenty of RAM and a fast SSD with the right motherboard, you know, just a current build, what should I expect? I just never used windows for music before, with Mac I just turn on logic and I dont mess with settings really. Its just apple keeps trying to make things more isolated to work better for apple itself but seems to not care about any compatibility with any usb 2.0 devices, and they are changing their processors to ARM processors in there computers soon. I feel this will cause more issues, I see so many complaints about current os updates, especially on their new computers. So im just wondering, what are common issues with windows? What causes latency aside from what you covered here? If I have an audio interface, is ASIO necessary for me? Do plugins and software like Pro tools usually known to get buggy with windows updates? Do viruses truly cause permanent damage or is information usually retrievable if my files arent backed up. Thing is with apple and new devices, their T2 chip will encrypt and basically erase your whole drive if there is a random issue. I do backup files but I dont like this, I dont like not being able to swap out something if there is an issue either. However, I hear vague comments that windows isnt as stable but im not sure why people say this, im trying to understand what the issue is, iv heard people having to reinstall OS but for what reason? Do things tend to randomly go haywire sometimes? Also iv heard people complain about drivers, but again I dont understand, dont you just download drivers from a companies site, are basic drivers not included in windows, or if they are included, are there supposedly better ones? Sorry for all the questions but I cant find any real specific answers anywhere just vague complaints! What should I expect when operating windows in terms of common roadblocks for music aside from this video? Thanks for any help
@MoltenMusicTech4 жыл бұрын
The basic answer to your question is that if you buy a crap PC you'll have a crap experience when trying to run professional audio software. If you buy a decent PC from a supplier of audio and video PCs then you'll have a fabulous experience. Assuming you have a decent computer then the software runs the same on Windows 10 as MacOS - just as stable, same low latency etc. It's true that MacOS tends to have drivers built in for audio interfaces. With windows you may have to download a file from the manufacturer and run it - job done. The only other roadblocks are yourself. If you install cracked software or go to dodgy places on the internet then you open up your system to corruption from virus' and crap - so don't do that. If you don't want to buy a system from a supplier of audio PCs then you might need to tweak Windows a bit just to prevent crappy bits of software from getting in the way - again, don't install crap and it won't be a problem. Otherwise build it yourself as i've detailed here - kzbin.info/aero/PLzR35OQr-uwvt4L35vwK66grX5vyVsC7O Hope that helps.
@heythere69834 жыл бұрын
@@MoltenMusicTech I actually started watching your build series last night after I commented. I appreciate it. I started looking at some audio pc builders, the prices get high up there too it seems. Maybe the best option is to build it myself, or buy the parts and have someone build it for me if its cheaper , idk. One thing I keep seeing , forgive me if you mentioned it in a video I might have forgotten. But why do all these companies have one drive for operating system and multiple other drives for storing VSTS and things like that. Doesnt it make the communication and operation slower by dividing things into different drives and having them communicated to each other? Wouldn't a modern SSD with enough storage suffice for OS and VSTS all at once?
@MoltenMusicTech4 жыл бұрын
There’s no discernible difference between running your projects on different drives or the same drive as your OS. Some companies like Avid actually insist that you use separate drives. Usually the reason is logistical. If you keep your projects separate from your os drive then you can backup and reinstall the os without it affecting your data. Similarly if you do infect yourself and it takes out Windows your projects will be safe. It also makes it easier for you to pop out a drive filled with your projects and take it to another studio. There are many reasons why it’s sensible to keep them separate.
@heythere69834 жыл бұрын
@@MoltenMusicTech ahh so If I get a virus or malware, it would likely cause an issue specifically to the OS but not other data aslong as they are on a different drives? Or if there is a virus issue ,it can affect my other drives aswell, with projects and vsts, however, it will be less likely? Thanks, that gives me a better idea. I have been reading the past few hours , Iv seen dpc latency can be harder to resolve on a laptop rather than desktop due to not easily having access to certain pieces of hardware inside, would you say this is accurate? laptop pc builds are interesting to me except I dont know if they will have loud fans that would make their way into a vocal recording if in the same room. Thats one of my concerns. Loud fans in audio. I dont know if you would recommend laptop builds in regards to that. Ill leave it there with all the questions, I appreciate your help man. Im getting a better understanding for sure!

Yes laptops can be more troublesome as you have no control over the tech being used. A $3000 laptop can have the same basic DPC problems as a $300 one. Fans yep can be a problem so get something lower powered that runs cooler.

Then for the power profile try "Add new profile" and then you should see an option for High Performance. I hope that helps.

Thanks. I had to create a custom setting and I got the high performance. I am now enjoying playing my guitar with no pops and crackles !

When I changed the setting in regedit I didn't have high performance when I rebooted.. I double checked the setting and the value was still at 0???
@MoltenMusicTech6 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend trying again - double/triple check that you are in the right place and that you have permission to alter the registry. Also when you go back to the power settings you might to "Create/add new power Profile" in order to be able to select High Performance.

The most important tip: Get a router that can block M$ updates, telemetry, etc. It's called NGFW.
@MoltenMusicTech3 жыл бұрын
I’m afraid this will either have no effect at all or prevent you from receiving updates that can dramatically improve audio performance. So, sorry, not an important tip thanks.
@satamototo3 жыл бұрын
@@MoltenMusicTech , stopping M$ from messing with your PC or sniffing around is good in general, not only for audio performance. Whatever you like :) There is distro called OPNsense and extension Sensei for it. They are both free to use with premium features only if you want.

Is it, is it really? One of the reasons Microsoft doesn't do much to improve audio on Windows is because there's no data that people are using it or need it - because audio pros have traditionally turned off telemetry and updates. So we are shooting ourselves in the foot with that kind of thing. The best thing you can do for your DAW is keep it simple, so apply some helpful tweaks like in this video and then stop fussing around with it - the more complex you make it the more self-support you'll have to do. You do whatever you like but it's not a great tip for everyone.

Awww man, no one's upset mate - try imagining my tone as someone chatting amongst friends - there's no agro here. This is my channel and I'm protective of the information on it. While I appreciate you may be just trying to help I believe it's not actually a helpful tip for the reasons I've given and so I feel oblidged to say so. I'm sure in other circles people would welcome this advice but i'm afraid it's outside the scope of what I'm trying to offer here. So thanks.

Ok - assuming you're asking about hibernation as that's what i'm talking about at that time frame then I don't think your drive type has anything to do with the annoyance of hibernation. I'd recommend simply doing as I'm suggesting especially if you're new :D

@@MoltenMusicTech Oh sorry I dont know why I said 15:20, its more around 14:20 - The one you talk about before Hibernation; Virtual Memory.
@MoltenMusicTech4 жыл бұрын
Same again really, it doesn't have anything to do with drives or how much memory you have. I say in the video that it's not really necessary but i find putting it to the same value in each can be, in some circumstances, beneficial but it's more of a tweak for low powered systems. But when in doubt why not just follow the instructions and see what happens.

The best tweak for this "creators update" is to get rid of it ASAP and make sure it or the next ones are never installed. The darn thing made my brand new high end computer unstable just because I have a Firewire sound card. Got blue screens all day long after it was installed and it just got worse with the next ones.

I've been in the industry for 21 years. Disabling anything that slows your CPU down when it's just doing light use such as browsing is just plain wrong. Anything that requires more power will shoot up to full speed. No point running your CPU 100% all the time, waste of energy and won't last as long.
@MoltenMusicTech6 жыл бұрын
I've been in the industry for at least 21 years and 3 minutes so i win! See the thing is that i'm interested in solving problems. Browsing the internet is not what we're talking about - we're talking about music production. The problem in the case with many computers and audio software is that the time it takes for the CPU to spin up is enough to cause an audio glitch - or many continuous glitches if the CPU cannot maintain its speed. With audio software and plug-ins you get massive variations in processing load and so the CPU doesnt know what to do with itself. So... how to solve the glitching problem? Set the CPU to maintain the speed, so it's always on, at the right speed, steady, ready to process audio. It completely solves the glitching problems. If i can't run glitch free audio then the CPU is a waste of time and I may as well not have the machine.
@EXITMUSIC20116 жыл бұрын
I ran a company in Machester and a lot of my clients were heavily into music production, Chase and Status, Badly Drawn Boy, Elbow, etc we built music production PCs for them without issue. If maxing out your CPU works for you then that's ok, not everyone will have identical hardware/compatibility.
@MoltenMusicTech6 жыл бұрын
That's cool and if you're running desktop processors then you are not going to have anywhere near the problems that people get using laptop or hybrid systems. If you know what you're doing and are not encountering any issues then - awesome, do that. However, the 9000 views on this video would suggest that that is not everyone's experience. And if you check out the rest of the comments you'll see a ton of people remarking on how this has helped get their system in order. And just to be clear it's not about maxing out the CPU - you're not adding any load to it, simply preventing it from speed-stepping. And different generations of processor worked differently, so you've got to do the tweaks that are going to cover as wide a selection of technology as possible - as you say not everyone has the same hardware. As i say it's about solving problems and if you're not having any then excellent! Although then why are you watching this video....? :)

Any advice on tweaking the graphics card driver and finding the best version to run?

Yes, manually download the latest. Do a clean custom install, leave out 3D and the GeForce experience (assuming nvidia). If it doesn’t work well then try an earlier version.

Hi Robin, after making the regedit change to show the high performance mode in the power settings, I was still unable to see that feature. After a bit of searching, I found this post on the Microsoft site: goo.gl/xkiCx9 Does the information in this post (moving the slider on the power icon in the taskbar to Best Performance) accomplish the same thing?
@MoltenMusicTech6 жыл бұрын
Hmm... don't know. On my Surface Pro I don't get a battery slider. If you right-click the battery icon do you get a "Power Options" option? Which then takes you to the control panel power options? The regedit edit has always worked for me and you have to be able to get to those advanced settings. Have you rebooted? Make sure you try it again.
@FunSizedDragon6 жыл бұрын
I didn't see a high-performance option at first either. However, when I clicked on "create a power plan" to the left, I was able to set it to high. Remember to change the advanced settings after this because they will be default in a new plan.

Ooo - good tip - i'll stick that in the description.

Could changing the minimum processor state to always be 100% potentially shorten the lifespan of your laptop?
@MoltenMusicTech6 жыл бұрын
Shorten it from what to what? Have you ever had a laptop where the CPU has run out of life? This isn't running the CPU at 100% usage, it's simply keeping it on and ready at it's rated speed. Terrible for battery life, but that's not what we're doing here.

jkunblade I mostly have them both set to 99%. That way, it uses full spec processor speed but without the turbo. The turbo only last for a few seconds anyway and it also keeps the fan noise down. If I do need the extra power (mostly while rendering) I just set it to a 100%. Just not all the time.
@FunSizedDragon6 жыл бұрын
Good idea. Just remember to use caution with power. “The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long” and all that stuff.

But then if your laptop is not able to run music software without glitching then you might as well not turn it on - then you can have it in perfect condition forever!

Quite a bit of crap advice in here. Such as: Startup programs that pop up "right in the middle of something vital ..." NO. They start when you start up Windows. That's why they're referred to as "startup".
@MoltenMusicTech6 жыл бұрын
Ahhhh, or do they??? The thing is that these can be programs which have been started and are active running the background of Windows. Then they might pop up with an advert, or a reminder of something, a notification - like a messenger program or email. They don't do all their stuff on their first run - they are not one-shot deals. But the great thing about these tweaks is that you can pick and choose and use them if you wish - see if they make any difference to your system. If it's of no use to you then ignore that tweak - but, if you're someone who has lots of background stuff coming up and making a mess of your mix then this is going to help you out. Or not.... so i challenge your assertion of crapness.

Wrong again Johhny. Adobe, google, firefox, apple updates fire up periodically and check for new version of stuff on the web. Lots of network services broadcast and open ports to process plug and pray or lanman stuff. Bonjour, netmidi; Indexing service etc. Then there are AVs who want to sniff every wav file as its loaded into you vst. I use Sysinternal's Autoruns and have been using Russinovich's stuff for 20+ years to tune servers and workstations for single application service, There are dozens of cycle stealers that autostart and more every version. It's not crap advice. Peter Walker Microsoft MVP
