Memphis Slim was my introduction to piano boogie woogie blues in the late 70's. Sonny Buy Williamson is one of my favorite all time harmonica players up there with Big Walter and Snooky Pryor.
@TheDavidfallon Жыл бұрын
Slim is so unarguably cool. His piano stylings are delicious, somehow both down-home earthy and big city sophisticated. Matt "Guitar" Murphy is a brilliant soloist and accompanist. His riffs and licks are jewels of precision and invention.

Matt Murphy was a pretty sophistcated guitar player. It is worthwhile taking a closer look at his style. He and Memphis Slim complement each other beautifully.

Was thinking the same thing. Matt did not play predictably at all. He was very versatile and also had a lot of country in his playing. A good pairing, because Memphis Slim was not straight down the line, either.

I caught M.T. at a bar in Atlanta during the early '90s. Someone mentioned it was their friend's birthday that night. In an utterly casual, jaw-droppingly musical instant, he began playing "Happy Birthday" with "The Old Gray Mare She Ain' What She Used to Be" as counter melody. Matt Murphy said Sonny Boy Williamson was a "righteous dude"
