I"m a walnut hill alum too and you can see her training. She is really good. I never got to see her perform till now really. She was a few years younger than me.

You have a wonderful belt range but I love the first part of this song when it's mostly head voice, it's absolutely gorgeous! Your tone is very natural thank you so much.

This video is amazing, and in response to other comments...Who cares what color of skin the singer has? This is for a showcase, not an actual musical performance. That is what a showcase is for-to showcase your talent. Period. And who are you to say that a person sounds "black" or "white"? Yes, there are some stereotypes of certain styles that go with different races, but they are stereotypes, not the expected norm. Ashley, you are amazing!

I know that this was forever ago and it's probably a mute point, but you should take into account that the show is set in the 19th century South, in which it's absolutely common for people to have 12 (or more) children (especially if they're prone to death and illness). Did I creep you out by commenting two years later? Just trolling old UMich vids. lol

um... no seems to show that she (the character) really knows each of them as a person and not just a list of names

beautiful the whole way through, great voice and well acted. I just wish at 3:34 she hadn't done "musical theatre arms." I feel like it cheapened the moment just a little. Dessa Rose isn't that kind of show I guess

I can understand your frustrations, unfortunately with this clip, this wonderful woman singing IS BLACK, which dispels your previous comments. I attended this particular concert in which there were around 12 songs, only 2 of which had "black oriented material". And to keep the black and white theatre community educated, both musicals "Dessa Rose" and "Dreamgirls" were written by white people.

attending Walnut Hill doesn't mean you're going to be successful in musical theatre. sorry.
