You would think that after being a fan for almost 5 years I would have the music and the lyrics all figured out but thats what I love about watching people react to their music. My interpretation of the song changed in October 2016 when I was admitted into a mental health hospital, cause you know depression and anxiety lol anyways, we would go to an art room everyday and we got to listen to music on the radio. Since Heathens was only a couple of months old, it played on the radio quite often. I was singing it while I was drawing one day and once I got to the phrases, "Just because we checked the guns at the door doesn't mean our brains will change from hand grenades..." and the rest of the verse, I was like "oh shit this is literally us". There were obviously some strange people there (including myself) and we all had problems so it fit perfectly and now every time I hear the song, I think of the people I met in there and hope they're doing well.

Heathens tells two stories , one by the lyrics and ither by the video, but fits perfectly when combine. Background: This is when Stressed Out become so popular that they gain more fans and Erny not feeling it. So this song is actually a warning and advise at the same time. Lyrically, the song explain the old fandom, the one who committed since the 12 person gig. The murderers, the psychopath and what not, the old fandom are really insecure and protective towards TØP. We were afraid the new fandom will ruin our boys if they're elevated to mainstream music. Thus the lyric warns newcomers to beware of the old fandom. Also, advising the old fandom not to judge the newcomers since we don't know why they're here. Visually, the video explains TØP stance in this issue. The prison represent the underground scene of their music, they're not in the mainstream media. Though they're in prison, they still do what they like to do (Tyler have arts on his cell wall, Josh still drumming in cell). Their sudden fame of Stressed out is explained when Josh is drumming on the pedestal, symbolic of how the fame lead them to where they would go. The sudden change of cloth from jumpsuit to yellow coat explains what they could achieve with the fame. But it all fades away in the end and Tyler comply with the cops, meaning that no matter what the fame promises, they wont sacrifice their arts. Hope this helsp

I'm coming late but I hope not to get lost. It is amazing how the rap part from Nico and the Niners has so much relation with this MV. "Rent a race horse and force a sponsor And start a concert, a complete diversion Start a mob and you can be quite certain We'll win but not everyone will get out" Same as what happens here, they play a concert in the prision, create a diversion for all to escape and they all do, all but Tyler. Dope.

"Rent a race horse and force a sponsor And start a concert, a complete diversion Start a mob and you can be quite certain We'll win but not everyone will get out" I already commented on the NatN video but please look at the Heathens video in combination with those lyrics from NatN. there is a theory that Tyler was thrown in prison when he was still in Dema before the Trench arc and ended up releasing everyone else but didn't managed to escape as well and the Heathens music video is telling this part of the story

Heathens is one of the best TOP songs (and they have a lot of them) and I like how flexible the meaning is. When I first heard the lyrics I assumed it's about the Suicide Squad. Why shouldn't it be? But then I found out that it's actually about the Clique. Tyler welcomes new people (those that found out about them with Blurryface) but tells them to be careful with the long time fans, that may have some problems with them. And at the end when he said "It looks like you might be one of us" he officially welcomes you to the Clique. Also, the music video makes me think Tyler is a meta human like some Suicide Squad members. Like he can manipulate his surrounding. (opening his and the other prisoner's cell) Or he has multiple personalities or something similar, breaking out while he isn't really aware of it and Josh being just in his imagination. Fun fact: Some of Josh's tattoos in Heathens are fake. He added more so that he doesn't feel as intimidated by the other prisoners. By the way it would be nice if you reacted to some Beyond the Video from some of their songs. They are hilarious. Tyler and Josh have a weird obsession with Will Smith.

I think the line about "We don't deal with outsiders very well, they say newcomers have a certain smell" is also a response from Tyler to a certain kind of fan that was especially prevalent after Blurryface blew up that were very defensive of new fans, saying that anyone who found TOP through Stressed Out of Ride wasn't a "real fan". That knee jerk response from people has definitely died down since then, but it was a big issue in the fandom for a while. I think this song helped dispel that idea since Tyler was talking to those fans. It also has a religious meaning given Tyler's christian background. To me it is him telling his current fans who know more of his more vocally religious days to be careful in how they spread that to new fans. "Wait for them to ask you who you know" is Tyler asking his fans to wait until people ask about his religious messages to share their christian faith, rather than getting preachy with people. He has never wanted to be a "Christian Musician" since that would pigeonhole him too much and would decrease the actual impact he can have to a wider audience, so he doesn't want him fans spreading that idea.

@TheThirdErnest The orange color is also pretty cool too because it's the color between red and yellow. That along with the fact that he has the black on his neck while in the yellow suit shows how he's trying to transition from blurryface into trench, but he's still stuck in dema (the prison) and needs Josh's help to break out again. Also, this song references Guns for Hands, and Nico and the Niners references this song. This guy has a really good series explaining all the connections: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoiQc59nnLSBnac You're still my favorite reaction channel though. Thanks for the quality breakdowns!

Great video per usual. Kitchen Sink was on Regional at Best which came out before they were signed by Fueled by Ramen. I don’t know the details but, I think there are legal issues with the distribution of some of those songs. Some of the songs on RAB were re-recorded and appear on Vessel which was the first album TOP did under FBR. Unfortunately Kitchen Sink wasn’t one of them. That might be why it’s being blocked.

"Tattoo worthy"... **looks at my Trees/Hello and yellow daisy tattoo on my right inner wrist** Yes, they are. There is a theory that since this song/video came out between Blurry Face and Trench, and was also released prior to Heavy Dirty Soul, that it rolls into the whole DEMA story. Perhaps this is where Tyler was when Nico picked him up in the car to drive him back to DEMA...

I can't tell if you even noticed, but in that end scene transition back to him in the jumpsuit, you can actually see it slowly transition from yellow back into the orange

Also, blurryface was red, this was orange(between red and yellow), it then switches to yellow with him playing in the stage, but in the end , when he is on the ground alone you see the suit changing colors from yellow back to orange, almost signifying like “not yet”. But it pointed to the yellow era of trench :D

I also saw in someone else's reaction to this song/video, they pointed out that he's wearing an orange jacket in this video, and orange is a combination of red (blurryface) and yellow (trench).

I love this video b/c it's like he's portrayed as a timid person and trying to cope with being in prison buuuut that's the trick he must be a psycho or killer cause he's in prison with everyone else. This is still🔥 in 2020!!

I gotta say that I really like how you always take your time to really figure out what each song has to say. That's dope. Heathens is a rather interesting track, especially sound wise. It just sounds differently. You really should react to Guns for Hands. I'd call it one of the TOP base songs. Uplifting sound delivering a rather important message.

You're right. The paint is there but it's faint. Even fainter than HeavyDirtySoul. Like he's almost or so close to ridding himself of Blurryface. A cool transition from Blurryface to Trench that no one noticed until after Trench came out. So cool. And I have three TØP tattoos.

You will love Addict With A Pen if you like songs that have a bit where the song drops out and then back in. Addict With A Pen is what actually got me into them.
