People often comment on the long shanked single curb bits. The fact is, most walkers need it. They have to be held firmly to prevent their falling into a disorganized pace like gait that is rough. If allowed to run long and loose, they will pace, and even canter in two beat fashion. I have experience with both Big Lick when I was much younger, and then later with registered ex-show Walkers, with no stacks. A true Running Walk is a four beat gait. They must be held to that standard.

Thank you for the explanation. I'm a western rider. So, tight reins are a no no. He doesn't look like it's bothering him though. Slight contact. She does give him breaks I noticed. I have TWH. One leg is shorter than the other and he has navicular. So I can't let him get going too much. He's a fabulous horse and my snuggle baby. I have 17 horses and out of all my geldings, and even some of my mares, he is the sweetest and most loving.

Bit is hurting his mouth, that's what is the matter with him. You don't need all that harshness to control such a placid breed. I don't get why they use it.

This is soooo much better to watch and for the horses than those a*holes who put 'packages' on their fore hooves to achieve the revolting 'big lick'
@PeruviansAZ7 жыл бұрын
Claire James it's funny cause they are wearing weighted shoes in this. light shod shoes weigh 2-4 pounds
@TwinPinesFarm7 жыл бұрын
Hi Kim. Hobo is wearing good old standard horseshoes that you would wear on the trail. Nothing special here.

@@PeruviansAZthere is a Huge difference to Big lick tho. No chemicals on the feet, no spikeys that hurt the hoove, just normal trail shoes

You know flat shod horses can be sored too right? And the chemicals have been effectively banned with hefty punishment for over 50 years

What a lot of people don't realize is that these horses are extremely comfortable to ride on long distances as long as you don't add 4 inches of lift. That is only done in big lick abuse shows. It's abominable. No reason for it it destroys horses.

I know this video is old, and I don't usually reply to old videos. But I had to say that Hobo was the most pleasure to watch. What do I look for in a TW? A head that is tucked naturally, in a relaxed manner, not hauled back creating a ewe neck. Also, a relaxed, naturally flowing gait, not straining to achieve a lift that looks strained. And, overall, just a relaxed horse appearing to take pleasure in what is asked of him. Yes, I saw all this in Hobo! A real joy to watch!!

Aw Hobo looks so happy compared to all the other horses in the class. And most TWH period. He isn’t moved in such a relaxed and not forced way, it makes me happy:) but one thing I’m really not a fan of is the tight hands with the long shank on the bit. That didn’t make me very happy. But hey, it was amazing overall:)

Sadly, YES, it is. There are less shows but they are still competing and still abusing horses. @@mentallyinsane445

Pls remove the weights and pads! 🤦🏼♀️ I hate this style of riding so much! If you look up videos of these horses and Thais natural movement it’s nothing like this. Their pain for your gain! All for fashion!

You can easily see there are no weights and pads…if you don’t know what a walker looks like that’s on you 🤡
@Marynicole8302 жыл бұрын
Tennessee walkers walk like this without pads. This isn’t big lick and they have only normal horseshoes on. I live in Tennessee and see this breed often. I never saw big lick though until KZbin and that is the most unnatural, ugly, painful looking thing I’ve ever seen. This gait is nothing like the weighted and sored gait. This is way more relaxed. The horse is in no pain and it doesn’t look as insane as big lick. This is how I grew up watching these horse walk.

I wouldn't pay fifty cents to view a show like this. I see much better horses on the trails.
@TwinPinesFarm8 жыл бұрын
Sorry that you feel this way. Hobo was our family pet and trail horse and you very well might have seen him on the trails somewhere. It was his first showing in a ring and he was a little nervous with all of the new sounds and sights. 40% of the time he was ridden by kids. He was a gentle giant @ 17h high and would park out to get shorter so the kids could mount. He was a fearless trail horse and was 100% naturally gaited and wore good old fashioned plain shoes. He would also jump and drive. Seeing him in person was certainly worth more then 50 cents. He is a classic example of the supreme versatility of the TWH breed. Pat
