Jeep Patriot Review - How Well Has It Held Up - Should You Buy a Used One?

#Mundaneman does a review of long-term ownership of a #Jeep #Patriot. Overall this 2010 Jeep has been extremely reliable for our type of daily driving.
The body and paint have held up well but keep in mind that for 9 years it has been garage kept in a heated space so that has probably helped in preserving the finish. It was undercoated when new and that may have contributed to preventing undercarriage rust.
The drive train has been solid with very little unplanned repairs. Basic oil changes with the usual wear items like brakes, tires etc. and the odd repair such as the thermostat housing were completed as necessary. While the 2.4 liter engine with the CVT transmission isn’t the most powerful for the size and weight of the Patriot it will certainly accelerate and maintain speed in most driving conditions. I wouldn’t plan on towing anything with it though.
I wouldn’t consider this an off road vehicle but the 4X4 option is certainly nice for snowy or muddy conditions but for daily driving I wouldn’t consider it a must have.
This Jeep being a well equipped North Edition does offer nice options like the sunroof, heated seats, 4X4, AC, upgraded factory stereo, block heater and all the power options in what I would consider a lower grade or entry level vehicle.
Interior finishes are full of plastic and lack some storage space however it is roomy and the fit and finish in 11 years has not degraded. No new rattles, the surfaces have not faded and overall it still looks like it did when we drove it off the dealership floor.
Again, I would not purchase another one as I’ve already had a Patriot but if you are looking for a reliable used vehicle and can find one with similar mileage and it has been well maintained I don’t think you would regret the purchase.

My Patriot is still going "strong". Nearly 200,000 KM's or 125,000 miles. Doesn't use oil and no leaks anywhere. I am slightly concerned about the transmission but it is only a gut feeling about its performance and nothing diagnosed. Rust is forming at the front of the rear quarter panel under the rear door though. For what I paid for it new and the minimal cost to maintain, it has been a good vehicle. It is ready for some serious suspension work though.

Had my 2011 for 10 years and just discovered a block heater. The cord was deep under the battery! I'll be a lot of people have them also and dont know. Don't really need it though unless I was going way north. I have the low range off road package and it really is a competent rock trail mountain climbing machine. The hill holder is great. Also the towing package gives a huge tranny cooler, which all the units needed. 143k miles and no issues. Change the cvt fluid every 40k or so miles.

I’ve had my 2010 North Edition since new purchased in April. I factory ordered it because I wanted the 5 sp manual and no dealer had one sitting in their lot. I also got the fwd version because this vehicle with a good set of snows is vey good for the Canadian winters w/o needing the 4x4. Otherwise it’s got the all the same options as yours expect the sunroof as there were many that we’re leaking because the geniuses at Chrysler installed corrugated drain lines down the A pillars which tended to back up with sediment until the water spilled onto the headliner and made its way out the front dome light. I’ve got 142k km and I must say it is in mint condition. Every spring and fall when doing my tire changeover I buy 2 cans of Fluid Film and basically go to town spraying any where I see potential rust forming and also in areas I know these Jeep’s are prone to rust. I spray between the wheel well liner and the wheel well arches , all the bottoms of the doors including the weepers in the doors and lift gate. I do the hood and all door hinges too and there is no rust to be found anywhere. The 5 spoke rims have never seen a single snow flake so they look brand new. I use only Mobile 1 synthetic from Canadian Tire when it’s on sale and then take it to Chrysler for the oil change where they add the oil filter, labour and disposal fee for about $34.00. Its uses not a drop of oil unlike many cars today with dgi engines and high pressure fuel lines. I detail it in the spring and fall with top notch stuff and that brilliant black with its green sparkles looks amazing when I’m done. I’ve always loved black cars but the are a bitch to keep clean. Very reliable so far but I did have the input shaft bearing go bad so I had it and the output bearing done at the same time. But you are right the weak point of this car is it’s suspension. I’m pretty handy around cars so I buy my replacement parts mainly from Rock Auto so suspension components are fairly inexpensive. The creaking suspension disappear but often returns and it’s a constant battle but I love my Patriot. I’ve piled so much stuff into that vehicle over the years and the fact the front passenger seat folds flat is an absolute genius design. I love the fact that it suits my needs space wise and yet I sometimes lose it in a parking lot because it’s hiding behind a larger suv. I’m going to keep this as long as I can. My 5 speed 1992 Eagle Talon went 16 years and 320,000 km before I sold it. Started burning oil out the back but the body was still mint. You take care of your cars and there is no reason they can’t last 300,000/400,000 km.

I’ve had two. A2008 and put 326000 miles on it before giving it to my grandson who sold it and it’s still running. I also have a 2016 with 165000 on it. I love them. Bought tools to change cvt fluid and filter on first one and it’s still running. Had to replace crank sensor on 2016 and 1 cv joint and 1 wheel bearing but other than that just normal maintenance. Oh I’m a retired mechanic so I do my own work on it. My son now drives it to school.

At 50k miles it’s a good car to pick up for under 15k, just make sure it has service records and brand new spark plugs if you haven’t already ended up grabbing one or a different car.

@@ninja2598 id bring a scan tool with you if Available, take it for a test drive and listen for bad bearings and bad ball joints. They tend to go around there. I just replaced mine a few months ago. Ask for service records. If everything checks out and your scanner doesn’t have any stored codes you should be set.

I was second owner on my 2012 Latitude. Transmission started overheating around 90-95k. This would happen on very warm summer days while driving for a few hours at highway speeds. Would have to pull over and let the car run in neutral to cycle the fluid without putting it in gear. Finally changed the fluid and the 2 filters (thanks youtube tutorials), which seemed to take care of the issue. No other problems with it other than small/normal things. Paint also held up extremely well. Was a great entry-level SUV with very nice features at the price point.

I have a 2016 Patriot with automatic headlights but no EVIC. Models with the evic have the ability to have the headlights activated automatically with the windshield wipers, which is law in many states. Is there a "code cheat" that exists to enable non-EVIC Patriots with automatic headlights to activate them with the windshield wipers?

We have a 2011 patriot latitude with a little over 68,000 miles on it. Just had the intake manifold replaced, that the only major thing we had done it, other than changing the battery twice. We like it. The onl complaint is, our 6’1” son with long legs has a hard time sitting in the back, lol.

Used to be a Toyota girl, but I would be hard-pressed to part with my Jeep. And, he came with all the bells and whistles. Even a touch screen stereo CD player(the screen comes down to insert CD). @@brandonv.969 He is still running like a new Jeep. The only thing I had to do recently, was have a new sway bar installed. That only cost me a grand total of $85, that was counting part and labor. I absolutely love my Jeep, I would not trade it for a brand new vehicle. I really believe, it's how the previous owner took care of the vehicle. If they kept up on maintenance and didn't dog it, it's probably a good vehicle to have. Just check it out really well before you purchase. And according to my research, CVT transmissions are far more reliable. But, when they go out, you must get it off the road immediately so you don't cause extreme damage.

Gas mileage on mine averages 10 litres per 100 KM or 23 MPG so fuel consumption is not too bad. To date I've only had to do general maintenance like oil changes, brakes and tires so that cost has been lower than average I think.

My 2008 has been nothing but problems. One after another and now the mechanics at the Jeep dealership cant even figure out what's wrong with it. The 2008s have a recall on the rear sub/K frame because it rusts completely through and basically your entire rear end will basically fall off the chassis.

I bought an 07 Compass 4x4 with the 2.4 and CVT with only 80k miles for super cheap and it has actually been really reliable for me. I had the alternator go out because I installed subs and the factory one couldn't handle it and then I had and issue with an aftermarket security system, but other than that, it hasn't had any issues at all. Does need sway bar links.

Ha just wait, you're about to find out just how horribly these Jeep were engineered. My 08 has had ENDLESS issues as soon as it hit 80-90 thousand miles. My advice to you is GET RID OF IT unless you've got 10 grand just lying around to make all the necessary repairs.

Got 14 4x4 manual transmission with 151k miles, I replaced the support bearings on the transmission. Was not hard just took time, the previous owner had these tiny lug nut tight to over 250 lbs crazy. I'm going to replace front hub assembly because bearings are pressed in its,cheap to just replace everything, iv also have new front axles and a new clutch although it's not necessary I'm just going to upgrade it, I'm also going to replace back axles and bearings as well.all these parts are very inexpensive just need mechanical abilities which I have it's a very nice vehicle I can't complain. The ac doesn't work but it's not really a problem, overall it's a decent quality ride

I believe the service manual states 60,000 miles/100,000 KM. Frankly, I've never changed mine and I'm almost afraid to now. I've heard that at some point the materials in the fluid are what's holding everything together. 😀 No slippage so far from mine.

I have a 2014 Patriot I bought brand new. My first tow was the throttle body getting stuck, and a rear hub failed recently that set off the ABS alarms, eventually I had to pull over. If your going to buy one... avoid the CVT like the plague. Same goes for most CVTs of the era, im not just picking on the Patriot. The only ones I would buy used are the ones with the Automatic transmission. The automatic Tranny was originally designed for the KIA sedona, a much heavier vehicle. Unfortunately they only made them with the auto transmission towards the end, and it was optional..... so they are in the minority.

They didn't "only make them automatics at the end." Even in its last model year, you could get the Patriot with either a 5 or 6 speed manual, a 6 speed auto, or a CVT. If you're going to get one, the 5 speed manual T355 is the most reliable. It was designed by Mercedes-Benz. The 6 speed manual is a Fiat-Chrysler design and has a lot of problems.

I would say hard no. Rare to see them with that high if miles. If moneys tight I’d recommend an older Toyota. They are known to be reliable with that high of miles but a patriot is a far more of a risk at that mileage

If it's an automatic, make sure it's had the transmission fluid changed every 40 or 50k miles. If not, set aside another 2 grand for a new transmission. Otherwise, just get one with the 5 speed manual.

240 kph, which is about 150 mph. Also, if yours doesn't have the 4WD transfer bar switch in the console, then you don't have 4WD, you have FWD.

A CVT does NOT have a “wider range of gears” it has a single gear that changes ratio depending on the throttle body position. Please do not speak on things you have 0 idea about 😭. Anyone looking for a patriot never get below a 2015, and make sure it has the 6 speed Hyundai automatic or a 5 speed manual transmission. The CVT in the patriot is a Nissan/Jatco CVT and is VERY VERY prone to failure before even 75k miles. Buyers beware

@@gummo3873 gummo is completely right. Any patriot before 2014 is guaranteed to end up on the side of the road

If you want to make patriot ride like luxary replace the front spring with corola spring it will lower the ride by 2inchs but it will cancel out some bump on the road. If you add 400lb weight to the center of the car I'll surprised you.

I'm not sure why all of the comments on this video are positive ones, but the 2008 Jeep Patriot I own has had nothing but MAJOR problem after major problem, all of which I fixed until the electrical system went and even highly experienced mechanics at the dealership can't seem to figure out wth is wrong with it. ⚠ WARNING ⚠ DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE VEHICLES USED WITH OVER 50,000 MILES ON IT, YOU WILL REGRET IT. 🤯🤦😤😡😠🤬

This person comment aligns with the opinions of many credible mechanics. I am not nor was an owner of a Patriot, however, I know the CVT is horrible. And their are many negative comments about it. Obviously some people will get a winner like this guy.
