Major Oil Leak | Ram 1500 Oil Leak | Catastrophe Avoided?

#MundaneMan discovered a puddle of oil under the RAM 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi. After a long trip, I noticed oil all over the underside of the engine. After further investigation I found that oil was leaking around the oil filter. After a 3,000 KM journey this could have been disastrous if the filter had spun off and the oil spilled out while cruising down the highway.
If you see oil underneath your vehicle or smell burning oil from the engine bay start checking for leaks. Whether you do your own work or have a service technician do it, always look for dripping fluids.

@@Cameronguitar444 I've some good news that might help you too. I thought I had a rear main leaking. Needed an oil change pretty bad. Wasn't ready to deal with the rear main. Had a new windage shield (pan gasket). When I removed the lower bell housing plate I noticed a corner bolt was missing from the pan.. Turn out it was broken off. I started thinking how to extract it. Turns out it was already drilled but the bolt was still there. Couldn't remove it either. I tried for a couple hours. (didn't have an easy out to fit). But I did have a sheet metal screw I cut with my dremel tool like a "self tapping bolt". Had to make it the right length so when it got too tight in the hole, the shoulder of the screw made contact with the pan. Waaahla. oil leak fixed~! I was spending as much on oil as I was gas. Turns out the oil pan had permatex on the corner of the pan where the screw was missing.

@@andybilakshow260 Nice!! Yeah I think it may be my main rear seal because its dumping oil now. I had rebuilt the engine and the only seal that didn't come with the kit was the rear and I skipped it at that time would this time would come. I need new aluminum heads too... Dont ever overheat a 4.7

@@Cameronguitar444 I'm in afternoon traffic. A freeze plug sprung a leak. Run completely out of water. Ove heated at a stop light. Died. Went to the house on the corner & filled a poweraide bottle like 1000 times as traffic had to go around me. Finally got it running & back home. Long story short, I lost 75% compression in #1 cylinder. Plus slight coolant in my oil. Not on the stick only on the cap. Put new head gasket on left bank. Attempted to regrind intake & exhaust valves. Only gained 20# from 40-60. So I need new heads as well~! The kit I got came with more seal than you can count (or at least I can count) including rear main. "partsology" I like them so far.

@@andybilakshow260 Wow thats stressful in traffic man!! Yeah I put new headgaskets on the v8 and it worked I took them to this old guy to have them resurfaced before I put em on it worked but the aluminum heads have a knock. The engine runs great but the tapping sound drives me nuts and I'm ocd about it im sure people think the engines about to crap out on me but its got 30000 since the rebuild and its got 240000 total

Had this issue off and on (it's on again) in my 2016 1500 for 3-4 years now. Oil filters are tight and changed done by the dealer. They have checked the housing, and said it's OK. Just noticed a couple spots on the driveway again, and yep, the filter is wet. Been 6 months (but only 3000 miles) since my last change. I honestly think the gaskets on these Mopar filters are crap, and they allow some leakage as they age. Mine is nothing like yours though - you have a puddle, yikes. Mine (so far, knock wood) spots the driveway.

I have seen this problem many times, but was not due to operator error. It is due to increased oil pressure.

Shouldn't one have checked the oil level before running the engine again? You know, just to be safe.

I just gave my truck for general inspection and they’ve kept the truck. They say there is a massive oil leak from the truck 😢

My 02 does this,dodge put a drip tray right under the oil filter! Why? They must have known there's an issue with this ! A dirty plugged oil filter would increase back pressure and force oil out of the seals...! maybe!! Yours is a newer ram,so this is an ongoing issue with the dodge ram obviously! Also,our products "made in China" crappy aftermarket filters with low grade rubber seals could also contribute to this problem! So,it's not your fault! Also,they want you to put white grease on the black rubber seal! Use an oil filter wrench!😮

Did you find out where the leak was coming from? I have the same issue and it's dripping from the lowest part of the bell housing where the transmission is bolted on. It's definitely engine oil, not transmission fluid. I'm thinking one of the seals was improperly installed.

@@watcherwatchmen7785 Drips will migrate by gravity or airstream so such a drip could come from oil far away. Some seals like rear main seals take time to fully seat in if they are brand new. Maybe clean up as much as possible and keep a daily eye on it to see if you can find the origin. Good luck.

I figured out where the oil leak was coming from on mine. I dropped the oil pan and found gouges from 2 screwdrivers on the aluminum rear main oil seal housing where it connects to the pan. Bubba the mechanic must have gotten to it before me. I sanded down the raised burrs and used silicone to seal it. Now it's just a couple drips making it thru instead of pissing oil like before. I used a new gasket. To replace the main rear seal will involve removing the transmission, and I don't have the time or energy for that right now.

just had my 2022 ram classic in the shop for the same reason dealer tried telling me it was the oil change place didn't tighten the filter this was after 7000 kms of my last oilchange

Brake cleaner is corrosive, horrible idea

Brake cleaner is used for cleaning oil off steel, virtually every mechanic uses this technique.
