I love how Mina can say what she feels now. Before she won't say anything but now she is opening up. This is the example, before she does not want to stop calling Jeong unnie but only reasons out it's a habit but now she can honestly say that she wishes to have someone older than her, an unnie. Moreover, Jeong is very understanding, it's like she knows what the members really feel. Uwuuuuu

In the Philippines, we also use the Korean age addressing system where even a day or month older we call them "Ate"(Unnie) no matter what. It is a culture or a habit we developed even strangers we call them Unni regardless of age to insist or express respect towards strangers.

But when we're talking to cousins or relatives some use who's parents are much older some call it "panganay sa dugo" literally translate to "older by blood" that's why some people much older than you can call you 'ate' or 'kuya' if your parent is much more older than them
@geem31663 жыл бұрын
Not all Filipino stick with that, if the age gap between us is big (like 3 years and above, that's where the honorifics starts, but sometimes it depends on the relationship or bond they have,) there are times that even the age gap is 5 years, if you're comfortable with that person and seeing him/her as friend/same age, there's no honorifics involved.. right? Except if it's your siblings.. Now if the age gap is just 2 years and below, i can say only a small percentage of Filipino population uses honorifics woth that age gap.. im talking about modern day btw Especially most filipinos doesn't follow family planning 😝🤣🤣

Simply put, Mina likes to be pampered and cared for as she has always been the youngest of the groups she has been in. MoSa is the same age as her in both Korea and Japan so she cannot be treated as the youngest, Momo has said several times that Mina seems more unnie than her when MoSaMi is together because she is attentive and takes great care of her. momo. The same goes for ChaeDaTzu being the minors she has to take care of them. Jihyo is the same age that she can't be her unnie either. Only Jeongyeon and Nayeon are left to call as Unnie. Mina has always shown the desire to be the maknen in two times when asked which member wants to switch roles, she always chooses tzuyu for being the maknen, even though Nayeon calls her unnie because of the difference, she does not fulfill her wishes why Nayeon She treats her in the same way as MoSaJiDa even though dahyun belongs to the maknen line Dahyun is generally not cared for since ChaTzu are the young ones. It is Jeongyeon who fulfills her wishes to be cared for and pampered, she also fulfills her wish to be treated as the makne within the group so Mina will not stop calling anie Jeongyeon, even though she is the same age as in Korea

@@MesmerizingMina Thank you very much for understanding my comment, English is not my first language and I sometimes get confused when I write. I highlight that because it is what I have noticed in JeongMi, Mina likes to be taken care of and jeongyeon is the type to take care of people and be empathetic. She also complements herself in what the other lacks. Mina can be a bit childish and playful to subtly show her manly side with jeongyeon. While jeongyeon I can show her joker side of her, cute and feminine of her with Mina. That's what makes the ship charming.

Without the cultural context, it looks funny seeing Jeongyeon announcing that she’s finally friends with Mina. 😁 I’m a relatively new fan of Twice, and I was introduced to Korean honourifics through SNSD. Since everyone in SNSD is technically Korean, the honourifics are straight forward for the most part. With Twice, we’re dealing with members of multiple ethnicities/nationalities so it’s fascinating to see how they navigate around that. I think your video does a good job explaining this. 👍🏽

I believe at first it was really just for formality. But over time, I think it became some sort of endearment. Mina couldn't just take out the "unnie" anymore because I think it has become the very way she sweetly and comfortably say and call Jeongyeon's name.

I think Mina calling Jeongyeon an unnie now is like an endearment/force of habit because they're close/'friends' enough for JY to let MN call her 'yah' (a very informal term for friends of the same age/close friends), while Nayeon doesn't let Momo do the same (birthday vlive) even though those two are really close, friendship-wise.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to "respect" plus force of habit. Mina's actions and intentions are deeply rooted from her care, love, affection and administration for Jeongyeon. May it be platonic or romantic, we will never know. It may even be a cross-over of both which is just as complicated as the 96 & 97 line situation. Anyway, Love is indeed very complicated, so let's stop trying to give clarity to it. What's important is that we can feel and see it present in the two of them since the start. 😉
@akabane_P3 жыл бұрын
In Korean, 'Friend' also means 'be the same age' Like, "Are you 20 yrs old? Me too! So we're friends!"(even if it's the first time they've ever met!) If the age is not same, no matter how friendly they are to each other, we don't count this relation as "friends" But nowadays, people in different ages can also be thought as friends but it rarely happens
@MesmerizingMina3 жыл бұрын
But do people talk informally to their “friends” who are older than them??
@akabane_P3 жыл бұрын
@@MesmerizingMina we can talk informally to older hyung, oppa, nuna, unnie But to call the relationship "friends", the elder one must admit it first because "friend" implies the meaning of "same age" so strongly e.g) A "Oh, you guys are really close and friendly to each other, you must be friends." B "You know, we're not friends, we're just hyung-dongsaeng(elder male-younger male) relationship. We're not the same age."(but in the greater common context, they're friends. Only in Korean doesn't it make sense.) or B "Yes, we're friends beyond the wall of ages."
@akabane_P3 жыл бұрын
To understand it easy, think about the relationships of Twice. Maknaes talk informally to unnies, and they are really intimate friends to each other. They're friends without doubt in every country but in Korea it doesn't work. Dahyun would not think Jihyo as a friend, vice versa, but Jihyo would think Jeongyeon as a friend, only because of the age, no matter how close they are. It's quite complicated lol
@akabane_P3 жыл бұрын
So, the concept of 'friends' does exist, indeed. But 친구(chingu, literally means friends) is used especially in the relationship where they are the same age.

On many public occasions or shows, no. Jihyo calls JeongMoSa with their names. Nayeon is the only one Jihyo calls "unnie".
@GraceDA324 Жыл бұрын
Also, in formal situation, without calling "unnie", usually Jihyo address everyone (except Nayeon) by adding "-ssi" after their names: Momo-ssi, Sana-ssi, Mina-ssi, Dahyun-ssi, Chaeyoung-ssi, Tzuyu-ssi. The prefix -ssi is neutral and used in formal situation, and can be used for strangers who seem the same age for you or below your age. While for Nayeon, Jihyo still calls her Nayeon-unnie, whether in formal or informal situations.
@deliara44192 жыл бұрын
Why when Mina called JY "Unnie" in protest. Meanwhile, JY called Nayeon "Unnie" too but no one protested. It's weird in my opinion. Is there a problem if we call older people "unnie"? Is it just a protest that each does not like the call. In my opinion, 1 member is only 1 year apart, it's still normal to be friends. Being called brother will look awkward and that's what makes sometimes the members can't give each other's opinion. And only the old can argue, I don't think that's good, The point is that maturity cannot be measured by age. I think the younger TWICE members are more mature in their minds than the older ones I think it's only natural. The essence of the members is the cohesiveness of a team.
@MesmerizingMina2 жыл бұрын
It's a korean culture that you call someone older than you by unnie, older as in by year. Nayeon is born in 1995, 2nd oldest Jeongyeon is born in 1996, so naturally everyone has to call Nayeon unnie too. Nothing to do with being mature or not. They still treat each other like friends by not speaking formally.

Can this go for blackpink as well like for example Jennie doesn’t have to call jisoo since she is a early line of 96 and rosé and Lisa doesn’t have to call Jennie unnie because they’re both early liners of 97
@MesmerizingMina3 жыл бұрын
Could be. But from what I had research, jisoo is early 95, Jennie early 96, rose early 97, Lisa semi early 97. So actually Jennie would still need to call jisoo unnie since jisoo are friends with 94. And Lisa and rose would have to call Jennie unnie too since jennie are friends with 95. I think, deep down it is because of all these things: 1) Mina is Japanese. Honorifics are very important there. It is no wonder why, when people get close in Japan, it is very embarrassing that they start addressing each other without honorifics or a title. You can easily see this in anime/manga too. 2) Korea also uses some kinds of honorifics/titles to address people out of respect. 3) Mina is a very respectful person, thus she tries to always be mindful of her manners (She embodies elegance duh!) so she respects as much as she can, laws and rules in general. (Think of when she has to act... she always stays true to the character she is given). Given that she is a foreigner, she does even more efforts to respect Korea's culture. 4) Jeongyeon is the one person she HAS to address as unnie if she had to follow the Korean respect rules. Naturally, Mina started calling her unnie. And thus, as she stated in the video, it is too difficult after that to change her way to address Jeongyeon. Basically, Mina is an anime/manga character who is still way too embarrassed 😳
