@liv974973 ай бұрын
I think your summary at the end is perfect - Twilight is pretty bad, but it's so good. Stephenie Meyer is a pretty average writer overall but she can write really good action scenes, those are always the highlights of the books for me. And just to clarify a couple things: - the reason the Alice reveal does not matter at all is because S. Meyer initially didn't intend for it to be a whole series. Bella and Edward were going to get married straight after Twilight and the events of New Moon and Eclipse would never have happened. The epilogue got cut from Twilight and eventually became Breaking Dawn (or the initial part of it). So the tidbit about Alice is just a nice little bow to quickly solve the mystery of her vampire transformation. - I promise you the "Edward is a toxic boyfriend" discourse was analyzed to hell and back. Opinions still vary but I personally think it's important to remember that he's a literal monster. That's part of the allure. You're not supposed to compare him to any other teenage heartthrobs, but to characters like Dracula, or the Creature from the Black Lagoon, or even the Phantom (of the Opera) - Third and last, don't be afraid to go ham on the criticism but remember that yeah, we know. Nobody hates twilight more than twilight fans lol.

Because Twilight was my obsession as a teenager and now my guilty pleasure, I feel compelled to share a few thoughts. Edward is strange, nothing new there, but he’s portrayed as a vampire emotionally frozen in time, who changes permanently after meeting Bella. When vampires experience such intense emotions, their nature shifts, as explained more deeply in Midnight Sun and later books. Bella has qualities and a personality, but these don’t come through as much from her pov. Her maturity stems from caring for her mother, which makes her a suitable match for a 104 year old vampire who is not so emotionally mature. They’re learning together. Edward has to overcome jealousy and his overprotective nature, battling his inner demons, while Bella finds her place in a world where she never felt she belonged. Edward's world provides a space where she can truly be herself. Despite the occasional problematic aspects of their relationship, I appreciate how they grow together, helping each other overcome insecurities. Their relationship is consuming, intense, and codependent, yet many of us secretly dream of an all-consuming love and a partner who would love us unconditionally. Is it possible in real life? Is it healthy? These questions make us wonder and reach for that kind of love-one that feels beyond reality, transcending life and death. I love Twilight for its flaws, raw honesty, and weirdness, all set in a tragically romantic world. It makes you think about having a partner who would fight through hell just to be with you and a love so strong you’d risk everything for it. This is a veeeery long comment:) but there’s more to say about Twilight. I’ll save it for the next video. I just wanted to say that your videos are funny and comforting, and they’ve brought me back to a universe that helped my teenage self overcome insecurities and the feeling of not belonging. Thank you.

@janefan12163 ай бұрын
I loved your comment. I had a strong emotional connection to this book when it came out, bc from 16-19 I fell in love with my first love. This book took me right back, and captured that intensity perfectly. Then, when they break up in book 2, I SOBBED, because the gut-punch of the pages where time passes, peoole have made fun of that, but that is EXACTLY what it was like, and I thought Stephanie Meyers conveyed that brilliantly. I think there's a lot of depth that gets missed bc people get stuck on the age gap I really like how you put it, that they grow together. Bella was mature for her years, much more so than the kids her age. You can see it in how she never really fits in with the other kids. They're more hyper, and she's very grounded, and in her head. That's not to say she's made a good judgment call in dating someone who sees you as food. But, unlike dating someone like Dahmer, Edward has proved time and again his first (and pretty much only) priority is keeping her safe. That counts for a lot with her. She weighs the pros and cons and makes a somewhat logical decision. I think Jacob would have been a better fit for her, and I am now solidly Team Jacob bc Edward was too controlling, and the whole having to die to stay together thing (and the Volturi thing) but, she'd already given her heart to Edward at that point. Poor Jacob.

I thought of Edward when I was reading ACOTAR, and I thought maybe I was just not young enough to be really swept away by the book the way others seem to be. 😄 I think the difference is that Edward gives reasons when he is controlling. Tamlin never gives a reason, and part of that is to keep the mystery going, but I think Tampon is worse. And I like Bella FAR better than Feyre. I found Feyre insufferable. Bella's choices make sense when your 17 and head over heels in love -- and with a vampire who, according to the book and lore, is infinitely more attractive than humans. So, poor thing didn't stand a chance, really. 😂

I think the theory in why it is okay edward is 100+ is that twilight vampires seems to be emotionally/mentally locked at the age they were when they died hence why child vampires with no impulse control are dangerous and not allowed. And why Carlisle and Esme who turned as adults are more mature than the ‘kids’

“This really nails teen angst” honestly I’m pretty sure that explains 90% of the weirdness and popularity of this series. Also yes many teenage girls are, like Bella, from family systems where Edward’s behavior and declarations would be green flags instead of the clearly red flags they are. Stalking and obsession are seen as unconditional affection, lust/hunger as a replacement for self-confidence and a healthy body image, controlling behavior as someone taking care of you (probably especially attractive to a girl with an absent father and a mother who parentified her)

I reread it as an adult as well and it's so weird and toxic relationship-wise (I still love the books though), but I have to admit that time also taught me that there are far worse books with toxic relationships being written every year. I think I can count the amount of 'healthy book relationships' on one hand. So many books I read give me the ick. So I still give this the benefit of the doubt with creepiness. Also, one other ick that I can't stand is: WHY IS THE TIMELINE SO SHORT! Books are sometimes just a month or a few months. Like what? Why not make it years. I find that much more believable. But no book and movie characters always have to fall head over heels for each other after a week. Relax. Take some time. Keep up the good work! Can't wait for the other video's

It wasn't hard since Stephanie Meyer was also a Lit major and the books are rife with allusions to 18th and 19th century literature. Our professor always knew the class was over when one of us would make the connection. At the end of the semester we all signed a copy of Twilight at different points in the novel. As she read it she posted updates for us and we had a movie marathon months later. 🤣 P.S. Our professor drank an entire bottle of wine herself during the first movie. It was one of the best classes ever!

I remember reading this series as a teen/early 20s, and I was always Team Jacob bc Edward is toxic af. At least Jacob had the excuse of being a 15 year old boy with teen boy hormones that due to the werewolf curse gives him constant teen boy PMS. He’ll grow out of it. Edward will always be toxic.

Side note… the film cast for Charlie is top notch and I’ll never be able to see anyone else in my head

Also, I can confirm, bring a 17 year old girl is weird and confusing and the heart wants what it wants, okay? 😅

"Vampires are cooler, obviously. Fuck werewolves." WOAH THERE, buddy, what did the werewolves ever do to you?

I’m barely a minute in and I hadn’t put two and two together. But in Eden there are two trees one was the tree of good and evil and the other is the tree of life, if you eat from that fruit you will live forever.

Not sure if it would fit the series, but there is a 2010 movie called Vampires Suck that is an extremely blatant parody of the first twilight movie like essentially shot for shot if I remember correctly lol. My friends and I found it extremely entertaining at 12 years old and I’m curious how badly it stands up today 😂

"I officially met Jacob, and he's not gonna be a groomer, is he?" This is the FUNNIEST thing
