TWI is highly experienced in the development and application of fitness-for-service (FFS) techniques, particularly for the avoidance of brittle and ductile fracture. TWI can help solve problems that may arise throughout the lifecycle of a component, from design to decommissioning and by so doing risks and costs are minimised.
TWI also plays an active role in developing and maintaining codes, standards and procedures in the area of fracture mechanics testing and structural integrity assessment.

What a great video - explains a complex subject very clearly and provides a simple explanation why very ductile materials can fail in a brittle manner

Great study facts used in Append. A of API 1104 Britttle fracture starts at a stress riser (a notch). The resistance of a material to fracture is it's fracture toughness (quantified by the Charpy Test). Charpy Test tells us the energy required to break a specimen.Temperature is crucial- in ferritic materials, usually in low temperatures. The range of temperature where the fracture changes from brittle to ductile- transition region. In ductile region absorbs a high degree of energy. Brittle fracture more likely to occur in thick sections subjected to high rates of deformation. Full sections subjected to lower rates of loading can use another test method, the Crack tip opening displacement (CTOD). In CTOD testing, the sample has small notch and also a small crack. The size of the opening is also a measure of fracture ductility. Separation is measured with a "clip gauge". The initial crack length as well as the fracture faces.

Well done video. I plan on showing this in welding, metallurgy and mechanical design classes. I will check out other TWI videos later.

A great video for understanding materials, is it possible for me to use this video in NDT courses without getting in trouble caused by restrictions?

What is the liquid used for the experiment of the brittle fracture and what is the type of the steel that you used ?

At minute 3:18 ''Fracture toughness which can be quantified by charpy test'' I think this definition is not true!
