Twin or Single Axle Caravan. I'll explain our reasons for replacing our single axle with a twin axle caravan. Caravan Tips Twin Axle or Single Axle?
We've owned two single axle caravans, one Knaus and a Sterling Eccles. We loved the Eccles but when we changed the tow car, to something which should have been a good tow car, weird things happened.
We didn't really agonise too much over the cost difference from single to a twin, as the twin had the exact layout we wanted.
The £2,300 question is....Do we regret getting a twin axle?

Good comparison Graham we only had one single axle van for about a year back some 16 years ago it was a wobble box! We only have twin axles now and weighing in at 2000kg I don't feel a thing cheers paul.

Hi we love our twin with longer lounge and island bed and full bathroom. We have motor movers on all 4 wheels fitted which makes manoeuvring very easy, much better turning circle. Towing in wind the other week there was no movement, great stability when towing.

Great vlog Graham, are you at my storage 😂🌧🌧 Lots of arguments for and against the twin, we did look at them initially but the extra cost of movers, servicing, tyres etc put us off. I can definitely see the advantages regarding more space and towing stability. Glad you think you made the right decision, you buy what works for you. Cheers Martin 🙂

Makes more sense buying second-hand, as the price difference is a lot smaller, and in any event, as there's only two of us and a Husky, so whilst not needing the space, we prefer the space, only downside is we'll need to spend more on an AWD motor mover, and that will affect payload a bit, but not significantly. Tyres & servicing, well its not that much over 7 years, and we prefer the more stable towing anyway. So yeah, our first caravan is a 2008 twin axle, and we love it.

Thanks for sharing this comparison. We are still on our first caravan which is a single. Looking at the weights and the sort of car we have and will probably be getting in the future we will probably stick to a single axel. But as they say. Never say Never 😀😀. Thanks Ian & Sonja

Hi Graham I am researching for the next caravan at the moment just gone through Single\Twin now we’re looking at standard width or 8’ thank god not looking at height as well as you said it’s down to individual requirements also sorted the short list to MTPLM as we don’t want to change the car thanks for video Dave

Hi Graham, I think the choice is sometimes dictated by where you store it. Due to space, you could be restricted to certain dimensions if stored at home. Other than that, I suspect a twin axle gives you max space, storage and more luxuries. Thanks for an interesting video. Rob

Twin axles are easier to reverse than singles as they don't jack knife. There is not much cost difference in tyres as twin axles ride on normal car tyres vs single axles riding on heavy duty van tyres. We downsized back to a single and hated it. Soon went back to a twin as missed the extra space.

Hi Graham nice vlog single axle for me being a cl user and rarely using large sites try to keep the van as compact as I can.its sometimes a struggle to get my Valencia in to some places wouldn't want to go bigger but I can see the attraction of a larger van thanks.

I would buy the twin axle all day long. The only thing I worry about is will it go up the side of our house to where our caravan is stored now? Other than that I would like the twin and in our case that would be the Barcelona. Cheers Graham.... Ian

Great video, interesting comparisons there mate. When you are away in it it’s the things like the bigger seats that matter. I would have thought the service would be more than that too which is a plus. Given you don’t go through tyres every year, a twin axle starts to make sense if you can justify the additional cost 👍🏻

The powrtouch Awd movers can turn a twin axle almost on the spot but it will drag the wheels and rip up the grass so you won’t be popular on sites. Some will also say there are some single axles as long as twins like the Adria’s but they are talking about total length, the body length where it matters isn’t the same size as a twin axle. our dealer charges £20 more to service a twin axle so that’s not worth worrying about, you obviously have two extra tyres to replace but that’s every 5 years which again not worth worrying about. Our storage is £50 more as we require a bigger storage pitch so there is more costs to having a twin but you do then get extra space that you just don’t get in a single axle and there’s layouts you can get which are just not possible is a single axle. I wouldn’t discount a single axle if it was the right van but I don’t regret having a twin axle.

Caravan Vlogger no, they still make it G. We love it , going away for Christmas & new year this year , hope the weather isn’t too bad. I was stunned that your payload is only 5kg more than mine. Just about every time a see a twin turn up on site they bring everything with them apart from the kitchen sink . Swift is just as bad with a user payload of 165kg even on the extra wide vans.

Graham definitely down to personal choice. I have a twin axle Swift, how did we arrive at our choice? Requirements at that time End bathroom Fixed bed (it’s French in our model) Twin beds in front for two growing teenagers (Son and daughter) So when we visited the much missed Harrington’s the twin was the only option. Twin not better than single, except for items you covered and vice versa. Considering a twin you must be able to reverse with some precision, I don’t have a mover. Ours is now a big two berth and I love it. 10yrs old now and don’t want to change hope it keeps going. Enjoyed the vid.

Thanks for watching Colin. I agree with reversing comment. In France last year I had to reverse on pitches and it was ok. A few were really tight and a mover would have helped but ours broke. We love have the space with just the 2 of us. Kids are way too old for caravanning now 😂

@@CaravanVlogger yes the irony is we only need them in the storage yard most pitches we have easily managed to reverse onto. Graham I wondered about levelling twin axles as this can be more difficult? Wondered how you do it or if you have a lock n level? Thanks James

jampot20000 I think so yes. Mostly we’re on flat pitches. Not really needed to level it. I have a couple of “ramps”. I don’t have lock n level thought about it a lot though.
