These are generational artists...their families have been studying music for centuries. This song was written almost 700+ years ago by Amir Khusrow for his spiritual master Nizamuddin Auliya. Approximately 40 years ago a dargah in Pakistan echoed with the sound of this traditional qawwali performed in an epic collaboration by the MAESTROS, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Rahat's uncle and Ghulam Farid Sabri - Amjad's father. This was recorded before Amjad's tragic killing and released after his death and as a coke studio performance , it was one of those rare performance which was recorded in first take and was Amjad's first and last performance in coke studio.

This was not the actual performance IIRC. At least, it wasn't meant to be. This was supposed to just be rehearsal. During the instrumentalists' briefing, the director decided to skip the rehearsal altogether, start recording and just go for it since the angles, audio, and lighting were already all set up. And it's a miracle he did, because this was the last performance Amjadji ever sang, and the first (and last) the two families' heirs ever sung together.

@@TahirJamil74 the word "urdu" didn't find mention till 18th century till the reign of aurangzeb. The precursor to urdu,namely hindavi, hindustani or khariboli, did have many turkish, arabic and Persian loan words, but the heaviest influx of words, codification, dictionary all happened during aurangzeb's reign. Urdu is a indo-aryan language , which has drawn almost exclusively on sanskrit for its pholonogy, grammar and syntax. When amir khusro was singing this song, no one knew of a language called urdu. It could have gone anyway.. sanskritzation of the hindustani language resulted in hindi, arabization/muslimization of hindustani finally resulted in urdu.. so yes, sometimes, languages are created in a short period of time.. thin air is a bit of an exaggeration, but yes.

@fahmidsarwar17213 жыл бұрын
3:36 this song/composition is about the arrival of the lover's beloved (the mehboob-e-ilahi) at the lover's house. it is about anticipation and the emotions of a lover waiting for their beloved's arrival. it is, intentionally, meant to be ambiguous, because that is the sufi philosophy. so we do not truly know if it is physical or just a metaphorical arrival. that fact is not significant, because sufism is about finding the hidden meaning in creation and the word of God, and the reconciliation of both aspects t find the ultimate truth which is supposed to be unitary.

This genre of music is called Qawali which is related to religious devotional music. These lyrics were written by Persian Sufi poet Amir Khusrow who was inspired by the teachings of sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya. Most of the Sufi poetry survived through many centuries because of oral traditions. These Sufi saints were revered a lot in Indian region not only by Muslims but by other religions also and their poetries were sung in Qawalis at the Sufi shrines before the advent of technology and tv. After TV these Qawalis were started to promote on TV channels and Radio and got popularity internationally. Qawalis and other Sufi genres are not performed by every singer but by special singers mainly called Qawals who specialize in this kind of singing.Qawalis are generally performed by generational artists who trained by their family members and teachers from the early childhood and should be expert in Indian classical singing. Qawalis are usually very long and need lot of energy to perform, their purpose is to put people into trance and connect them emotionally to God or religion. These Qawalis are performed into group in which lead singer sings and then chorus follows and claps. Sufi poetry is mostly about praise of God, prophets of God and Sufi saints and spirituality. Many Sufi saints talk about the love of God in disguise. So the concept of “ beloved” could be referred to God or spiritual master. As all Sufi saints consider the world as an illusion. And the real purpose is the success in afterlife which is achieved by pleasing God.
