I used to interpret this as "look for a present to give yourself" like a donut or new shoes, but I think it's really more of "don't reject the presents that life presents you with." Like feeling sleepy and having a nap, accepting a cup of coffee when offered, or buy something on a whim. Don't go out looking for them but appreciate the things that life puts in your path.

Of course, Lynch, the set and costume designer, all had a fetish for the post-WWII boom. I think it's something he makes a point of to construct, deconstruct and reconstruct in every single project of his. Twin Peaks season 1 and 2 both posit this. Fire Walk with Me deconstructs it, and The Return puts it on it's head.

The real mystery of Twin peaks is how the coffee pot ended up back on the burner for Shelly to pour after Hank left it sitting on the counter.

I need to re-watch it, great TV show with great memorable characters. Also many minor details stayed unnoticed, like that cup of coffee

When I saw the ending of season one, I gave up the show and the director. I just found out the end of season two and the end of the reboot. Never seeing this show again was a great call.
