How careful do you need to be with the jewelry? Are pearls easily damaged?

They're really soft and scratch easily. Also, they should be taken off if you're going to be applying perfume or lotion. The color will change if you don't.

I wouldn't say they scratch "easily" but they can be scratched as opposed to a gem or metal band. Just don't whack it on things and you should be good as far as dings or nicks go. Absolutely protect it from products though, for sure. Also, take it out and polish it every so often if you end up storing it for extended periods of time; they can yellow with age but the oils in our hands help to prevent it.
