Twins Pinnacle is arguably the most frequented dive spot on Koh Tao, ideal for scuba divers of all levels due to its rich marine life and diverse coral reefs. It’s particularly suited for conducting a range of PADI training courses, making it a favorite among recreational divers.
The site features three main pinnacles: two large boulder formations covered in corals, and a smaller, deeper cluster of rocks to the west. The origin of the name "Twins" is uncertain, but it could be from the two main underwater rock formations or the two peaks of Koh Nang Yuan island that overlook the site.
Twins Pinnacle's popularity is also due to its location, providing shelter to divers even during monsoon weather, ensuring a thriving marine environment year-round. The site is home to a variety of macro marine life including Nudibranchs, Pipefish, different types of Shrimp, Cowfish, and Wart Slugs.
Exploring Twins Pinnacle, you’ll encounter favorites like Weible’s Butterflyfish swimming in pairs, alongside a plethora of Angel fish and Coral fish. The dive site is easy to navigate, with the three peaks aligned along an east-west axis.
A recommended dive plan starts with the smaller, deeper pinnacle where you might spot a large adult Longface Emperor fish. Look closely in the rock crevices for Pipefish and Yellow Boxfish, then move east to the middle pinnacle.
The middle peak offers numerous attractions, including an archway on the north side suitable for divers confident in their buoyancy. If buoyancy control is a concern, you might be better off heading to Buoyancy World, just a short swim across the sand, designed specifically for novice divers to practice buoyancy.
As you explore the middle peak, you’ll find Anemone fish, various reef fish, Wrasse, Groupers, Parrotfish, and Bannerfish. Moray Eels hide in holes, while Trevally swim in small groups or alone, hunting for food.
Heading southeast from the middle pinnacle, you’ll find Nemo and her family of Saddleback Clownfish living in a symbiotic relationship with a Sebae Anemone (Heteractis crispa). A ring of rocks created by divers surrounds one of Koh Tao’s most famous residents; please respect this area by not venturing inside.
At the shallow peak of Twins, look under the ledges for Blue Spotted rays and in the shadows for Snapper. Other notable sightings at Twins Pinnacle include Sea Turtles, Scribbled Filefish, and Yellow Boxfish.
