Bullshit call by the umps on “blocking the base”-is the fielder in that situation supposed to just let the ball go by and not catch it?

100% correct call. Have you not been watching this season? The base runner is entitled to the entire side of the bag facing the runner. If any part of the fielder (foot, shin, knee) is blocking any part of that side of the bag without having possession of the ball, the runner will be awarded the next base. What is he supposed to do? Don't put his knee down between the runner and the base before he has the ball.
