So funny how almost all the other reviewers compare smartphone cameras only based on the jpeg point and shoot images they take. Go into pro mode and really test the lenses/camera before writing/making a review.

Wow, I can't believe I forgot the metering modes! MY bad you guys...here's a quick explanation: Center weighted: This is where the camera only meters the light from the center and immediate surrounding area of the image. Better for back-lit subjects like portraits with the sun behind them. Matrix metering: This is the most common and usually default. It's where the camera meters off the light from the entire image. Spot metering: This is where the camera only evaluates a small spot of light, wherever you select it, and ignores the rest of the image. this is good for really small subjects in very back-lit conditions. Also, let me know if you want an actual video on just metering modes and if I get enough interest I'll make one.

I come from a Huawei P9 plus that gave me a great deal of satisfaction but I just moved on to a Galaxy Note 20. Thank you, thank you, thank you...exactly what I was looking for in a tutorial for the Note camera. There are times when you need to take a quick shot, but there are many times when I want a posed, carefully constructed photo and the pro mode allows me to do it. Of course, a mirrorless Sony does so much more, but when you're taking a walk with your dog and you by chance come upon something worth snapping, the mirrorless isn't practical for me or just impossible to always have around. The Galaxy is my substitute for those times when I don't have a mirrorless with me. Again, thank you.

I always use Pro mode even for snapshots. I want to look them as natural as they appear to eyes. I have yet to use a high end smartphone. I am still using Samsung Note 5 camera.

Stumbled across you looking for tutorials for cannon I recently purchased. Thank you Brent for the instructions on use of Samsung as what I always thought was possible with my camera app you have shown me how to achieve my goals. I have the S10 which has all the same features but perhaps not as broad as the S20. I do a lot of hiking etc and I really don't want to add to my gear. Awesome tutorial. I just purchased a Galaxy S20 FE 5G since my Galaxy J7 V was going a bit wonky. Your vid helped me a lot by filtering the tinkering time out. I majored in photography late 70s in college. Eventually had my own studio and dark room. Burning and dodging and contrast filters. Developed medium format color too. Once digital started coming out we all laughed. Pixel quality was horrible. So we believed digital would go the way of buggy whips. Now I have some $1700 in photography equipment in storage. If the 3 eyed monster camera only uses 1 eye, what are the other 2 for? Looks I guess.

THIS is a GREAT How To video to show Users the advantages of using Pro Mode! I shoot with the Nikon D7000 (Manual Mode ONLY!) on the regular. Oddly enough, if it hadn't been for my Galaxy S9, my desire to recreate a nighttime long exposure traffic shot I saw on a computer screensaver back in May 2019, I'd have NEVER learned the fundamentals of photography and shooting in Manual Mode! I can't believe the S20 is 30" Shutter Speed-capable! Even with the 10" shutter speed, I can grab KILLER Night Long Exposure shots! Your S20 Astrophotography shot is BUTTER! You do killer work Bro, consider me SUBSCRIBED!

Oh that's awesome, I'm jealous! I hope the video helped. And just remember to watch your exposure lengths with the aurora, they can move kind of quick, so sometimes a longer exposure, like 15-30 sec will blur them out a little too much.

@@VICTIMDIE Yes, you can do that in pro mode. Just keep in mind that you can't use the tele lens in pro mode, so you will either have to digitally zoom in or use a 3rd party lens if you want a more naturally compressed and blurred out background.

The other issue is that you cannot have shutter priority and automatic iso which doesn't make sense. If you set the shutter speed when the iso is at automatic then the the iso stays stuck at whatever speed it was at that time unless you go and change it manually. That is a serious bug. I have not heard anybody criticize that.

Bought s20+ during the first wave of pandemic, at some offer price and I am like once this ends, I will start travelling again and take tonnes of pics. But now, there's this second wave which hit us hard and am still in the lockdown, can't go anywhere. But hey, thanks to you, watched your video, saved your video, downloaded your video, learnt the pro mode and hoping the lock down to end and hoping I could use all the things you said! But pro mode now works on ultra wide lens. Maybe that's coz of the update, not sure, this s20+ supports the pro mode in ultra wide lens too!

Yeah, lockdowns are a huge bummer for sure! Hopefully yours ends soon and you can get back out there. The S20 phones did recently get an update for the camera which finally allows for the ultra wide in pro mode (about time) but still no telephoto pro mode access?!? Anyways, glad my video helped!

Great video, I have a quick question: I love taking macro photos with my s9, but I realised that, when I use the pro mode on my phone, I can't focus as close as if I am using the normal jpeg-photo mode. Does your phone have a tele lens? I can't remember. I think my S9+ did. If it does, then the pro mode can't use it, which is stupid. I definitely have a couple videos about macro photography with phones. The only information I could find was: Super Speed Dual Pixel 12MP AF sensor Sensor size: 1/2.55" Pixel size: 1.4µm Sensor ratio: 4:3 FOV: 77˚ Dual Aperture: F1.5 mode/ F2.4 mode Thanks for the video, I'll definitively check it out.

Probably because Samsung assumes that 16x9 is the most widely accepted video format. I think most people would be annoyed if they had to crop their videos 10 16x9 every time they filmed something.

No, the shutter can't be held open longer than 30 seconds. I don't know if there's a 3rd party app that would let you do that, but I haven't seen any. There is no built in ND filter. I do use other (sometimes dslr) filters. Lately I've been using the moment 37mm filters as they fit the moment case and can be used without any moment lenses or adapters. I made a whole video on moment filters, sizes, and adapters. You are correct about the pro mode, you can only use the main sensor/lens in pro mode (which is why I still have moment lenses) I have done quite a few videos on this. It's not a hardware limit, Samsung could easily fix in a firmware update, though they likely never will.

That's really up to your personal preference. For me, personally, I would never switch phone OS types just for a phone camera, but I guess that's because I have real cameras that I use most of the time, and I just don't see too much difference in the high end phone cameras these days. They're all pretty good. The iPhone 12 pro camera probably has slightly better video than the Samsung stuff, but not by much, and that gap narrows a lot when you're using something like filmic pro. I think either of those options will be pretty solid as far as phone cameras go. Just depends on which OS you like.

I didn't know that Samsung has a shadows slider. That's nice. So as far as I know only Google and Samsung offer a shadows slider, though Google's solution is better because raw as well as the shadows slider work in auto mode. Samsung also has white balance settings, which Google really needs. But Samsung needs to make white balance settings available in auto mode, too. A bad white balance makes auto photos unusable, it would be very easy to fix that.

Hi Brent I came across your vid's by accident and I couldn't stop watching because I have a Samsung S20. I love using it to capture family stuff. But I have always been one of those guys who loves to learn about using the gear I'm using. (I shot high school football video years ago) Is there a video where i can be directed to that can tell me where to go when I want to shoot video with the S20 without a hot mic/audio track and just the video? Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate that! I'm not quite sure what you mean, but if you're wanting to disable the audio in the phone, I'm not sure you can do that. You'd just have to mute it or delete the audio track in your editing app.

Hi. I still use my Samsung s20 as i think the camera on it is great. You say you are using a filter in this video. You mean on the Samsung s20? Please can you tell me which one you're using and is it clamped on? The only one i can find is a cheap Neewer ND filter which may be ok but wanted to check which one you used. I have a drone and I use the ND filters on that and wanted to have my phone footage look the same as that, hence why I'm looking for the ND filter. Many thanks, great tutorial. Subbed.

Hey thanks for the kind words and sub, I really appreciate it! I don't remember what filter I was using back then. that was before moment quit making Samsung cases, so I might have been using the moment filters on their case. Either that or I was just holding one of my big lens filters over the phone by hand. I did that a lot.

Maybe you can help me? I bought the Samsung S20 thinking the camera would be good. And yours does, However following the same steps, my whole camera is moving with blurr and lag and wont focus on pro mode. Normal photo mode also just looks mediocre compared to my old phone..

How do you control depth of field with the Samsung S20 please? That was the main reason I decided to learn how to use the pro settings

It's a fixed aperture, so you can't control dof that way with the phones. Only way to do it is to get closer to your subject and have your backgrounds father away, this will create natural shallow depth of field. Also using the telephoto lens and doing the what I said above will increase the blurred background look naturally.

When I shoot in the 4 by 3 aspect ratio in Pro mode the photo information says it is shooting in 12 mp. I have raw copies turned on. Can I get full 108 megapixel resolution in the Pro mode? I have the s21 ultra. Thanks.
