As long as those classic chips are in production still or there's a huge stock out in the wild. Otherwise they would be better using FPGA or something modern. As the 8-Bit Dork released with his Commander X16 computer, you can't just buy up huge stocks of classic chips and build modern computers out of them, the parts are becoming scarce and you're then making it impossible to get original parts to repair proper computers, consoles etc. I'm hoping that's what happened when he tried to buy 1000 sound chips, the seller denied him the parts.

I believe one of the main features of this synth is all of those tangible parameters, yet every video I watch nobody ever touches them. Would love to hear what that sounds like.
@limbicbits
@limbicbits 2 жыл бұрын
Compared with other synthesis models I find parameter changes in FM synths often too drastic to really do extensive jamming. For sound design it's great, but other than bringing down or up attack and decay, or maybe fiddling with the feedback or volume levels, the results at least to me are not very musical. Also, it depends a lot on the parameter resolution. If some faders due to the used chip are only offering 7 steps, subtle changes are hard to achieve. That again would result quickly in harsh noises.

@Limbic Bits I'm approaching this from the "I want to have more fun learning FM" angle, and I also like the classic chiptune sound but I have no particular attachment to Genesis or old PCs, I never had either. What would you see as the pros / cons of going for MegaFM vs Blast Beats? I might use the sequencer but I'm more likely to play it externally.
@limbicbits
@limbicbits 2 жыл бұрын
Both are great units but hardly comparable. MEGAfm is a fully featured FM synth whereas BlastBeats is mainly meant to be a drum machine. Outstanding in its sound but nevertheless still a drum machine. So if you are mainly looking for an FM synth, MEGAfm would do a better job. But keep in mind that this one has a very particular sound and a relatively steep learning curve until you've figured out its sweet spots. I absolutely like its LoFi sound but it might not be everyone's taste. As a good alternative you might also want to check out Korg's opsix. It's also a great FM synth but sometimes more forgiving when you're still at the beginning.

@@Analoque444 I actually made some mistakes. YM2612 generates 14bit sound, but it’s dac is still 9bits. But Blast Beats uses a YMF262 chip from Sound Blaster cards and I assume outputs 16bit sound and uses a separate dac which I would guess is 16bit too but I have no idea. The clarity of the sound in this video sounded fine to me anyway.

First, I clean my units on a frequent base with a dry towel or use dust covers. Over the years I almost never had any issues with crackles or something similar and if so, I give them to a local repair shop. It doesn't cost too much and is part of a frequent checkup (every 5-7 years or so) I'd do anyhow to make sure the units will stay in shape for a long time. Compressed air might be worth a try, too.

Apart from being a digital drum machine with a sequencer they don't have too much in common. I like the LXR-02 but find this one to have more character (you have to like LoFi sound). But both machines complement each other quite well. Where the Blast Beats lacks low end, the LXR-02 steps in with rough and deep bass drums. Blast Beats on the other side brings in a flavor of dirt and melancholic sound that the LXR-02 isn't capable of - even with sample/bit reduction activated.

Why does the output stage sound so harsh and inharmonious on some of the Twisted Electrons synths? This is kinda painful to listen to. It's almost like they're mixing 2nd and 3rd harmonic distortion together and it becomes shrill.

It's quite flexible but I agree, to make it sound overwhelmingly fat, a Jomox drum machine would certainly do a better job. @limbicbits
@limbicbits 2 жыл бұрын
@@drkryovak3026 It dependes on what FM synths you're using. For example MEGAfm and BlastBeats: Both machines are quite different although there are some overlaps with the LoFi-sound. If you're into chiptunes, both machines should make a great team. But if you only rely on those, for a lot of genres it might already be too gritty. But if you, say, combine this Drum Machine with a more HiFi FM synth like MODX, Yamaha DX or even opsix, these should go quite well together. And of course, a solid background in sound design can only help.
