I'd go with the MEGAfm, tbh as it has more character than the Digitone which I also like a lot. The advantage of the Digitone is, that you don't have to use external effects to really make it shine as it's the case with the MEGAfm. I'd also add Korg's opsix to this comparison which I don't like as much as MEGAfm but find better than the Digitone.

Man you have mastered the MegaFM. Your videos convinced me to buy it so I ordered the MegaFm Mk2! Your link is for the mk1 though which is discontinued on Thomann. But my question is: I've seen that your favorite reverb is the empress but I think it's the only reverb you haven't tried with the TwistedFM. Would you still recommend it for a soon to be TFMk2 owner? =) I'd love to hear them together
@limbicbits

It’s possible that I’ll do a demo video with the MKII and an empress once the next Soundpack is finished. Empress reverb is one of my favorites, correct. But in case of the MEGAfm I use delays more often. In that case I’d go for the Meris LVX (or polymoon), or the UAFX starlight echostation

Outside of some of the negative feedback I’ve heard this synth checks a lot of boxes for me so interested in your opinion.
@limbicbits
@limbicbits 3 жыл бұрын
As FM often leads to quite noisy sounds and even more considering the noisy character of the MEGAfm itself - the unit can be very loud in some settings. But nothing, other FM synths won't do as well. But maybe this isn't what you were referring to. You have to like the noisy gritty sound of it. I guess, that's something a lot of people didn't have on their radar when purchasing this synth. In other words: This is NOT a classic HiFi 4 OP synth with faders. It's pure LoFi with a very particular sound. You need some time to get its sweet spots and to figure out the correct dosing. But to me, this synth has become one of my favorite pieces in the studio. The melancholic sound aesthetic is perfect for Dub Techno, Ambient, IDM and even harder Techno variations.

I can't figure out what happens with operator sliders when you edit and try to save a pre-programmed pattern: does it take in account only the changes or snapshots all the pots & sliders? If it takes in account only the changes, does that mean that the "physical" state of the pots / sliders probably never represents the state of the pattern? Also, if it actually snapshots the current "physical" state, does that mean that one has to manually recreate the pattern with the sliders before starting to edit?
@limbicbits
@limbicbits 2 жыл бұрын
The sliders are independent from the chosen presets. If you are changing one parameter, for example operator volume (which I did a lot in the video) you only change this single parameter. At the same time, the remaining sliders reflect a status which most likely doesn't match the formerly edited settings of the current selected patch. To avoid parameter jumps when changing the value of a parameter most synths with presets storage offer a "pickup-mode". That means that you won't hear any changes until the position of the potentiometer or slider corresponds to the saved value in your patch. A different approach would be an "analogue mode". Nowadays, many synths offer that feature (e-g- Sequential OB-6, Clavia Nord Lead). Once activated, the sound being reproduced reflects 100% the settings of all knobs and faders on the surface.

I find a good delay Almost more important as a reverb for dub techno. Meris Polymoon is a great device, so is the ninja run zen delay. Also, the NUX tape echo is a good affordable alternative. but as a hardware reverb, my choice would be empress reverb. For software solutions I’m a huge fan of Valhalla dsp delay and vintage verb

One technical question, if you set lfo 1 midi velocity in settings to ON, does the fader movements stop transmitting value changes on the display, when hitting a note? Mine stop, everything still works normal, just fader values don’t change on the display. Only DETUNE faders and knobs show value changes.

Hey! I purchased this pack and love it! Really helping me wrap my head around the synth better. One problem I am having though is I am finding a lot of the patches appear to be empty at first. It takes me messing with the total level and mult on the operators to hear a good portion of the patches, otherwise they just trigger silence. This isnt with every patch. I made sure to follow the recommended settings in the manual. Is this normal?
@limbicbits
@limbicbits 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sean, thanks for your support. That sounds odd. What MEGAfm OS are you using? It's the first time I hear about that and there are only two things that come to my mind: 1. (and without wanting to sound like a smart-ass here) Are you by chance playing Patches that are Pads? These need some time to evolve. 2. Are both cables on your output working? Many patches use the "wide" setup which hard pans both outputs. Depending on your connections, you won't hear a thing (or very little) if one of the outputs or cables is defective. Does this happen also when using headphones?
@Seanrayamusic
@Seanrayamusic 2 жыл бұрын
@@limbicbits I am on Firmware 1.9 and some patches work fine, for example, patch 01 works great, low velocity it is mellow and high velocity, the fm really kicks in. I wonder if it has to do with the wide setup because I have it running as mono through out 1 only right now... but I thought if nothing was plugged into out 2, all voices routed through out 1. It is weird that I can get sound out of the silent patches if I play with the total level of each operator, depending on the algo sometimes also have to mess with the mult and envelopes. Just confirmed the same thing in headphones. First patch it does it on is 13

@limbicbits 2 жыл бұрын
@@Seanrayamusic That is odd. But your video helps a lot, thanks! I've compared it to my unit and what I can see here is that preset 11, 12 and 13 in your video sound different to those included in the pack. Also, the LFO settings are different (just based on the LEDs in your video) and the play mode should be wide6 instead of poly12 as shown in your video. So here's another guess: Have you by chance also downloaded the freebie before? In this freebie, only 10 presets are included which could be an explanation for the differences shown here. Also,if anything has interrupted the transfer it may happen that only a part of the presets have been transferred. Please make sure to make a direct connection via midi without any USB hubs in between. That caused a lot of issues at least in my setup
@limbicbits
@limbicbits 2 жыл бұрын
@@Seanrayamusic 2nd reply. I've been running on 1.8 and to make sure it's not something a later version has caused, I've updated to 2.2. It still works fine and as expected. So based on your video my trouble shooting would include the following steps, one step at a time and everytime double checked under headphones: 1. Install the latest OS 2.2 and repeat the patch transfer as described in the manual. Does it work now? Yes / no. If no, please proceed to Step 2. 2. eliminate any USB hubs (if in between), make a direct connection and repeat the patch transfer as described in the manual.Does it work now? Yes / no. If no, please proceed to Step 3. 3. change the MIDI interface or cables and try it again. 4. Try a different SysEx Librarian. Hopefully, one of these steps will solve it.

Hi mate ..Im cheeking your videos from This one And Korg fm ... What do You think about them? Wich is The best And sound more fat ? Thanks so much
@limbicbits
@limbicbits 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, tough question. The opsix is more flexible and is able to produce a fatter sound (also due to its subtractive filters, more options on the operator section, and the two additional operators), but MEGAfm has more character. Or to put it in a different way: Although I quite like the opsix, it could be easily replaced by software. MEGAfm though is quite particular due to its gritty bit reduced and noisy sound character. You have to add effects to it to make it really shine but that hiss and digital noise really gives tracks a nice vibe. As I usually prefer character over features, I'd choose MEGAfm first, but both synths complement each other quite well. But that's just my personal approach. Others find features more important.

@limbicbits
@limbicbits 2 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I really don't. By increasing the volume of the operators, you can achieve a similar effect. But to make MEGAfm really shine in a live context, it's crucial to have a decent effect unit. The faders are ok, too in my opinion but when purchasing a MEGAfm you should really know what you'll get as it's quite particular in so many ways. At first sight, I thought - oh, is it broken? - just due to its very rough sound. But then I got deeper into its sound structure and eventually it has become one of my all-time favorites.

I did! It's been a while but within ableton you only have to use the program change command in the clip settings. If I remembered it right, there was a trick as MEGAfm's banks are organized in slots of 64. Either it was setting Bank 1 to 6 and then setting the number from 1-65, or it was using only three banks in Ableton but each one of them reflects two Banks in the MEGAfm. So if you'd like to set Patch 3 in your Bank 2 on your MEGAfm, in Ableton you'd have to Set Bank 1, Patch 68.

hello! I'm having problems transferring via sysex, can you help me?
@limbicbits
@limbicbits Жыл бұрын
Hi André, being a great synth, MEGAfm unfortunately is a bit finicky when it comes to MIDI SysEx transfers, especially sound dumps which can cause some issues. I’ve been there, and also some of the other customers. The good news is, that until now, we’ve always found a solution. In most cases it has been one of the reasons: A) There had been a USB Hub in between the Computer and the MIDI interface. Eliminate the hub and try to make a direct connection from your computer to your USB MIDI interface. B) wrong or faulty USB or MIDI cables. Try it with different ones if solution A didn’t work. C) Slow down the MIDI sysex transfer. Well, this solution is a bit more sophisticated, so I really hope that A or B already did the job. It mainly requires you to either increase the pause between played messages (under Sysex Librarian settings), to slow down the transfer speed (also under Sysex Librarian settings) or to load the sysex file into a capable DAW of your choice (Ableton can’t handle SysEx) and to transfer the pack at a very slow BPM rate. D) Try a different MIDI Interface. I’ve used the ones on a Keystep, a Launchpad 3 Mini, AMT8: all without success. The one in my RME Soundcard finally did the trick and the Roland UM-ONE should, too (after a long odyssey, I've purchased this one basically just for the MEGAfm). I’m not mentioning that to put you in a bad mood and maybe you’re luckier than I was. But it’s definitely worth a try if everything else didn’t work.
