It looks like the princess decided to face the soldiers herself not just to put them in their place, but also to allow Lilia and the others to escape with the dragon egg to her mother's castle. Unfortunately, there was a bit of a roadblock and a run in with the knight of dawn who surprisingly decided to help the gang escape has them in shock, especially upon seeing his face which leaves Silver more shocked than anyone else.

I’m fairly certain that it is neither. We know that Malleus is born much later and that his parents are dead. Considering how this is all going, it seems obvious what likely happened. Lilia was likely correct about the trap and Meleanor dies during the “duel.” So, Lilia is the one who has to hatch the egg…except he’s not the parent and does not seem to care for others easily, so Malleus takes much longer than he should have to hatch.
