So in terms of the ending I'm going to say this. As someone who's had family undergo cancer treatment, it is very taxing on the body as a whole, and seeing Kiryu so thin and frail at the end, there is absolutely ZERO chance that he's going to be what he was, around 6 and Gaiden was when he was starting to lose some of his musculature. He may be able to have something close to a regular life after the chemotherapy, but he will NEVER be at the physical level he was even in Gaiden. His various bits around Kamurocho and Ijincho gave him reminders of the people who were around him in his life, to give him reason to live rather than let the cancer kill him. All in all, this is the final time we'll see Kiryu fighting as the Dragon of Dojima, the most we could see him in the future is likely in cameos. He'll still be around, but nowhere near fighting shape after the effect the cancer had on his body.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. As a 3 time cancer survivor, I’d like to add that the treatment, while possibly curing him, also has a chance of causing chronic long term problems, depending on how intensive it is

I actually like this ending. Kiryu didn't have to die, but the Dragon of Dojima did. In a way, this is the first time Kazuma Kiryu has been alive since Yakuza 0. He has the chance to be completely himself, not a weapon in someone else's hands. I'm so happy for him.

I feel like the ending fits with the message they were going for. Everyone deserves a new chance if they want it and a chance for a new start. By not going final on that path; they chose a chance at a fresh start. Which I think it's awesome because they absolutely deserved one after everything. -Left Vague for all intents and purposes-

[Spoilers for those that haven't finished] While I understand that some people might have mixed feelings about Kiryu's ending, I found it to be a good balance between giving him the happiness he deserves while ensuring that he will not play a role in the series going forward. It may not have been the send-off we expected, but I feel like it's what he's earned. P.S. Seeing Haruka with the short haircut similar to Yumi's damn near broke my heart! 😭

Agreed, the theme of the game is essentially: Choose life. Keep fighting. Keep moving forward. Don't resign yourself to misery and despair. Kiryu's journey was him discovering the worth of his own life and that he too can desire happiness and closure in his twilight. It's why he undergoes cancer treatment. It's why he tells the oncologist his real name. His name is Kazuma Kiryu and he finally wants to live.
@blindfire3167

I'm okay with him deciding to want to live at the end, the whole point of the rememberance fiasco was more or less to fake his actual death (in the sense of causing dramatics for the player)/make him realize why he should continue fighting to live...just his final fight and his scene of him crying over the dude felt like an Ichiban thing that they screwed up. It made no sense having him cry over Ebina like that begging for forgiveness.
@Drewtendo
@Drewtendo 11 ай бұрын
@blindfire3167 I thought that the two fights should've been flipped. Ichiban fight Ebina, his *brother* , and Kiryu fight Bryce, protecting Lani in the process like he always protected Haruka.

@blindfire3167 11 ай бұрын
@@Drewtendo Yeah exactly what I thought should have happened. It made no sense having Kiryu cry over Ebina like that begging for him to forgive the shitty life all the Yakuza (even though Kiryu never was an ordinary Yakuza, he actually did things to help people and not himself/the family more often than not) gave him and begged to just move on. That made no sense for Kiryu to do almost like they were impressed by how real he cried in Gaiden and wanted one more heart break moment for the character lol.

As far as the ending goes, I'm torn as well, but I'm starting to lean a bit. The Memoirs going from "final goodbyes" to "this is what I'm fighting for to live" is super well done, and seeing Kiryu in that chair at the end made my jaw drop. I think it's a good thing. Death, death, death, all through Kiryu's life and these games. His brother, his love interest, his friends, his father. Needless losses because of his lifestyle. But this game is atonement, for the Yakuza and even for Kiryu. He thought he would get it by fighting to his death in a heroic brawl, as he has done before. But that's not the truth. He needs to accept help, and rest, so he can truly keep living for the people he loves. I think it's that quote from God of War? "The cycle ends here. We must be better."

I don’t know if it was mentioned in a past streams or commented on a video, but I love the duality between Kiryu and Ichiban’s suits both being predominantly red and white showing that they are the main characters and deep down the same with Kiryu’s love and compassion for the people being hidden under his stoic personality (his red dress shirt under the white suit) Ichiban has his on full display only pulling out his own stoicism when things get real serious (the inverse with his red suit and white dress shirt)

Yea, it def feels like he's being set up to die for sure with all the reminiscing, but as you actually read them and listen to the dialogue it's very clear that it's all meant to push him to keep trying to live. It's bittersweet. Still, I'd love just a small game where Kiryu just goes around reconnecting with all those people for real this time.

Spoilers for the ending: So, my opinion on the ending is, I too thought he should've died, but I'm actually happy with how frail they made him during that ending cutscene where he gets to live, but broken physically instead of mentally because of the cancer. The reason I'm okay with it is because of all the remembering Kiryu did in the cities as well as with Date and his old friends' help pushing him to regain his will to live. I think part of his rant to Ebina was in a way related to that-he had regained HIS will to live and wanted Ebina to fight to become a better person as well. Perhaps the reality of the cancer and Kiryu almost DEFINITELY being out of the fight for good now due to everything is why the Daidoji allowed him his name back-or at least aren't making a fuss like near the end of Date's side story. With how much muscle mass Kiryu lost there with the treatment, I'd say he's probably done with fighting, and if he's still in a wheelchair a month later and in long term hospital care, he's not leaving that hospital -anytime- soon. That's his 'fight' now, just a fight to LIVE
@ValleyChildX

I don’t think the ending feels like a cop out, it feels like a respectable and real way to remove Kiryu from the series as a main player. He’s chosen to live rather than just let the cancer take him, but at this point even if he lives to the next game, he’ll never regain the strength or ability he used to have, and I don’t believe the character would want to either. I could see him being mentioned in future titles, even to the point of having him pass off screen between now and the next title and that still feel respectful, as it will show him dying the way he always wanted to and not the way he always expected, surrounded by loved ones and dying like a normal man rather than dying in a fight like a legendary thug. I think it’s a nice bittersweet end.

For the ending, on one hand I wish they would have committed. Kiryu really had all of the "I'm going to die" flags, like every SINGLE massive red death flag. But on the other hand, all of the Memoirs of a Dragon and Life Links were all about giving Kiryu the will to live again, the will to fight this unbeatable thing even in the face of everything. I'm torn, I like the hopefulness of the ending at the end of the day. There's already so much death and loss in the Yakuza series, I think giving OUR Hero, Kiryu, an ending where he has his name back and he's fighting to survive for basically his child and grandchild. I doubt we'll get to fight with Kiryu again and, honestly, I think that's fine with me.

After finishing this game myself and coming back to watch this playthrough, I can say one thing. The ending ties in well with the Memoirs of a Dragons and Life Links. With the Memoirs, it makes Kiryu’s impending doom real and Kiryu can feel it as well with him saying stuff like how old he’s gotten and how much he misses what he had. With the Life Links, we see Kiryu get closure with people he had in his life and him seeing how much people in his life revered and loved him. It also ties in well with what Nanba was trying to do which was convince Kiryu life was worth living and actually struggling for, which was achieved. I’m more curious with how they convinced the Daidoji to let him get his name back.

ENDING SPOILERS BELOW I think people were basing their expectations of this game's ending on the heartbreaker that Gaiden ended on (which was written AFTER IW began production) I don't have any problem with anything shown in the ending. I actually really like Kiryu's ending (so long as the character is legitimately retired after this) and Ichiban literally not giving a fuck while people throw literal trash at him as he escorts Eiji to his redemption is as poignant as it is symbolically heavy-handed. My gripes are with how much was omitted from the ending. ESPECIALLY ICHIBAN'S MOM. I wonder if we'll get a DLC chapter like the Kaito files.

i've been waiting a while to leave this comment, but maybe this will help people understand why kiryu survives, which i personally feel was the best outcome for him. for most of the game he has pretty much given up fighting his cancer, he believes nothing can be done and there's no point in trying to keep living, he's given up his will to fight. we later learn during a life link that a reason he felt that way was because he'd have to live as someone else, so what's the point in fighting it. all he's ever wanted since going into hiding was to be with his family and to be able to live as himself, but he wasn't allowed and never would be allowed (or so he believed). the game points to him surviving more than it does to him dying. when you get introduced to his awakening menu, it states that it's essentially there to restore his will to fight, which it does do. i noticed that many memories had this hint of "if only..." which felt like that was a hint that he'd survive. the other thing is 2 life links in particular, and reading the description about it in the life link menu. with akiyama's, kiryu states "Akiyama told me I gave him the courage to live... so there's no way I'm going to shrivel up and succumb to death now." that, to me, was the first clear sign kiryu was going to start fighting his illness, and the next one is the haruka one, in which kiryu states "If I'm going to pay him [Date] back for this, I can't keep running from my reason to live." it does help if you do these before you finish the story, but it also helps if you read them back once you've done them. after hearing haruka's voice, after having that emotional talk with date, he's ready to keep living, he's no longer given up and he's ready to fight. he also regained his name. he was freed from the shackles of that awful faction, and he gets to see haruka and haruto while he is getting treatment (cancer treatment does tend to take its toll on peoples bodies) and has also regained his will to live. had he died and didn't regain his name, that would've been a worse way to end his story.

BIG OLD SPOILERS.... ..... .... It's not a sad ending, it's a bittersweet one: Kiryu chooses to fight for his life since the Daidoji gives him back his identity. He is battered and worn and likely will never be in good enough health to ever be 'The Dragon of Dojima' again, but he gets to live the remainder of his life - as short or long as it may be - as Kiryu without it affecting those he loves, which was all he ever wanted. For those who follow 'My Hero Academia', it's a very similar feeling and sentiment to All Might's Retirement.

I'd rather them not outright kill him, but its nice that they basically took his claws. Hes just kiryu now, without the dragon. God I wasnt ready for my man to die. SPOILERS for Like A Dragon 7 and 8 I really love the touch of Ichiban helping Eiji towards his redemption at the very end, not just for Eiji as a character but also a callback to Young Master. Since Eiji was positioned as a stand-in for Young Master in this game, this end reminds you how 7 ended: Ichiban wanted to help Aoki on the same path to redemption, but he was murdered and Ichiban never got the chance to see it through. Here, Ichiban gets to start what he couldn’t finish with Aoki, which fits nicely with the theme of reconciliation with the past that exists throughout the game.

Spoilers below . . . . . . . . . I definitely enjoy the ending a lot more than before now. I still think that there is a scene missing for Eiji that explains how he got in that situation. We see him in Hawaii taking Lani away, then a short scene where he is the middle man for Ebina and Bryce and then this. There should be a scene to how he got here. Ichiban actually trying to save him is the most Ichiban thing to do. I absolutely love how benevolent he is and how he tries to save Eiji here (kinda mirrors 7s ending) and I wonder if they use that same character trait in the next game to make him lose much more. The Kiryu end was amazing, that speech to Ebina, all his own guilt for running away after being the 4th chairman. Absolutely love that. The fact he got his name back and gets treatment, wow. His whole journey in this game from giving up to reflecting on his life to wanting to live again, beautiful. I do still think he is out as a main player for now - and I really wonder if the Daidoji actually just approved it. So definitely a lot to cover for the next games.

God this series is just too good, there are way too many things to say about it, but I may as well try. ENDING SPOILERS FURTHER!!! I think the end scene with Ichiban really goes to show that he might actually just be the best guy to exist in the Yakuza universe. And as far as moral compass goes, he's probably as close to pure good as a normal human, with normal flaws can get. As for Kiryu's ending. I think this is the split of Kazama Kiryu the Yakuza, the Dragon Of Dojima. And Kazama Kiryu the person, and arguably the Hero of Kamurocho. Kiryu the Yakuza died in the room with Ebina, the final lines were him begging for forgiveness for the actions of all Yakuza past him. Kiryu the person was able to shed the skin that was weighing him down, the sins of the yakuza as he puts it. Once he is cleansed of it he has nothing preventing him from trying to save his own life. I genuinely believe, if they wanted to commit down the route of killing Kiryu. They need a truly legendary fight and a legendary opponent. It was one of the things I found lacking for the most part in the final fight. Ebina just feels... underwhelming? He just doesn't feel like he carries any weight, his actions, morals and beliefs all build his character but it doesn't feel like someone I'm going to remember for being a threat. Weird parts of the ending; I feel like they could have spent a bit more time working in some scenes with Akane and Lani, something with Ebina, maybe get more of a visual of what happened rather than just dialogue. It could be a limitation of time and development, which is totally understandable. But it's still dissappoiting. Overall this game was incredible, I gave up watching the whole Yakuza series when I was at Saejima's part in Yakuza 5 and it took me a year and a half to get back into it. The snow and hunting and fucking Baba. I am overwhelmingly happy that I devoted the time to watch it all, this has become one of my favourite game serious of all time and I can't wait to see what comes next. And I won't lie I was prepared as fuck to cry at the end of the game, and I got close from happiness watching Ichiban just be a good dude

33:30 it would had been really cool to have had like one or two fights in the game where you get to have all like.. 10? characters at once just for the insanity of it. equally, if SEGA wanted to make an absolutely boat load of money.. may i suggest a 4 player coop yakuza game? maybe a wasteland 3 style multiplayer make your own character side game? it would be pretty cool im just saying.

What a great game. Thanks for the playthrough, Ray. This series was all I binged for the week and it was hitting all the time. I do think the ending was a cop-out, but it was still satisfying. My only gripe is with Ichiban’s mom not getting that hug from him.

7:11:26 Ebina's wondering why is Kiryu taking so long and if he wants Jo back or not? No doubt Ichiban is staring at his phone wondering if he'll get the call about Jo being alive 🤣

I got about 2 hours left of this, but I really hope in the next or later games, there comes a point where we really have to fight the daidoji and dismantle them, they got me so heated.

It’s likely there will be some level of conflict with them later on. I doubt they were introduced in 6 with no planning as to their future with what a huge position they held. The team has been very acutely aware of how much of the hand they’ve played, but this is the first game where we actually get a definitive word on their allegiance, which is now confirmed to be the CLP and nobody else, not even other members of the Japanese government. With what happened during Aoki’s plot, knowing that they lost power likely means there’s at least some fractures in structure, which would basically guarantee some rogue operations at play. Not only that, but we can see by reading just below and above the lines of this game’s ending that a lot of powerful and economically influential people have been wronged in this game, and that has to come back around eventually. We hear from Bryce himself that entire nations from across the world had big bets on his scheme, and with Ichiban and the entirety of the Fujinomiya Group being revealed as the ones who outright exposed it to the world, there’s a very real chance someone will come collecting for their losses sooner rather than later. Combine that with Ichiban being a very public figure since 7 and him having some serious notoriety amongst the Daidoji Faction, it isn’t hard to believe that someone would be willing to gather up those wronged by the party’s fall from grace and the destruction of the nuclear waste coverup and hunt him down. Ironically, it also means Kiryu would have very little to do with the greater conflict this time around, since the involvement of the yakuza would be less central in the grand scheme. Ichiban is absolutely going to be the face of the public disgraces hitting the Japanese government, and there’s no way everyone up top is going to ignore it. That’s my theory, anyway. I find it likely that more agents like the ones who assaulted Date will swap allegiances to the next big players who now have a very easy in with those who lost during this game’s climax. That’s my own thoughts, though, and I’m no writer.

I had mixed feelings on the ending, but going back and watching Ray's playthrough i'm really struck by how invested I am after just 10-15 minutes of that intro. Ichiban being Ichiban and trying to improve everyone's lives around him, out-of-work Yakuza struggling to get back into society. The start of this game really delivered in RGG fashion, and it just kinda turns into another game partway through? I know those themes are still present, it's what Ebina is trying to remove for all former Yakuza but it's very much out of sight at that point. The start of the game was very grounded. And it's tough aswell because I love Kiryu and I'm glad he got a slightly happier ending here with closure, but I feel like he hijacked the game. The game starts with Ichiban, he should be the protagonist, but he really cant compete with Kiryu storming the millenium tower with Majima, Saejima and Daigo. All when the player is fully expecting Kiryu to meet his tragic end somewhere along the way. Case and point, is that the final post-credits scene of the game is Kiryu. Again, love the guy, but this was meant to be Ichiban's game. And finally a gameplay complaint that kinda summarises my whole view on Infinite Wealth... the cutscenes and the narrative had Kiryu fighting Ebina in a crazy hectic 1v1, but the gameplay had my team of 4 beating the crap out of this guy. But I loved the gameplay in general. Which all makes me think, I *wish* this game had been 2 different games. I wish we'd gotten Infinite Wealth which was only Ichiban, Hawaii, his evil half-brother, etc etc. And I wish we'd gotten Like a Dragon Gaiden II with basically all the Kiryu content in a beat-em-up style game... I loved everything in this game, I just think they clashed and this would have been better as 2 games.

I was finally able to finish watching this series. All it took me was an extra 17 days compared to Ray's playthrough, lol. And I STILL feel like there's so much to do. My take on the ending is that while all signs were pointing towards Kiryu's death I think this was a much better send off for him. Main character death has always bothered me and feels like a cop out and always used for the shock factor, but this way it was done in this was to break through his hard headedness and finally see the value of fighting for his life as long as he can since (supposedly) the Daidoji let him go and he can be with his family again. And it's fitting that Ichiban is a perpetual dumbass, lol.

[ENDING SPOILERS] I think what bugs me about the ending is how many things aren’t shown. We never got to see Ichiban say bye to his mom before she went to help Lani become the new sage, we never see what happened to ANY of the big former Yakuza (Daigo, Majima, Saejima, Sawashiro), and we never even got see Yamai turn himself in. He just kinda vanished and was never mentioned again after he left the hospital.

Regarding the ending for Kiryu, I feel like they should have actually shown his reunion with Haruka/Haruto, instead of what we got which was more of an implication. This feels kind of like the ending to Metal Gear Solid 4, where even though Snake didn't die at the end and chose life, it's all but stated that he's spending his last few months with the people he cares about and left at that. The way Infinite Wealth did it makes it feel like we might see him in Yakuza 9/whatever the next entry is, which takes away from it somewhat.

I have mixed emotions on the ending, i feel like it could have been a good fitting end for him, in his final moments begging forgiveness for the sins of the yakuza, but then they go and pull the same thing they did in 6. On the other hand, maybe he’ll get real closure in the next game. I just pray they dont kill him off between games since there’s usually a time gap between them.

Nah the ending in 6 was him faking his death only to realize it was a mistake in doing so as it seems. His mistake was turning away on his past and not acknowledging it to continue moving forward. I think all the build up with the life links and memoirs telling Kiryu to continue on living and enjoy the rest of his life in peace finally made him realize he should do that and not turn away from everything he's worked up to this point. It really felt like some of his friends were calling him out on his cowardice, especially Akiyama. Since now there is no more big shot yakuza group anymore so i don't think any more danger will be posed to Kiryu and his family anymore. The tojo, omi, and now the seiryu are gone
