TL;DR: Master Who/Woo/Dr.Who shot works by running a bunch of simulations and picking the one that gives most score. Gray creams for the AI shot in Peggle and theorizes how it works ("It aims for the purple peg, or the bucket") and stuff, but its actually the more obvious (though probably most effective) method that comes to mind. Behind the scenes, it just simulates each shot within a few degrees of where you click. Old games like Peggle don't need a ton of computing power for like actual physics calculations, and uses way more just displaying effects and the screen. So, for the simulations, it can just run the physics calculations really fast (like when you press the speed up button, but faster), taking advantage of the fact it doesn't need to actually show each of the simulations, and then pick the one that gives you the most score. It only runs a simulation for every few degrees, and each one only takes the tiniest fraction of a second (depending on how long the ball bounces around of course), so the short delay when you use the power is enough usually. Sometimes, there might be a lot of very long simulations, and then it'll take an extra second, especially on crazy custom levels (like "Why Are There So Many?" where Gray thought the game crashed because it took so long). It's real interesting, but it's probably the least "creative" solution, when compared to a theoretical AI that always tries to bounce such that the ball hits the purple peg or the free ball bucket. The reason people assume that's what it's doing is because there's point bonuses associated with the bucket and the purple peg, so the chosen shots more often than not include them.

Tbf, the actual base game (the dreamcast version) is fairly stable, it's the steam version which is 4th down the chain of ports (Dreamcast -> Gamecube -> PC -> Steam) with each port introducing new bugs without fixing any of the old ones that is a buggy mess.
