MKBHD has not responded to this criticism about Panels yet. MKBHD launched his Panels app in a video about the iPhone 16. It's not that bad if you think the amount of people he's bringing to the creators, who most would otherwise never get even 10% of the amount of traffic. It's a risk and he literally put his reputation in play and we see how it backfired. He literally is taking all the blame, while the creators are "save" even though they would be taking half of that $50 per year subscription. So, the 50/50 is not even thst bad.

I've never really had loyalty to any content creator. I don't get sucked into that parasocial stuff. So in a way I'm almost like a psychopath. I just don't see them as people. They're providing media entertainment. And the moment they're not doing their job then I go to another person. That's the fun thing about competition is that it encourages the highest quality content (and good decisions) to rise above. In a lot of ways, I'm loyal to good products and services, but I'm not loyal to a business (just because). --- It's also kinda like the average American job. I'm not going to watch all of these videos that have been posted about this but I have to admit I'm definitely disappointed in MKBHD. I'm an older woman and literally had a conversation a few days ago about this guy start and what he's done and my admiration for him. I will still respect his opinion but this is definitely left the bad taste in my mouth. I truly thought he and his team were smarter than this. This should be no monthly or yearly subscription for any wallpaper app. Honestly I didn't even know there were still wallpaper apps out. I was never really a fan of MKBHD. I don't dislike him, I just never really got engaged with his content. I just know him as "The Big KZbinr with the Big Expensive Camera Robot and Car Rig that collabed with LTT once." and more recently as "The Guy that 'kills' companies." I only watched his iPhone 16 video because I was looking at upgrading from my 12. Even I was taken aback by the $50/yr price tag. I'd rather buy the LTT Screwdriver or something else that's actually useful for me than pay $50 for an app subscription. I'll stick to getting my wallpapers from Google, VectorStock ($1 per Image), and Vincentrao on Twitter. (I know his stuff is AI but it's free)

I used to watch all of MKBHD videos then I realized he's out of touch he complains about things that 9-5 people don't complain about like the weight distribution on a phone? It’s actually worse than it sounds. On a per-product transaction 50/50 is near criminal but scales enough for the artist. Say it costs 10, they get 5, sell 10 and they get 50, good stuff. Now when it comes to subscription, they are only going to share half of that, except with the entirety of the artists. So while they walk away with the 25$ every time, the other 25$ will be split between more and more artists. The he single prices are likely structured to push people to the subscription. This app is dead in the water. I work in SaaS and this is a dead product before it began.

I actually do remember asking “Where’s that wallpaper from?” being a recurring topic under his videos… but that was around 2015-2018 😅 In his “What’s in my phone” videos he already shows that he uses “Backdrops” to get wallpapers It’s his first shitstorm, he hold up pretty well so far. If he would make an excusing statement we would all forget about it (or it’ll get meme’d for fun) but he seems to go the fruity road and act like there’s nothing wrong. Different topic and story but this reminds me of his bold move of just making the red triangle sweatshirt his own, though it was a random amazon sweatshirt he bought years ago and to find it on Amazon you had to type “MKBHD sweatshirt” because he popularised it 😅
