At 4:56 PM on Tuesday, May 2, 2024, the Sutherlin Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire at the intersection of North Umatilla and East Third Avenue in Sutherlin. Upon arrival, firefighters found the front and side of the home actively burning. A second alarm was called, bringing in crews from the Fair Oaks Rural Fire District, Oakland Rural Fire Protection District, Kellogg Rural Fire District, North Douglas County Fire & EMS, and Central Douglas Fire & Rescue. The Sutherlin Police Department, along with crews from Avista and Pacific Power, also responded.
The house, a single-family home, was unoccupied at the time of the fire. In total, eight fire engines, one ladder truck, one brush truck, and two command rigs were on the scene. The fire spread to the yard and a few nearby small trees but was quickly suppressed by fire personnel.
Due to the fire activity and hot weather, the second alarm was called to ensure adequate personnel for rotation, preventing dehydration and heat exhaustion. The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation.
