I only just realized; this is a game that stars a person returning from war.. and the game's story and visuals almost never make reference of that fact. Wouldn't that have made for a much better Silent Hill story? If the game actually dealt with PTSD or the horrors of war in some respect? It really shows how careless they were in designing the character. They did it for a cheap explanation for the mechanics and that's it.
@JohnnyBMused10 жыл бұрын

If a little kid wants you to find their lost toy, then most people would assume the kid was designed so we'd WANT to help them. You know, make them pretty young and visibly scared, and actually tap into the protective instincts that we have fucking hardwired into our bodies. Most people will already want to help a lost and frightened kid, and possibly even more so if they're a bit lost and frightened themselves. We can all remember a time when we were little and how scary even mundane things can seem in those years. If you want it a little more eerie, then maybe just make the fear seem to stem from the loss of the toy. Most people can relate to that, too: lots of people had things that made us feel less afraid of a given situation just by virtue of them being familiar to us. So just have the kid seem a *bit* afraid, but make the focal point of that fear not that they're lost in a scary-ass asylum, but that they're lost in a scary-ass asylum and can't find the one thing that might make them feel a little less frightened. And it could easily be made more organic by making the toy something that the player seeks out to try and convince the kid of their sincerity. Maybe the kid actually *is* scared shitless, and amidst all this creepy-ass hospital shit, you find a nearly pristine stuffed animal. Players aren't fucking morons. We can connect the dots between "stuffed animal item" and "terrified child in need of comfort." But this bullshit? "I *want* my toy" and "I guess you're not my friend" aren't fucking endearing, at least not the way the awful voice actor read them. As soon as ANY person we're supposed to be protecting sounds like an entitled dipshit and the game still demands we help them, our immersion is shattered. At that point, we're not helping the kid because we want to. The player should NEVER be saying instinctively, "Well, fuck you too, kid," like Matt and Pat did. But I guess dipshit children is a failure of the game designer.

You know, the soldier aspect could have worked pretty well, if he had a war injury or something. Like he was missing his good arm. He'd still have combat experience, but since he's missing his good arm, he's not very good at fighting anymore. It's a shame that so many "horror" devs forget that in a horror game, the player character almost always has to be at a disadvantage.
@grimmlyhollows11919 жыл бұрын
Another cool thing they could have done with the soilder aspect would to have monster designed to represent pychological injuries like PTS or monster that represent difficult morral choices you have to make as a soldier, kind of like how the Raw Shocks change designed based around your choices and enviorment. It would have helped stroy wise and give the character more depth.

I know it's a super old comment but I'm gonna reply anyway lol, but silent hill 4 is really great imo, I think I actually prefer it to sh3. It's so relentlessly oppressive! The only aim of your character is to escape, and there's no escape, even your safe apartment offers no relief in the second half. It really drew me in to the feeling of spiralling into madness, and starting to empathize with a damn serial killer! It's like Stockholm syndrome: the game. It really stayed with me psychologically in the way sh1 and sh2 did, but that sh3 (awesome as it was) missed the mark on.

Alright, idea: start with what a lot of people are already saying. Make Alex an actual soldier suffering from some degree of PTSD. Take Dark Mountain Productions' suggestion and give him a physical disability, specifically the loss of his dominant arm. But, here's my suggestion: let us see Silent Hill from three similar but different perspectives. Maybe start things on a bus returning to Silent Hill with three veterans back from Whateveristan. Alex is one, but then there's...let's call them Nathan and Kyle. Maybe Nathan has a prosthesis below the knee on one leg, but he otherwise seems pretty healthy in the head. Maybe Kyle is unharmed physically, but he's clearly struggling to shift from a wartime mindset to a peacetime one. Then, the bus crashes, because of course it fucking does, and the characters are separated. They periodically run into one another, but usually not in any way that would cause stupid AI companion/co-op shenanigans. Now, here's the meat of the idea, and why it would probably never happen because it'd be 'too hard' or whatever: make the three parallel storylines play differently. Maybe Alex's chapters have an emphasis on puzzle-solving. Finally, there's a damn reason you need to track down tools and such to clear obstacles and advance because Alex's missing arm means he can't just force things. And to make things actually *feel* different, maybe add a button-mashing prompt during certain actions that Nathan and Kyle don't need to do to emphasize the extra physical challenge Alex has. Next up is Nathan. He's the most physically capable of the three despite his prosthesis, and his chapters would be more combat-oriented. Maybe he's the only one of the three to have a gun with any real consistency. But as his part of the story advances, it would get more and more apparent that he's not quite as stable as he comes across. Maybe his attitude is a coping mechanism that lets him ignore/suppress what he doesn't want to confront. And as his chapters go on, ammo gets more scarce, and maybe enemies start showing abilities that force the player to use more of it, too. Maybe one enemy becomes intangible at random moments, or projects some kind of illusion that needs to be broken before they can be killed. Eventually, the running-and-gunning becomes impossible, running parallel to Nathan being forced to actually confront his repressed feelings. Then, you've got Kyle. Of the three, I think he'd be the hardest to implement, but in the right hands, he could be the highlight of the story. His issues would be the least tangible of the three, but they'd be exactly the sort of thing that you'd expect Silent Hill to prey on. This would be where the horror really comes out to play, ideally in a way that gives a sense of continuous anxiety and dread. Kyle can't turn off the instincts that make him think 'roadside bomb' when he looks at a pile of trash on the curb, or 'sniper' when light glances off a high window. He's back in his hometown, but everything that once felt familiar, normal, and safe is now anything but. And *that's* horror I'd gladly pay to see, in no small part because it's a fear very much grounded in reality. The war followed him home, and he's the only one who can see it. So yeah. Long-ass post, but I wanted to get it out of my head.

+electricbayonet2 Oh my god, THANK YOU! This is what pisses me off the most about this game. Soldiers come home with so much baggage. A soldier coming home from say Iraq or Afghanistan would be an amazing protagonist if they actually explored issues of I dunno, war maybe? That thing they were in that involved killing other human beings at their own detriment? This game could have been AMAZING if they went that route, but they didn't. They were like fuck all that noise, check out this Alex guy. He doesn't have PTSD at all! In fact, he was never a fucking soldier to begin with. What's especially interesting about a soldier in Silent Hill is that their monsters don't even have to look like monsters. It could be like every human being they come across attacks them, and they can't tell whether or not those people were actually ever there or not. I would love an overwhelming feeling of "Did I just kill a person? Or were they a monster crafted by this place? Was there ever anything there at all?" Fuck. This could've been so good. Do you know anything about how to make games? I can do concept art like nobody's business, and I know a really talented composer and an equally as talented animator. Let's make this game.

As someone who just beat Downpour, I will say that the game had a pretty interesting character and the world, despite being completely fucking wrought with framerate issues, was a genuinely packed world, almost every corner had something stashed away and there was a lot of detail. But it didn't look like a Silent Hill game, it looked like a post-apocalyptic game. Plus I still found it pretty intriguing when reading through the notes although all of them felt too professional.. They didn't have any by newspapers or scrawled notes by families.. They were all prison notices or psychological assessments. Now Homecoming, I haven't played for a while but I did think it carried an atmosphere that suited Silent Hill and I did think the monster designs were pretty interesting.. Or at least, some of them. But holy shit, Alex Shepherd was the most "I'm a cardboard soldier man".. Nothing like any of the other protagonists in the franchise.

I really hate children in horror movies and games. It seems that nine times out of ten, they only exist to get captured by the bad guys and need to be rescued. It's the cheapest way to add tension to the plot.
@OldIronJohnson10 жыл бұрын
Going back through this and downpour, what really strikes me is that Downpour at least had monsters semi-consistent with its themes. Sure, the design was garbage-tier, but you could argue that most of Moiph's issues were with an external person, resulting in humanoid monsters. Whereas here, you have aesthetically good-looking stuff thrown in for no fucking reason at all.
@Nodrog66610 жыл бұрын
At least Downpour was trying its damn hardest to be a good game and honor the originals. Homecoming is just a big "fuck you" to the fans. You can kind of follow the events of Downpour. In Homecoming, nothing makes any fucking sense.
@suwatsaksri719110 жыл бұрын
Pyramid Head was also a lazy "fuck you, enjoy your pointless fanservice instead of actual story"
@Nodrog66610 жыл бұрын
Suwat Saksri Yeah, it bothers me that Pyramid Head is in anything outside of SH2, because it just doesn't make any sense. They couldn't be bothered to come up with their own "big bad." That masked raincoat man in Downpour was fucking dumb, but at least it wasn't "because reasons" Pyramid Head.
@kannyboy184710 жыл бұрын
Yeah sure, close your eyes to every damn monster in the game being actually relevant and making sense because you are butthurt. Downpour's monsters had nothing and was some of the worst monster designs I've ever seen, along with tlou.
@OldIronJohnson10 жыл бұрын
Kanny Boy Boy howdy, that Pyramid Head was sure relevant to... something. Was James Sunderland hiding in the shadows behind you? And who could forget "skinless dog," "irritating bug," "miner with pipe," and "hick with circular saw." Truly worthy candidates for a horror design hall of fame.

I ended up buying this game on Saturday, just completed it half an hour ago and I have to say, it really isn't too bad. Even when I compare it to the masterpiece that is Silent Hill 2, I still really like it. Although the final two puzzles in the game can fuck off, and the combat with the nurses and the soldiers was super sucky at times. But I'll definitely play it again.

+Dachshund103 Sometimes games are mediocre enough to be difficult to classify neatly. A lot of people are weird. A lot of people, including me, can enjoy things that are weird and no really well made, as long as they don't think it's too bad. For example, I fucking loved MGS 4. I had no idea what was going on, I loved the cutscenes, i loved ALL THE GUNS, and to this day people everywhere moan about it constantly that it's the worst MGS game. I dunno. Perhaps it's not just the game's quality, but the enjoyment and interaction you derive from struggling with it, laughing at it, or laughing with it.

+Michael Mitchell I feel its not as bad as everyone makes ti out to be. I mean its no silent hill , but still its not as rotten as claimed. It did still keep the mental problem of the main character like many of the installments before it.

You know, if they wanted to do a Silent Hill 2 for a soldier they should've had it center around survival's guilt. Like, Alex was in Desert Storm or something and chickened out while his squad was killed... or he was a PoW and the intel he squealed got them killed or something. The monster designs could be based on his squadmates' deaths, vices, etc. Then the game could have been about him forgiving himself. But nah.

The American approach to horror is baffling there's no place for subtlety or nuance when you have to fill the screen with gore and jumpscares every ten minutes. You know just how awful this game was going to be in the first five minutes after you interacted with Pyramid Head as the first moment in the game then your first enemy is a over the top "sexy" nurse who looks like she's drunk, then you jump right into the other world. Did the developers ever hear of the term "build up and tension", this game has more in common with the Scooby Doo approach to horror then it does genuine horror.

The issue is also that Konami doesn't think video games are difficult. That they don't need visionaries like Kojima because you can just give any game to any developer and it works, like it's a boxed good type of manufacturing process, not something that needs to be crafted specifically and every studio has their own approach to it. Hence just handing it out to a studio that has no idea what they're supposed to do with a Silent Hill game and do it their way. They're certainly not blameless, but Konami is at fault just as much for treating their very iconic IP like it's some sort of mass produced good they can outsource to anyone and get the same results.
@SpeedBoost8 жыл бұрын
+l0rf Konami are possibly the worst videogame company that are still in business today, they have no respect for the artists and creative's that established their company. I actively hope that Konami goes out of business and they're forced to sell off all their IP's, as they are so mind numbingly disrespectful to their employees and fans that they have destroyed their own legacy. Then handing the Silent Hill franchise to the living breathing moron that is Tom Hewlett is just baffling. The man who claimed "I am the biggest Silent Hill fan in existence, that's not hyperbole, there's no bigger Silent Hill fan than me" who then went on to criticize every aspect of the original games and wanted to rewrite Silent Hill 2 because according to him (The biggest Silent Hill fan on the planet) "The story to SH2 makes no sense".

God. This game's opening is just so... flat, compared to Silent Hill 2. Alex has no personality, some of the only good bits of the story are previewed in such a bland way (with them showing the kid murders), and there is no build-up to any of the Horror that the game is gonna show you. It is just such a dull introduction that really does reflect what this game is like.

Interesting fact about those nurses. If you look closely you can see that the nurses are pregnant, if you get them to face you when between you and the TV you can see the slight outline of a fetus in them. Pyramid Head is a punisher, so the guy dreaming of Pyramid head means that there's something he needs to be punished for.

***** Have you read the article on how Resident Evil is targeting a younger fan base? They assume when their fans reach a certain age they'll just stop playing games and they'll lose all their money. Reading it upset my stomach :/. I love megaman, megaman x is one my favorite games. But it just dropped off and they don't seem to have any plans to revive him. Capcom has ruined DMC and left megaman for dead, RE is well on its way and I wouldn't be surprised if street fighter headed that way to. What the hell changed man :c?

My favorite Silent Hill so far was 3. Heather was a great, unique protagonist compared to Harry and James, and godfuckingdammit crawling, living walls are fucking scary. Bring crawling blood walls back. The goddamn movies fucked that up by making Silent Hill all "industrious", because apparently factory equipment is scary to idiots.
@mastermarkus530710 жыл бұрын
I thought that Heather was a really good protagonist and the aesthetics of the environments were great, but I thought the first two thirds felt a bit tedious to play and didn't take my interest as well as the other games. Also I didn't really like Claudia as a villain or Douglas as a character (blame the deadpan voice acting for that second one) - though Heather and Vincent were both great. Silent Hill 2 is my favourite of the games though James can be a little... awkward.
@GroovyDude009 жыл бұрын
Factory equipment is scary as shit when it's loud and oppressing. In Homepour they ruin that aesthetic completely with shitty sound design. What a lost opportunity to actually make something good.

+Master Markus In retrospect I have to admit that Silent HIll 2 had the better story. I used to think James being a random chode took away from the story... When I realized that him being a random chode makes Silent HIll all the more terrifying. ANYBODY can fall victim to it, not just people who are somehow linked to it's past. It abstracts it's power, too. Instead of some demon-esque pussy God... It's... SOMETHING. Something... Is corrupting the town. Twisting reality. Calling people to it. Giving birth to Hell. Is it Cthulhu? It's probably Cthulhu. Ah, but seriously... I think Silent Hill is a Great Old One all by itself. The Silent Hill, the Place That Should Not Be.
