Can't wait to see why Mei is turning into a red panda! Hope you enjoy our Turning Red Movie Commentary and Turning Red Film Reaction Video.
Mini Disclaimer - Our Turning Red movie commentary is not intended as a replacement or substitute for the Pixar Movie Turning Red, definitely support this film if you can, whether that's through Disney Plus or at a Movie theatre/Cinema... It's definitely worth it :)
Pixar Synopsis: Turning Red is an American 3D computer animated coming-of-age film produced by Pixar set to be released on March 11, 2022. The film is written and directed by Domee Shi, and will be Pixar's 25th feature film. In Turning Red, Mei Lee is a confident, dorky thirteen-year-old torn between staying her mother's dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. And as if changes to her interests, relationships, and body weren't enough, whenever she gets too excited (which for a teenager is practically ALWAYS), she "poofs" into a giant red panda! Turning Red is directed by Academy Award-winner Domee Shi (Pixar short Bao), produced by Lindsey Collins, Turning Red (also known as Red or Volviéndose rojo in some countries) stars the voices of Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Ava Morse, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Hyein Park, Orion Lee, Wai Ching Ho, Tristan Allerick Chen, and James Hong. It is the first Pixar film to be solely directed by a woman, the first to take place in Canada, and the second to feature an Asian lead character after Up. The film is Pixar's 25th feature film.

this is what these kind of movie was for, you guys are awesome ✨... I just feel disgusted on some reviews where they say "this isn't me/ I feel alienated/ it's exhausting/ it's not for everyone" like ffs, imagine the underepresented people who still enjoy every disney/pixar movies throughout the years even if they're not represented in it; they can emphasize and relate in some ways to a film such as this one... it's representing a culture they're not knowledgeable abt, then complains how they can't relate to a 13 yr old asian gurl but then again they can relate to a car, a fish or even a toy 💀

You hit the nail on the head here! Some of these reviews reveal more about the person reviewing them they do about the movie… The idea that some people can relate to a car or a fish more than a 13 year old Asian girl is honestly depressing 🤦🏻‍♂️ If you are used to always being represented then you never have to do any work to think about how you can relate to or empathise with a character… even though that’s exactly what underrepresented people have been doing for decades 🤦🏻‍♂️ And even if you can’t relate at all, enjoy the journey through someone else’s eyes. ✌️☺️

It's also one of the most multi cultural cities on the planet. If you rank cities by most people who are "foreign born" Miami wins overall with 58% but Toronto comes in at a strong second place with 47%. And beyond those number, Miami's mostly people from the Americas while Toronto's population comes from all over the world. In addition to Nika's list there's actually multiple China towns, two Koreatowns, little India, little Portugal, and numerous other areas with notable multicultural backgrounds. York center for instance has a large Filipino population, Roncesvalles has a large Polish population, but it's not like these are strict divisions. Willowdale has the largest percentage of Iranians but it's also one of the areas with the largest percentage of Chinese and Korean Canadians in Toronto. Not to mention how many Filipino, Russian and English people in Willowdale there are.

This movie was pretty relatable to me because I got my period young and one day I forgot my pads after staying over at my grandma's house. So my grandma drove to the school and stood by the playground and when my class came out to play she passed me a paper bag full of pads through the fence. My teacher was understandably freaked that a playground lurker gave me a mysterious package and opened it in front of the class so they all saw my pads and laughed and called me pee girl for weeks since we were young enough that most of them didn't know what periods were and thought they were some kind of pee pads I guess? Good times. Anyway, great reaction. I enjoyed it as a first time watcher of you guys!

Something similar happened to me. The teacher saw a couple of boys around my jacket and told them to show what they had taken. They had taken one of my big pads and had opened the envelope. The whole class turned to me (the coat had my name), someone asked "do you bleed that much?" and everyone started laughing. The bell had just rang so I just ran to my house. Fortunatly, no one seemed to remember it the next day.

The synching of periods is a myth. Happens about ever 20-28 days or so so there's bound to be times they fall on the same day. Girls learning to time travel, transform or getting telekinetic powers while they go through certain stages in puberty, however is totally true.

Love how interested yall are in puberty! Lol. Puberty in girls can start before they get their first period. Fenale puberty also involves growing taller, voice changes, breast development, & a lot of other internal changes that happen before the first period or ovulation. Puberty is a lot of seemingly random steps that can happen in any order, & I think that's similar in boys, too. I noticed puberty starting when I had to wear a training bra lol, & that was years before my actual period 😅 what a time....

1:03 I agree and I love seeing now glasses wearing main characters. As a glasses wearer myself just seeing them wear glasses meant alot to me plus no 'no glasses I'm blind' common jokes I've seen in the past with these characters (which based on your individual eyesight if your near sighted or far can be different for all). Also while they have glasses it's also not super important to the character and not super defining yet still very much apart of them with in turn is also good as they are more then just one aspect. Thus far for 'Glasses Main Characters' from my memory it's been for Disney (and under their big umbrella) and for their movies: Milo from Atlantis, Chicken Little, Lewis From Meet The Robinsons, Mirabel, and now Meilin. Mirabel my favorite of the glasses wearing characters on the list but time will shape things. If others have glasses wearing main characters from Disney they recall I'll love to learn.

Yes, I agree! It’s so great to not use them as a stereotypes or negatives. I love Milo Thatch but even he is given glasses to show how intelligent he is. @@EdizAndBen well, it’s also due to hormones. We release these and when we sleep in the same room for like two days we breathe these in, and if you’re not far away from your next period, it syncs. This happened to me once when my school sent us to a poor town here in Mexico to help people who had just gone though an earthquake. They split us into groups and we were four women sleeping in the same tent and we all started at the same time. Evolutionary there’s a theory behind syncing. If female mammals sync their periods, they will also go through fertility at the same time and get pregnant at the same time. Once the babies are born, women can help each other take care of their children/offspring and it’s easier to handle pack/group duties. An example is how some lionesses go hunting while one or two stay to take care of all the cubs of the pride.

Some of the parental responses to this movie are really the worst part; I was 17 in 2002 so only a few years older than the girls in this movie so around the age the parents of kids watching it are. The parents whose kids are watching it act like they were never tweens and how dare the girls disrespect their parents like that, like their children aren't supposed to find themselves and become their own people, just continue to become a perfect copy of their parents. What I think is funny is that you mention O-Town in this video, and the song that I remember most from O-Town is "Liquid Dreams."

And they are acting like every Disney character up till now has just obeyed their parents every wish 😂 Ariel, Mulan, Moana, Pocahontas, Jasmine, Pinocchio, Jane and Michael Banks, Miguel, Luca, Merida all actively go against their parents! "the bear...the big blue house" I HOOTED 😂😂😂 The movie overall was SUCH an accurate depiction of the Asian immigrant kid experience, and especially the experience of a young teen trying to clumsily figure things out about herself and the world. The depiction of healing intergenerational trauma was masterful. And anyone complaining about not being able to relate....when the majority of media stories are about you and your culture and experiences, what do you think the rest of us have felt like all this time??? Smh. I LOVED you two's reaction and sensitivity and openness, you just got a new subscriber ❤️ and YES, having an animated character named Priya does mean a lot ❤️ My favorite thing about this movie so clearly shows that there was no one right way to be and no one choice that was empowering for everyone. The best choice for Mei to be true to herself was to keep the panda, but the best choice for Ming to be true to herself was to transform it, because they were both very different people with very different pandas. For Mei, her panda was a source of happiness and expression and fun and authenticity, but for Ming, her panda was a source of trauma and pain and made her LESS authentically herself and who she wanted to be. And I'm so glad the moral of the story wasn't that "they all just needed to learn to love and accept their pandas and let them out." Because while that was demonstrably the right choice for Mei, it was demonstrably the wrong choice for Ming. Even Sun Yee presented all of them with the choice, and behaved lovingly towards all of them, whatever they chose, without judgement or disappointment - she held the portal letting them transform their pandas if they wanted to, and flew with Mei when Mei chose to keep hers - she helped ALL of them in their choices. And what I love is that Ming DID learn to love her panda, when she was able to take the choice to transform her panda into something that couldn't hurt or traumatize her anymore, so she got to be herself and love on her panda in the tamogotchi, rather than suppress and ignore it. It doesn't make Ming fake or wrong or "not accepting/loving herself" or not being authentic, and I'm so happy that both choices were presented as equally valid and empowering when they truly were made as each individual's CHOICE, and not forced or expected. Ming's first panda transformation, when she locked it away as a child, was suppression due to her mother's expectations, but after she healed from her trauma she was able to transform her panda the second time into something she could acknowledge and love. Keeping the panda out wasn't the right choice for her to be able to love it, transforming it in a non-suppressive way was how she could be her authentic self and love her tamogotchi-panda, and that's okay. It's so important to me that this movie shows that making the empowering choices that are true to yourself and allow you to be your true self may be opposite choices to the people around you, including the people you love. By the very end, both Mei and Ming respect each other's choices, are not judgemental or disappointed, and recognize that their way wasn't the only right one. The right choice for one person may be completely opposite from LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE and that is okay, and making the "expected" or "societally approved" choice doesn't mean you are any less authentically yourself than the person who is breaking the mold, if that choice is truly authentic to you.

About the intro to the film... Of course we should honor, love, and respect our parents. But everything Mei listed are just natural obligations parents have. "Oh, we didn't let you die!" "Ahhh, but we clothed & fed you!!" "Ai-yah! We raised you as responsible human beings should raise a child!" Cool stories, bruh. You did your basic duties as parents. Why does that entitle you to have complete control over your child's entire life?! My parents are Chinese-Muslim immigrants (my entire family fled from China after WWII), and I can understand why immigrants who've escaped from war/hardships/persecution/atrocities put an extra burden on future generations, due to trauma. But those traumas need to be addressed, rather than passed down to children, as they can potentially poison entire generations. Yes, there are "good" traits hammered into the youth--hard work, responsibility, respect for elders, etc. But there's often extra baggage--including racist & prejudiced thoughts--that get passed over. Fun fact: Irish, Italian, and European immigrants to the US were often not considered "white (or Protestant) enough." There were plenty of ghettos/tenement sections of cities in which these people were forced to congregate, leading to despair & higher crime rates. The Mafia? Yep. Irish Mobsters? You bet! The "Wah Ching Gang"? Duh! The BEST food?! YAAAAASSSS. Aaaanyways, what I REALLY wanted to say is that I loooooved y'all's reactions to this film; yes women's periods can actually synch up and it sucks, 'cause everyone becomes a nightmare bitch; I totally used to doodle fanart of crushes (especially animated ones); my mom was determined to raise me under a rock; the number 4 in Mandarin sounds a lot like the word for "death," so that's why it's unlucky; aaaaand I'm drunk, so I thankfully can't type anymore. I live in NY and there is a China Town Neighborhood but also right next is a Little Italy Neighborhood. This is a case of history when people move to a new location that it's not uncommon for people of a culture or other aspects to find & come together in or form a neighborhood. Many 'port cities' have neighborhoods with different cultures/communities and in time those neighborhoods can change based on many things. The neighborhood I live in use to have a huge Dutch community in the past but when certain jobs were gone and other new technologies entered that changed how many piers and trains systems worked altered the neighborhood.

If you guys want to learn more about periods, its basically when one of the millions of eggs inside the ovaries reaches maturity and pops into the fallopian tubes and travels to the uterus. If no egg implants itself to the lining of the uterus in time than once a month the womb rejects it wall lining which results the bleeding aspect of a woman period.

As a theater kid in high school.. All the girls in tech and acting would sync up right before hell week and it was the WORST cause we'd all be dying on our periods while trying to finalize a whole stage production. So it's definitely a real thing when you spend THAT MUCH TIME around the same group of girls :') ALSO for girls, puberty starts when our breasts start to grow (so like starting as young as 3rd grade for some) and then we get hair and all that. Typically we get our periods 2 years after our breasts start to develop. Hope that helps lol

20:39 like the thing about Asian parents is that you really can't put anyone above them and you need to prioritize them over anyone else, even if you know that it's the wrong thing to do. Mei definitely knows that she should stand up for her friends but it's because Asian parents usually pressure their kids into being perfect to the point where they're scared to do something their parents won't approve of. Even if she did stand up for her friends, her mother would've gotten even madder (if she's anything like my mother at least). Mei's mother probably isn't as bad as other parents i'd say, considering mine and others have a constant habit of guilt tripping and gaslighting us. Anyways sorry about the long rant I just had to get it off my chest :). ANYWAYS! I loved your reactions! I believe Turning Red is the first Disney/Pixar that focuses on adolescence, puberty, and even periods. Periods are still stigmatized today, and it's sad. I liked Turning Red because I have never seen ANY kids' content where they normalize menstruation, let alone talk about it. The first kids' film to feature sanitary products. I was so glad to see Pixar pop that stigma bubble! When Mei's mom thought Mei was getting her period, she told Mei that it was expected, was nothing to be embarrassed about, and tried to give her everything she needed to get through it. It's still something that no one talks about, but we should because it's part of our everyday lives and crucial to the health of people who experience them. Luckily when I was a kid, I had a book about it, and my parents (them being trained as physicians) told me about all the changes my body would go through, so when the time came, I wasn't afraid, and I never felt uncomfortable asking questions. But there are some kids out there who never learn about it. I think Turning Red will become a good conversation starter for kids. :)

I would love to see a sequel about Ming's back story, her relationship with her Mother and how she met Jin. I think there could be some pretty meaty stuff there. A sequel is sadly unlikely though, as Domee Shi, the director, said she'd got the issues of conflict between Mother and daughter "out of her system." A pity because I think this story has a lot more potential.

NYC has Little Italy and Chinatown right next to each other. If you go to Canal Street, you can see the mixture of Italian and Chinese shops. Most of these communities developed in the 19-20th centuries in the US when there were large amounts of migration from Europe and Asia. You wouldn’t find an “Englishtown” area because Canada and the east coast of the US were English colonies. That’s why some states/counties, & cities are named after English people and places (NJ & NY also kept a lot of Dutch names and influences so you will find both)

Eyy great reaction, though I did want to point out that the period sync IS a myth, or at the most charitable, has no scientific proof for it. It's a misconception due to a misunderstanding of irregular cycles and the math of coincidence. For instance, if one woman starts her period every 28 days, and another begins hers every 22, naturally, there's eventually going to be a point in time where they "sync up" or overlap for a couple months, especially since the actual bleeding can last up to a week for some, so plenty of time to intersect. But anyways, it's cool to see you guys enjoy the movie and very casually talk about topics that a LOT of people are getting weirdly angry about. Fr it's bizarre to see such a backlash to... a kids movie talking about things kids experience??
@Urube23
@Urube23 2 жыл бұрын
It's.. not a myth. When I was living at home, I would always sync up with my mom. Always. Like when she got hers, I would get mine right after. Then a couple months after I moved out, I noticed we got out of sync. So yes, it is a thing.

How did I only now come across you guys? wow! I LOVED the way you addressed the bullshit taboo around periods, it's important to know what's happening, even men, single fathers should be able to answer questions once their daughter is panicking in the bathroom, but you made important points. I interpreted the red panda as like.. the hormones, bloating, sadness, and rage-like anger right before and during a period. I also like to entertain the idea that all the grandmother's and mother's "sealed" panda could be any type of birth control that stops periods entirely, tubes tied, menopause, etc. Not sure if it was on purpose but girls also wear their sweaters around their waist like Mei did most of the movie, if they've bled through their pants in public.

Vox did a great video summarizing why Chinatowns called "The surprising reason behind Chinatown's aesthetic". I mean it's not that surprising, spoiler it's anti Chinese racism. But basically it was a bunch of different factors that happen to come together at the right point in time to give rise to branding Chinatown and using a specific not particularly Chinese aesthetic to achieve a specific idea. Great watch to learn about the subject. In general most major international cities have similar areas most associated with specific ethnic groups. It's mostly because the branding of "Chinatown" that means they're often the most easily identifiable. Other noteworthy communities include (but are definitely not limited to) London's Southhall, Kreuzberg in Germany, Brighton Beach in New York, Little Havana in Miami and Macau in China.
