With a big winter storm in the forecast, we figured this might be our last chance to explore Kings Canyon National Park before the mountains are covered in white. There’s something so special about the Sierra Nevada, maybe it’s the big granite peaks or those pristine alpine lakes. Whatever it may be, this backpacking season has been so good for the soul but we’re ready to see these beautiful wilderness areas cloaked in a blanket of snow.

@@codyandvictoria yes it is! I love being up in the mountains and seeing little native trout swimming around! Gonna have to get you a little fly rod to carry in your pack and next time try to catch one or two! Adds a little spice to the trip to catch a fish that most people don't know even are in that little stream and most of those fish will never see people!

Hey Cody, great video! I live in Bishop, so I really enjoyed seeing the Bishop Pass trail through your lens. Its all covered in snow now! Its a small thing, but you should try to avoid camping on any sort of plants, even small grass. The ecosystem up in the Sierra is very fragile. Stoked to see your channel move towards backpacking!

Did this in July 2017. There was still a fair bit of snow everywhere, and a lot of melting water from further up the range creating some sketch snow bridges. The switchback up towards the pass was completely covered in snow. We went up the least strenuous path we could find, and took an hour or so. Super intense. Stayed in dusy basin for two nights then hiked back out. So beautiful, and great memories.

When striking camp, always leave the tent staked into the ground; remove the poles first and thus you reduce the potential for sail effect.

Thanks for sharing, brings back some great memories. When my dad was in his early 20's he would backpack into Inyo National Forest. Then when his three boys were old enough, he want to share the adventure with us. So in the late 60's he took us over Kearsarge Pass for a week in to the back country. I think I was all of 12 or 13 at the time. Given our ages he had a guide with pack horses take us in and drop us off. After a week we packed out. The following year we went over Taboose Pass to Bench Lake. Great times for sure and fishing was good too.

Looks like good times. Piece of advice, in windy conditions like that you might want to throw one of your backpacks in the tent while you breakdown the tent. It'll save you a lot of headache or chasing down your tent.

You camped in Dusy Basin across from Isosceles Peak, 12,382 and Columbine Peak, 12,662 ft. Gorgeous area! While hiking up south fork of Bishop Creek, when you passed Long Lake, the northern peak of the Palisades-Mt. Agassiz, 13,899 ft.-was looming above; pointed, massive, intimidating and black! The view from the summit is incredible! The peak is Class 2-3. When you arose that second morning and you were having breakfast, the view behind you was r to l: North Palisade, 14,249 ft, Starlight, 14,200+ ft., Winchell, Thunderbolt, Peak, 14,009 ft., and Winchell, 13,781 ft. Thunderbolt was the last 14er to be climbed in the Sierras. It’s dangerous and minimum Class 4 with the summit block minimum Class 5! Your last night had gorgeous alpenglow on Agassiz. Where you were is one of my favorite places in the Sierra! There are fantastic climbs there like a hard-to-find Class 3 route up North Pal, Thunderbolt Pass also leads to Polemonium and a difficult route up Mt. Sill, 14,162 ft. In the opposite direction, you can continue on down thru Dusy Basin to LeConte Canyon, Evolution Valley and Humphrey’s Basin and the JMT (North over Muir Pass then out over Paiute Pass... great loop).
