I love lazy gardening!! Compost bins and worm bins and soil amendments are all active ways to build soil, but let’s talk about two of my favorite passive, easy ways to increase soil fertility and build humus. Let permaculture do the work of building healthy rich organic matter.

Thank you for this info. You are great at explaining permaculture in a language I can understand! I’m a newbie KZbin gardener in zone 3 Saskatchewan Canada working hard to incorporate permaculture techniques into my garden. Happy Gardening!

We couldn't imagine not chopping and dropping. We use a tithonia species that bioaccumulates nutrients from the soil. They grow very fast (25 ft tall sunflowers!), producing a LOT of biomass that we feed to back our food plants. They also act as a screen between our property and our neighbors. The flowers are also gorgeous and attract lots of pollinators and provide cut flowers for us. We also heavily mulch our paths using municipal mulch. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Thanks for your videos! I'm in the beginning stages of turning our backyard into permaculture. It was only dirt when we moved in. Your videos are so inspiring.💕

Never thought of using paths to make soil. I’ve got wood chips down over landscaping cloth right now. Planning to remove that in a few years when I’m sure the grass under it is dead. I was planning on adding more chips over time as the ones I have now break down. But I like the idea of using it to help improve the soil too. That’s an awesome idea. Also my neighbor has rabbits and has offered me the use of manure. 😊

We do our paths similar to what you do with the addition of grass clippings, straw, etc. Walking around the paths while working in the garden aids in breaking down the wood chips simply by walking on them.

I really appreciate the quality and quantity of videos you have been uploading recently. I am quite sure the algorithm will notice too ;-) Greetings from south west Germany where we have almost an Oregonian climate (7b/8a with severe drought during the summer)

I love wood chip paths. I need to find a good source for chips. My yard is quite flat with some low spots in corners so I'm not sure how to be able to move water in the way that you mention.

Loved it! What kind of chicken is that dark one that was staring at you near the end?

How are you able to grow plants in the chicken run without the chickens eating it all?

Thank you for your question Kendra. I have a couple videos on it and I plan to do more but two of the key elements are rotating the chickens through various areas so they aren’t anywhere long enough to be incredibly destructive, and growing chicken-resistant plants in the run
