Note: I accidentally said that the Snowdon Mountain Railway was in Switzerland when it’s actually in Wales. It was mainly cause the basis of the engines are from Switzerland and I got that mixed up with where there actually from, sorry for the confusion 😅

It was the Reverend himself that saw diesels as two faced. Which makes me think Chris was using James as a stand in for his father, trying to teach him diesels aren't bad and that he liked diesels himself

My theory for the rws specifically is that two faced engines have a some sort of muscle that allows them to close their eyes tightly and then they can open their eyes on the other side. I know its a bit stupid but I kinda like this theory because it stops theories about the fact if an engine looking in one direction and 180 degress in the other.

Toby’s class having two faces is such a cursed idea… one which snuck its way into some illustrations in Toby, Trucks, and Trouble…

chris also stated in the story out of puff that the engines faces open like smoke box doors although it’s the only mention of at and they never illustrate it.

Mighty Mac is more so the engine embodiment of conjoined twins than two faced. But nonetheless good video

For me, two faces only works best on Farley and Garratt Engines, and my explanation for them is they're conjoined twins.

My theory for toby and diesels faces is that they chose which side there face is on or they move there face to the side the driver is driving on

I think Toby's case can be explain as toby's face can switch his face to appear on front (near the funnel) or backside (Like "Toby's MegaTrain") by his consciousness and awareness or his crew's control.

I think on the diesels and Culdee engines have their eyes facing the direction their reverser is facing (forward / reverse). In my headcanon the non Sodor diesels (CoBo, Derby & Matlock) I just use their lights as their eyes rather than full Thomas styled faces. After all their real life counterparts don't have faces but their headlights look like eyes.

For the Culdee Fell engines, which have two faces, only the front face does the actual talking, while the back face simply mirrors the facial expressions of the front face. For example, the back face can change expressions, blink, and scream, but its lips don't move; instead, they sync with the expressions of the front face.

Snowdon is in Wales. The engines were built in Switzerland.

If Toby The Tram Engine *did* have two faces (including the goof in “Toby’s Megatrain”), this just works a little bit as Toby is the “chaotic neutral” character as he really doesn’t pick sides and watches others fail for his own amusement. So “technically” Toby does have a second face but he just chose not to reveal it……unless for joking purposes only e.g. Double Header/Time For Trouble

For the diesels I think I have a head-canon Now we will be going out of topic so you have been warned:for example let’s take the floor from i.i.i because in the episode "out of body experience" he explains that he pops and his face disappears and he pops into the place that he wants to be, now you may be thinking "what does this have to do with thomas-" LET ME GET TO THAT! So I imagine that once the diesels like BoCo, daisy, bear etc arrive at the end of the line their face goes pop and it appears on the other side of their bodies

Honestly I still think that the culdee fell engines only need one face It should be on the back since that's why that's where they can see more Although in tenders and turntables the narrator says "tank engines like Thomas don't need some tables because they can see what's behind them" or something like that and since all the culdee fell engines are tank engines then maybe they can see through their backs anyway? I don't know I just prefer them with one face and I specially prefer them with one face on their smokebox door

actually Tank Engines don't need turntables because they can go just as fast backwards as they can go forward (most of the time-)

I included a similar idea into my headcanon, the CFR engines have their faces positioned on their cabs since their coaches take lookout on the uphill journey, technically making them cab-forward locomotives.

@@jamesthomas5109A double fairly would definitely have a face at each end no matter what gauge, I’m not too sure about a Garrett though since it could go either way

@@the_north_westener Garratt's are a really weird case, because not only do they have the two ends to contend with, but they also have that central smokebox door. I'm somewhat thankful for BWBA canonizing Garratt's via Kwaku (that Kenyan one) but it's still just really cursed to imagine.

Just in my opinion I think the Diesels only have one face, in the mountain engines do you have two faces but I think each face is their own personality end the back face of the mountain engines tells the front face if there's anything on the line basically it's like two people working together

Hate to be the type to go ''erm actually'', but Toby DOES have a back face in some of Chris' books. Don't know why, since it's inconsistent with his faceless back seen in Wilbert's books. Also I just noticed BoCo's face is oddly inconsistent in the RWS. Some illustrations show him with yellow on just his lower face, but others (in the same book no less) have his entire face covered in yellow.

I've never think I've had problems with engines having two faces at either end. My only thought on the matter is how they see the world through their eyes. Do they just keep one end closed whilst the other stays opened unless they want to switch visions, or do they just see from both ends all the time and their vision is trippy af?
