We went on the Appalachian Trail in boy scouts, and we walked about 43 miles in 4 days, and 3 of the days were almost hurricane weather and we were like 20 miles in the middle of nowhere and shelter wasn't until the next camp that was about 11 miles away on day 2. It was a crazy journey, people going low on food trading oatmeal, uh, not me (it was me). And people screaming at night due to all the water caving in peoples tents, and don't get me started with the reverse gas chamber. If you had a hammock and slept in it, you were basically asking to be drowned, even the zip up ones, because they don't zip up all the way and the water still seeps through, one kid almost drowned because he zipped it up and supposedly woke up after he said he had a dream of drowning, and he wouldn't have made it if he didn't kick around like a toddler having a spastic fit. cause he ripped/untied his hammock strings and he fell stomache-to-earth. And here we are making plans for Winters trip on the trail...

@@funcooker3029 I heard this horror story on trail last year of a woman in the Smokies. There you have to sleep in the shelters. This woman was so sick, it woke her up in the middle of the night. She jumped up and started running to the privy, she turned right towards the shelter water source instead of left on the trail to the privy. Before she could correct herself she was at the water source and threw up in it. She poisoned the water source with norovirus. I met so many people on trail that either experienced it or knew someone who had.

Pro-tip for that starting section: If you park on the other side of Springer instead of at Dawson, you can leave your pack in your car, hike like 3 miles up to the top, and thus begin the trail and hike back down to your pack. Saves like 10 miles of up and down terrain and no pack. Too little, too late I suppose.

These guys are probably not gonna read this since this is an old video, but I just wanna say: I've got so much respect for these two for doing this for 5 days. This is a hundred times more difficult for them than for fit people, not only because they don't have the heart and lung capacity of a seasoned hiker, but mostly because they have to carry between 40 to 90 lbs of additional weight, which I can't even imagine. These guys are damn tough, and they manage to keep their spirits high and laugh it off even when they actually feel horrible. I wish I could do that. On another note, probably you shouldn't have used the toilet and instead just dug a hole somewhere to take a dump in. Toilets like those are usually sprawling with viral infections, I'd keep as far away from those as possible. I'm 100% sure that he got his infection then and there. If you are going to use a public toilet, make sure to at least use hand sanitizer afterwards if possible, though that's probably not gonna save you either.
