It is a common stereotype in Sweden that all of our Finnish brothers carry knives at all times. While this is perhaps overstating the case one can not argue that they make very nice blades in the classical style. In fact, I believe their more flared handle design is slightly better than our own oval tradition. A very nice video and a very clear explanation of what ultra HC means. I've come to expect this from you but it is still worth noting that you make some of the best blade reviews on YT.

I had to re temper the blade with a torch because the edge was way to brittle, but after doing that this knife became extraordinary. This handle fits my hand like a glove. Other than that small glitch this knife is remarkable. This knife is scary sharp, bravo.

I purchased the Spyderco Puukko a couple weeks back and I couldnt be happier with it. I love the simplicity of the Puukko design and the minimalistic approach. Great review as always. Keep up the great work.

Elegant simplicity--I like these knives very much. It is no wonder Puukkos are so popular in the Bushcraft community--a design based on outdoor use that has been refined for hundreds of years should obviously work well. Scandinavian products generally seem to be high quality, without necessarily costing a fortune. Thanks for sharing.

I'm quite happy to see such high quality, hand made cutlery is still present for a relatively low price. Such an extremely special steel like that of the Hunting Knife seems akin to those steels used in custom blades, at least in its lack of prominence. Quite frankly, the quality of the knives shown is something the world just doesn't see all that often anymore, and their beauty seems second to none, and for their price I'd say the quality exceeds what they go for.

I'm an old italian hiker and hunter and own a Roselli Carpenter knife from over 50 years. I used it for skinning, making meals carving wood etc. and it never failed me. Today in Italy the only problem is its price: about 150,00 euro. How can this be justified? The steel is worth 5,00 euro maximum and being myself an amateur knifemaker it takes to me about 3 hours to build one sheath enclosed starting from scratch; if properly tooled I could do one in about one hour . Taking into account that in Italy a knifemaker in a Factory costs about 15,00 euro per hour the total cost handmade, leather of the sheath included, is a naximum of 25,00 euros. Besides the quality of manufacturing declined in the years: my own very old Carpenter has a FLAT EDGE perfect for the task of slicing but difficult to grind in my personal experience, while the new ones have SCANDI EDEGE, easier to manufacture but much less efficient in the field. So with less quality of the product and more ease to manufacture, where the 150,00 euros come from!

Great, comprehensive, well presented review.....thankyou. BTW Do you have any idea what the method for fixing the blade to the handle is? I never heard of anyone having a problem with the blades on these knives 'getting loose', i guess its just a little counter-intuitive if you're accustomed to full tang designs. That said the puukko design has been giving good service to outdoorsmen for a very long time and I guess the scandinavians know a thing or two by now whe it comes to building them right

The sheaths are not cheap. Or cheaply made. Pictures do not do justice. I kinda thought the same way til I bought a couple sometime ago. Very pleased.

I own the carpenters Knife with UHC steel since 6 years. It was a present from my finnsich Grandmother. I can say, that it has very great cutting abilities. The blade can be brought to an extreme level of sharpness and contains the sharpness very long. I have used it the first 2 years as a knife for every purpose. The last 4 years i have only been using it for wood works. It is the best knife for wood works i've ever had (I've had a lot good Knifes). Only the sheath is not good, because after a few years it didn't hold the knife very good anymore.

Just but a little Firesteel (or a piece of fatwood) behind the stitching on the backside of the sheath, so the knife shhould be thight again. Greetings from Tirol

thanks for the review! i really want one. They look beautiful and elegant and simple. Hey but quick carving tip, you're 'sweeping' your strokes. try and to aim the blade and push it straight in that direction. if you want to do 'scallop' cuts then use the curved part of the blade. still you'll want to do a much more shallow sweep. This is for carving economy as well as keeping your knife edge from rounding over time or even getting small chips in it. keep it up!!!

In finnish stabbing someone is called puukottaa. So the puukko knives have quite a big influence on finnish people and the language.

At least here in Finland, the notion is that the guard serves no valid purpose. The closer to the blade you can get your hand, the more power and more precision you have in the cut. Very fine work is done between the edge and the thumb and a guard would only get in the way.

Love Roselli knives, but those sheathes looks pretty bad. I more like Finnish traditional sheath or something more like a hunting / bushcraft style. Unfortunately I don't have any of Roselli knives, because they are pretty expensive and hard to get. My dream is two Roselli knives:R120 Grandfather´s knife and R130 Grandmother´s knife and maybe the bearclaw too. They are my all time favorite knives and I hope to get one of them some great day! Scandi grinds are some of the easiest to install on a blank... Stick tangs are likewise very easy to fix into a wood handle.. What im trying to say here is that these knives are very simple in design, construction, and execution .. Even a novice can assemble a rat tail Mora, Lauri , or Kellam Blank into birch or Micarta block and then shape the handle.. "The Unessential is Detrimental" well i will add that "Tradiionally" these very basic plain Jane Puukko knives were "INEXPENSIVE" ... That knife just isnt handsome enough to warrant paying ten times the price of a Mora Companion ... I mean if "Functionality" is the aesthetic we are going for then a Mora is all we need here... For what these Roselli knives go for they should incorporate thicker blade stock , higher scandi grinds going halfway up the blade in order to maintain a 9dps zero scandi angle, and maybe a bit more attactive handle material .. If you compare this to the look of the old Finnish Hackman Tapio knives or the new Spyderco Puukko it comes in a distant second... And both of those are still "Simple" looking knives..

Actually the definition of puukko is nowhere that strict. Despite what some knife "experts" mights say, since people like that want to categorize things. A puukko is actually any general purpose knife, that could reasonably be used for woodwork or closely resembles a knife like that. The word roughly translates as "woodtool". It doesn't even have to be a Finnish knife to be a puukko. Even a seax is called väkipuukko = "powerknife". And for example, where I'm from, people call the totally tang-less carpet knives mattopuukko. The generic word for a knife in Finnish is veitsi. That's used for knifes like butter-knives, kitchen knives, hunting knifes etc. But even if you said:"I need a puukko", someone could hand you a bread knife for example.

I love the traditional materials used in the Roselli and I personally despise plastic and other BS materials found in so-called "modern knives". They re usually butt ugly and underperform. I also much prefer the simple lines and proven design of the Roselli. You can have the "modern" BS many other knives and the materials they use, including their steels.

That UHC steel is useless! If you hit a bone, you get chips in the edge, and after one deer you get serrated edge what isn't sharp and you cant get rid of serrations just by sharpening on stone! So to me this hunter now is a wall hanger! Carpenter is great knife, really recommend to anyone who wants to have a good medium sized knife for cooking, bushcrafting, any camp job.... of course its not good for splitting some logs, but for those you better have some large and heavy leuku! Any way great review!
