People who have never put a tent away have NO concept. At least it wasn't wet!! Good job!

The thought of having to fold it up almost put me off getting it out the bag in the first place. Thank you.

As a Girl Guide many moons ago I learned to erect and then pack up big ex-army bell tents. I'm fairly certain that if I had to pack one up now I'd not have a clue.

What I love about this video is we are all just people doing our thing. I'm sitting here hand sewing a little dress for my daughter. My first hand sewing complete project I have ever tried.. And you are sewing (mending) a tent. The amazing thing is that people have been sewing for thousands or hundreds of thousands (maybe more) years and sewing fills a human need. We need shelter and coverings to protect us from the elements. It is easy to forget that fashion and in this case, a tent brings us back to our most basic needs and elements that we all have in common.

I bet the dress looks gorgeous. I love seeing. I’m just starting to see a quilt for my bed. It’s better than darning socks, or altering clothes my daughter keeps buying in the charity shops. Here’s to your next project 💖❤️❤️

That is a lovely way to put it. sometimes I feel my job is very frivolous and I should find away to help people more with what I do. But equally its nice to be able to use my work in a helpful way even if its just to keep a 50 year solidly built tent still usable, and that is a very satisfying feeling. I bet your daughter is going to love her dress well done.

Watching this machine work IS very interesting. Your mend looks terrific. That is one VERY LARGE tent. When you were sewing the manual zig-zag to close the hole, I thought, "She is extremely patient; way more patient than me." Good work!

I’m glad you enjoyed the working of the machine. It did require patience to fix, but it belongs to a friend and as it tore on our watch so to speak I did want to make the repair worthwhile.

Another box ticked on the "small sewing repairs" project list. Looks like it was a perfect day for it. Maneuvering such a weighty thing and keeping that zig-zag tight... Kudos!

Well this video sent me down an internet rabbit hole. There is probably a WW2 US Army Field Manual for tent repairs? Yes, there is FM 10-16. But then I found out you can be a Clothing Repair Specialist of which there are four grades. There are instructors training manuals and everything. Never seen anyone reference those when talking about historical sewing techniques. And I stumbled across a bunch of other stuff like FM 10-13 if on food preparation which has lots of information on can sizes and what was supplied in cans - like hamburgers. It also reminded me about the old Bell System Practices where there was a manual for everything. Not just technical telephony subjects but ones on the use of a hammer or the use of a screwdriver or the way the grass should be mowed outside of switching building and equipment huts.

I am glad you had an enjoyable trip down a rabbit hole. there are definitely British army manuals of equivalent subjects and army lorries kitted out with sewing machines for repairs of tents and parachutes.

It certainly chomps through all the layers well. I did find out it was set to a very slow speed and I could speed it up if I wanted, but it certainly made it easy to control at the slower speed

I loved watching this, as I always do your videos, such fun! Not only do we get to see the Marvelous MacKenzie in action, sewing and wrestling with a tent that is perhaps as large as my little apartment here in the Netherlands, but we get to watch that wonderful machine walking through some very tough canvas, on what appears to be a lovely day. Win win all the way. Thank you for the show. :) I had to laugh, as we are just getting ready to go camping ourselves, only we "bike camp," so our tent is about the size as some people's refrigerator! Happy camping!

Hello, I am so glad you enjoyed the video, it was very satisfying chomping through the fabric, yes its quite an excessive tent for two people as I believe its a ten person tent for the army when it was made many years ago. Happy Camping to you too.

Thank you, as I am working away from home at the moment my weekends are spent doing my washing and re packing to go away again, I find myself wearing the Lounge Pajamas as it means I don't have to get something that could be worn at work dirty at the weekend. And yes I had probably just planned to have a look at the tent and then we got stuck in and it seemed silly to go and get properly dressed once started.

Oh my word. That's a big sewing project. I must say I never thought about bring my little home machine outdoors to sew, much less an industrial machine, and I never thought to mend a tent. Of course we don't have any tents at the moment. Out of curiosity, exactly how large is this tent. It looked huge to me.
@stanceymackenzie
@stanceymackenzie 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, I feel I was at an advantage in that the machine belongs to a car upholsterer who was using one of our sheds to work in left the machine there so we only had to wheel it out. I don't think we would have got the tent up the stairs and it would be much harder to sew on my industrial without the walking foot. I am rubbish at square footage so not sure of the tents official size but its a 1950s army tent designed for ten men. we find it is very roomy for two and one dog.

Yet another delightful video 🥰 And the repair looks really nice! I mended a tarp last summer, which was definitely also a two person job. My old machine was already done with fine sewing, so I taped the rips with duct tape and sewed through the tape 🙈 Not pretty at all but it worked great. Will still be keeping the machine for future tarp repairs 💪

We repaired a second tent after this one where the holes had already been duct taped over snd we also just patched straight over the tape as it was already holding them shut nicely. I’m glad you enjoyed the video

This was great. Unfortunately you reminded me that I have to repair my partners tent, which the mice got at in the shed 😕. I only have a domestic sewing machine but it's a much smaller tent and I don't think it's as heavyweight canvas. Otherwise it's back to hand sewing. Fingers crossed.

I hope you can machine through all the layers ok and do not have to resort to hand sewing. We had to repair a second tent after this one and I think all the holes in that one where mice related from storage unfortunately

That's quite a machine!! Is it vintage, or just really heavy duty? I'm particularly amused that when I patch my trousers it looks pretty similar, although I usually baste the rip shut first with what I call a shoelace stitch so everything stays flat.
@stanceymackenzie
@stanceymackenzie Жыл бұрын
Hello, its not vintage, although its possibly second hand, it is set up for heavy duty upholstery with a walking foot great for leather, vinyl and canvas.
