Vivian Vance's reactions are priceless. Vance's dry delivery of "I have sufficient." is one of my favorite moments in all of I LOVE LUCY (and that's saying a lot.) And Lucille Ball's embarrassed attempts to squelch Ethel's rebellion and brilliant.

So glad to see Ethel getting a bestie besides Lucy
As a young woman Vivian DID live in Albuquerque, where she managed to become the star player at 'The Little Theatre" there, her biggest triumph was in THE TRIAL OF MARY DUGAN. In 1932, her fellow players sent Viv to NYC where she was Ethel Merman's understudy for the musical smash ANYTHING GOES in 1934. (She actually played Reno Sweeney 2 or 3 times). Born Vivian Jones in the (still) tiny hamlet of Cherryvale, KS. She took her adopted surname from an acting mentor named Vance Randolph. Vivian received the first ever Best supporting actress Emmy award for her playing the role of Ethel Mertz (1954). Mary Wickes said of Viv: "the best second banana in the business"

High praise coming from a talent like Mary Wickes. Vivian Vance understudied Ethel Merman?! Wow! That’s impressive!

Ethel didn't just throw shade at Lucy during this luncheon, she threw the whole damn tree. "I have sufficient" was the topper. Legend has it that Vivian Vance ad libbed the line during rehearsals because she was getting queasy.

One of my fave episodes! LOL! I heard Vivian say in an old interview form I think the late 60's that she add-liibed that famous line, "I have sufficient..." LOL!

The Lucy Show was much better, and Mary Jane Croft's wacky character that she perfected in her many years on The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet, made her the ideal replacement for Vivian Vance, after Viv quit the show.
@Biggems4 Жыл бұрын
it absolutely was not lol.

Mary Jane was very good and enjoyable BUT NO ONE can replace the great Vivian Vance. I liked Ann Sothern as the Countess !! LOL!!
@executivedecision6141 Жыл бұрын
@@markwhitman9029 True... but as the straight-woman to Lucy's insanity, in the roles of both Ethel and later Viv, Vivian Vance was the voice of reason and logic. Mary Jane Croft on The Lucy Show was somewhere in between both characters. She wasn't as wacky as Clara Randolph in her many years on "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet".
@gretchennelson705610 ай бұрын
I liked Mary Jane Croft very much but she couldn’t hold a candle to Vivian Vance

I thought The Lucy Show was boring. It was just a lot of recycled gags from the 50's. Here's Lucy was the same nonsense too.
