James Hetfield’s parents were deeply religious and didn’t allow him to express himself or have his own thoughts or opinions, basically repressed him. He lost them early in his life and he didn’t feel capable of being out in the real world because he had never experienced it being sheltered by his parents and their religion. One of the few if not only song that is pure anger by James. The whole album is very deep and has so much meaning. Great music and great lyrics.

Living in Panama the first time that I started listening to this album in 1988 I was blown away, but the song Dyer's Eve was so fast, loud, double bass drumming, and the most aggressive thrash metal song to put on And Justice For all album gracias Dana's Faith🇵🇦🇺🇸🎸🎤💿

Metallica has been and always will be my number one favorite metal band. They really know how to let the music speak and they write with pure raw emotion. Very much enjoyed this!!

This album was very personal for Metallica. Since it the 1st one they did after bassest cliff Burton died . And yes they had a lot of frustration and anger .

It's definitely a powerful, emotional song and deeply personal for James. Everything about it is filled with pain and rage. It's arguably the thrashiest song on Justice. It's hilarious seeing you two headbang at halftime. But you're young, you'll get there!

You guys should Really Really Really REALLY should check out To Live Is To Die! Off same album very powerful song played and written in Memory of Cliff Burt/Original Bassist.
@thomaslazarek68352 жыл бұрын
There is a lyric in the song Blackened. "Deadly nicotine. Kills what might have been". This is a reference to James' mom, who died of lung cancer from smoking.
@thomaslazarek68352 жыл бұрын
Great reaction. You two nailed it. A favorite of mine. The anger and rage in the lyrics and music are so powerful. Two all time favorite lyrics of mine, "No guarantee, it's life as is" and "Ripping wounds in me that never heal." The song is based on James Hetfield's younger years. His parents were Christian scientists and didn't believe in science. His father left them and his mother died of cancer. Due to her religious believes, she refused medical treatment. So as a teenager, James had to slowly watch his mom die of cancer. That's the short version. Anyone feel free to add more details.

Love this song. It reminds me of their earlier stuff, but better produced. I saw them live back in the 90s. Great show. I think G&R opened for them.

Not too long and you'll be seeing them live! Enjoy and take care :) As I do not really follow Metallica I am pretty much in the same boat as you, hearing it for the first time. Yet another powerful track, with a wealth of emotion bubbling up from within. Like you I had decent parents so cannot fully relate, but can understand the situation and the frustrations of it.

If you can get close to the stage and flash a sign saying RØDGRØD MED FLØDE! I'm sure it will put a big grin on Lars' face. In Danish it tranlates to "red (berry) compot with sweet cream" and it's the ultimate tongue-twister phrase for non-danes. Lars will most certainly not expect this in California. Have great fun at the concert, and as usual: Don't forget your ear plugs.

James Hetfield was raised by christian science believers... strict upbringing... abuse... physical punishments... His father left the family as a boy and left him w/ abandonment issues - it was worsened when his mom died from cancer after refusing treatment for her beliefs, while he was a teen. James recalled as a kid, he couldn't make friends w/ kids his school cos he was barred from health class (they called him a 'freak' as a result...) I remember hearing this song at 15, thinking, "Why was he so angry at his parents?" At 27, I knew exactly why... I was going thru the same abuse, alienation, strict punishments... as a kid.
