Great review, my wife and I have been using Dutch's "double hammock hooks" for over a year. It works great for us. The tarp is where we have issuers. I've experimented with 3 different tarps. We were on a trip this weekend, Friday night I used a Hammockgear Winterdream CF tarp. I want it to cover all the hammock including the spreader bar. The problem with that is I have to hang the tarp to flat, it doesn't block wind or sideways rain. I have a friend that makes hammocks and tarps, he's going to try to make me a custom tarp with a spreader bar. Thanks for sharing
@sintax778 жыл бұрын
+Greg Rinehart Thanks for the feedback, Greg. I don't have an HG winter palace, but was wondering how it (or similar sizes tarps) mighr be with thos setup. I'm thinking I may have to do a combination of shortening the bar along with a wider non-hex tarp.

It's pretty cool. Sara's pretty excited about it. Of course, there's no way she's going out for a winter trip, haha - so we'll probably be waiting until spring to take it out for a legit trip in double mode. I'm planning to use a single one with the solid top cover on my upcoming winter solo though.

@sintax77 Wonderfully clear demo and explanation. Two quick questions if you please: 1. I agree with your Rectangular Tarp recommendation, yet what size tarp would you recommend for the 'double dutch' setup with two 10ft hammocks? Length? Width? 2. Do you recommend the tarp style with 'doors' with such a set up? Thank you kindly.
@johnlord83378 жыл бұрын
You got me on this one! Unique design! The heavier husband will have the lower hammock, while shooting the wife into the atmosphere, and face pushed into the cover tarp. And if one gets out of the hammock, the other person is going to spin around and down, and get whacked by the other hammock gear .... I would suggest that the spreader bar has 2 legs to the ground keeping the hammocks stable.

I'm glad to see someone trying the side by side hammock arrangement. I have brainstormed over the last two years trying to come up with an idea to use when my son and I go Hammock Camping in The Boundary Waters. The problem with this system is that when one camper leaves the hammock the other drops far toward the ground. I'm trying to engineer A system that allows for two trees and to Hammocks but does not have the same problem. Any ideas?

I'm still trying to decide if I want to get a hammock or not. One concern I have is when you get your hammock and tarp set up and it starts to rain. Is there a way to keep the rain from running down the traps and get you wet while you're in the hammock? Just seems like this would be a problem. Thanks and be safe out there.

Someone asked me about what tarp to use with the 2 hammocks spreader bar setup. I can't remember what you said maybe the Hennessy? My new Dream Hammock came today and I'll test it this weekend at PRNL. Also someone else asked about drones at National Parks. Far as I know drones are illegal at all NP'S. I always go to you for the good ?'s
@sintax777 жыл бұрын
+uptrail71 My Hennessy tarp didn't work too well, due to the Hex shape, but according to Dutch, a 10' x 11' rectangular tarp will do the trick. JRB sells one, but I haven't personally tried it. Yes, NP's passed a reg banning operation of drones within their boundaries. Wilderness areas, *Natnl Rec areas, National Forests are still ok as of now (in general, at least) EDIT: Natnl Rec Areas are actually under the jurisdiction of the NPS, so they are off limits as of 2014 as well.

Thanks! I have been thinking about a drone to make better videos, but the new laws could make it hard. Some state parks may be doing the same. Michigan has made it illegal to fly near prisons and some other areas that I'm not sure of yet. When will it end?

I'm thinking of doing the retrofit as you mentioned. but I'm curious what length you use for your straps in the video?
@sintax778 жыл бұрын
The straps seen in this video are 15', which seems to be the default length that's he's sending out with the Chameleons. Honestly, I rarely use that much strap, but they're so light that I'm going to keep them that length. It will come in handy for the occasional huge tree.
@nickbaron74628 жыл бұрын
sintax77 yeah I noticed they were quite long. I usually run 6' straps in conjunction with my whoopie slings. I'm truly digging the rig though. my wife would like to join me hammock camping but doesn't like to be in her own setup and once she saw this I think it sold her on the idea.

@sintax778 жыл бұрын
It hasn't been an issue for me, no. But to be fair, I usually don't experience that with any of my various hammocks, so I my experience may be a bit biased.
@emjay05078 жыл бұрын
I have 2 Half-Wit hammocks from Dutch which my son and I use together often and we always are looking for a very tight triangle of trees to set up from. This looks good and would cancel that need, I actually like the fact the suspension is easily disconnected from the hammock body as well. Shame that Dutch didn't have a 2x Sets of 2x Beetles and 1x spreader bar option in his Kickstarter. Being here in OZ, postage is a killer for just one item. Q: what is it like as one enters or leaves one of the hammocks, is the other dropping alot (making night time toilet breaks difficult without waking the other)? PS: I have always refrained from using 2 tarps and have a 3m x 3m square tarp that works a treat.
@sintax778 жыл бұрын
The empty hammock definitely raises up a bit once someone gets in the other one. When first trying it out we felt like we both had to coordinate getting in at once, but I quickly learned that wasn't really the case. I ended up getting in & out several times during filming while Sara stayed put, and it didn't cause any considerable issues. I think it looks a bit more extreme than it really is - plus we had Sara's hammock pitched a little too low, so with some extra adjustment it would probably be even less of an issue.

@MrDaddyFatSacks697 жыл бұрын
From what I could see from Sean's response to Kevin Cumberton (look below), he said he heard good things about Jacks R Better 11'x10' tarp. From the description of the video the spreader bar is 36in (but you can purchase a smaller one from Dutch or cut your existing one as Sean mentioned in the video to fit a smaller tarp). The tarp shown in the video is 12'x10' (according to the description). Two tarps that you may consider looking at (that are not hexagonal/cat cut) that could work in addition to the JRB 11'x10' would be the Hammock Gear Dyneema Fiber (cuben fiber) Palace Tarp and/or the Warbonnet Cloudburst. The HG tarp can be ordered in a 10',11', or 12' ridgeline and has a width of 10'4" as well as having doors. The WB tarp measures 11'x10' and is made for their RidgeRunner hammocks as it is rectangular cut, and has tie outs on the tarp to increase the interior hanging room. Now WB does not state the width of the RR hammock on their website, but Derek Hansen from the Ultimate Hang states the dimensions of the RR are, "Pole Width(head):36.5in.__Pole Width(foot):29.625in"(Derek Hansen, 2013). Now depending on how much money you are willing to spend on fabric (Cuben fiber vs silpoly vs silnylon), what season you plan on going (JRB & WB are 3 season while HG would be 4 season as it has doors), and if you want additional tieouts. The price for each ranges: WB Cloudburst ranges from $115-$140; JRB 11'x10' ~$145; and the HG Dyneema Fiber Palace Tarp is ~$415. Thats just from my research, hope that helps! since I'm new to hammock camping.... whats your opinion on a newbie using this set up?
@sintax777 жыл бұрын
+Kickrocks W/Kim I think this Chameleon would be just fine for a beginner. As far as hanging double, it may be best to experiment with individual hammocks at first - just to keep things simple and to learn your individual preferences. Honestly though, even the double set up is pretty straight forward. This video is actually the first time we ever tried a double setup. The main challenge is finding an appropriately sized tarp.

Thanks, Nikad. Yes, I think you're right. While watching the footage back, I could see that Sara's hammock was actually pitched a bit low compared to mine. This probably amplified the effect, and yet, it still wasn't really much of an issue.
